All of the ultimate personas for party members are mythological tricksters though, and I only suggest coyote/anansi for that slot. The theme for initial personas definitely seem to be these romantic swashbuckling heroes though, which Quixote definitely fits.

He really was one of the shittiest ones. He harkens back to the awful P3 social links where the best route was always to feed into their delusions and only ever tell them what they wanted to hear. One of the scenes that really pissed me off was where he opened up donations, which is a stupid as fuck decision, especially because his first thought of what to do with the money is to eat out at the fancy buffet, but the only answer he wants to hear is "WOW, WHAT A GREAT IDEA! YOU'RE A GENIUS!" Then he immediately second guesses the idea and just about chastises you for thinking it was a good idea because you're just gonna be pissing it away on fancy meals. A. I wanted to tell you it was stupid from the get-go and B. NO YOU IDIOT WE COULD USE THAT MONEY ON BETTER GEAR AND ITEMS. The fancy meals were YOUR stupid idea. It's not even like you'd need the supplemental income but it could have had uses.

So many of his scenes are like this where the only answers that make him like you are agreeing with him and telling him what he wants to hear, preventing him from growing as a person and making his character arc flat, just like most of P3's social links.

And don't even start with the whole BUT THAT WAS THE POINT OF P3 THEY WANTED YOU TO BE A SOCIOPATH AND USE PEOPLE. No, they didn't. At no point in the game do they tell you to make superficial connections and use people as tools. They tell you to form bonds and use those friendships as power, implying they want you to actually care about them and get them to care about you.

Ok, that makes me feel better then knowing he was an auto-advance. I had my suspicions but the way the game handles him by giving him point boosts and hangout scenes made me wonder so I played it safe just to make sure I wasn't wasting time. I wonder him his confidant was originally meant to be points based but was reworked and the points and hangout options were vestigial leftovers... I guess I will just shit on him in my second playthrough then but it still bothers me that he was set up like that and he still consistently annoys me as a character.

Mishima is interesting in that regard, because the Persona team made his character a sort of reference to their general mechanic of social links, which is usually just designed around telling people what you think they want to hear, but by design, it doesn't help Mishima to tell him that, and his story ultimately advances by you telling him he's ridiculous. They still leave in the point up signs for when you tell him what he wants to hear, and that sort of acts an indicator for the player that it is indeed what he wants to hear, but it's not what he needs to grow.

They do this in other ways with some of the other characters too. Iwai is a notable example. Iwai pretty much always picks up on when you're bullshitting him, trying to tell him what he wants to hear, and he hates it. You be more real to why you're actually there (the guns and the social rank), and he'll respect you more.

Chihaya also has a little bit of this, but to a lesser extent, and likewise, Haru has a few instances where you need to think about what's best for her, instead of trying to placate her.

Yusuke is interesting as well. Many of his choices revolve entirely around you being honest with him, in that his esoteric shit is ultimately just that, and he needs something real, and less mechanical or academic.

Overall, I like the majority of the social links in this game over the previous ones. They had more depth and played with the concepts more, and mechanically they provided more diverse tools and upgrades for the player for the core combat gameplay, as well as the social aspect.

Though if I have one criticism, it's that I wish you could reverse social links as a consequence for bad choices, like the last game.
There's also not enough stat checks for conversation choices.

Yeah, that also bugged me. I enjoyed the social link characters more overall (for the very reasons you described in that most of them involve being up front or telling them what they NEED to hear) but the lack of any consequences and stat checks made things feel too forgiving and took some of the weight away from how you chose to spend your time. The only stat gates I remember at all were the ones to start certain links or advance them past a certain level and the two times in the game where you get chalk thrown at you in class.

I also miss the mechanic where some dialogue choices gave you points to certain stats or social links (during general scenes and not only during hangouts with that character) and the weird shit like the random dreams that gave you points for the character you dreamed about. I did see ONE dream near the end that got me points for Ryuji but it was the only one I ever saw so I don't know if that was a one-off or if they actually were in the game but just that rare of an occurrence.
