Just started playing the Splatoon series for the first time. Why the fuck are gyro controls for aiming not a thing for other (mainly console) games right now? It's nearly as good as KB + M. HOW IS THIS NOT GETTING PUSHED BY OTHER DEVS?
>>
No idea. The Killzone Vita game used them too and they worked great.

Tried the Destiny 2 beta and kept trying to aim with gyro. It's just so natural.
>>
because of the stigma against motion controls after the wii waggle era.
>>
>>386739724
Gyro controls are way superior to joysticks for shooters

Motion or stick, the fucking console pleb still needs to be standing next to the target to hit it.
>>
>>386739724
I agree. I can understand why multiplat console titles don't use it because the Xbone controller don't have gyro, but PS4 exclusives should definitely use it more.
Only PS4 games I know that use it are Gravity Rush HD and 2, and it's only for three cutscenes in HD.

I'd honestly probably play PC shooters with gyro aiming if it worked properly, since a controller is nicer than kb+m.

They're a thing for any PC game.
>>
>>386741509
How many PC game use Gyro for aiming?
>>
>>386739724
Steam controller got gyro option.
>>
>>386741587
You can setup the Steam Controller (and DS4 iirc) to control any game with gyro. Just map the gyro to the right stick or whatever controls the camera.
>>
>>386741509
I mean, if it's a shooter on a PC, I'm personally going to stick to mouse KB. Was more talking about console shooters if there was ever a time I did play one. Didn't know the steam controller had gyro which is awesome to know.
>>
>>386739724
Nintendo basically created everything for the gaming industry, from how games were made to the controller itself. It usually takes some time before other companies manage to catch up.
>>
It's unironically the biggest innovativion in decades for console gaming desu

The Xbox One controller doesn't have a gyro sensor and developers always target the weakest platform when making games.
>>
>>386741587
Steam lets you download or make custom control profiles for anything, so theoretically all of them but a couple of games come with default profiles with gyro controls. For example Dark Souls 3's default profile works amazingly and gyro camera controls are something I never thought I'd need but work amazingly for that game.
>>
>>386742035
define unironically
>>
>>386739724
Finally, somebody who gets it.
>3DS
>Vita
>Switch
>PS4
>Steam controller
All major platforms except Xbox have gyro sensors.
Every game that has aiming of some sort should have gyro controls as an option.

>>
>go to friend's house
>try to chill, kickback and play splatoon 2
>can't because you need to be sitting straight because of motion controls
>disable them
>it's alot more comfy afterwards

Also 70 dollar controllers vs 54 dollar ones
>>
>>386742406
A very sincere statement
>>
>>386740687
Steam controller has these options. The things an under-rated gem. Can even bind gyro to only trigger when you hold one of the extra triggers.

Try resident evil 4 with it to see the real power of it.
>>
>>386739724
Maybe I haven't got a hang of them yet, but I can't do shit with gyro controls.
>>
>>386742587
I've been planning on getting one but I've heard enough complaints to make me think there's gonna be a second model some time in the future.
I haven't touched it, but the handles seem like they point upwards and the surface being piano black puts me off, as well as other minor issues.
>>
>>386742570
I play in bed and have no issues.. Only time I do is handheld mode. Try using the joycons separate, shits so chill. One hand to aim, other to move as it chills to your side.
>>
>>386742035
This, seriously
>>
>>386740136
He's not wrong. It's surprisingly close to the accuracy of a mouse once you get used to it.
>>
>>386742701
Honestly people moan because they won't adapt. Shit is legitimately my favourite controller right now.

I hated it when I first got it and laughed about it with friends, then I used it more and more. Resident evil 4 really turned me around, now I use it whenever I can.
>>
>>386742634
It took me about a week of casually playing it to really get it down. You usually start off with using the sticks for large movements and using gyro to lock onto your target and eventually you'll get used to just using it for almost everything. Resetting the camera becomes natural
>>
>>386739724
I've only played the first Splatoon but I agree; the level of control is incredible and easy to use. That said, Splatoon is a fairly slower game. I can't imagine using gyro controls for Titanfall 2, for example. I'd sure love to give it a try though.
>>
>>386742704
Then it's 80 dollars instead of 54.

I will have to try this
>>
>>386742260
Then defend naughty dog games not having it; uncharted on the Vita had it
>>
>>386741587
With the steam controller or DS4, everything.
>>
>>386742570
The Xbone controller without gyro costs just as much as a Steam Controller or a DS4. The only ones overpricing their controllers at 70 bucks are Nintendo.
>>
>>386742701
>the handles seem like they point upwards
That's intentional. It angles your thumbs towards the trackpads. The controller itself has a learning period but it's pretty cool once you've adapted.
>>
>>386742830
The ps4 actually has a way to remap controls, but I've never used it so I don't know how indepth it is.
You MIGHT be able to set camera to the gyro with that, but like I said, I don't know.
>>
>>386739724
I thought gyro aim was a meme, but now I can't fucking stop, it's super comfy and I can actually hit things without controller auto aim. I also don't look like a retard positioning my crosshair by moving my character around or doing other gay ass console shit. KB + M is still better, but gamepad with gyro assist is leagues better than gamepad only.
I even use that shit on PC now
>>
>>386742701
>but the handles seem like they point upwards and the surface being piano black puts me off
Those two I really don't see as problems. The controlelr is Probably the most ergonomic I've ever held. The handles goung upwards makes it so you touch the pads with the point of your thumb instead of the "palm" making it more accurate. The glossy finish is only in areas you don't usually touch.
>>
>>386742793
>>386742931
Does any feature at all require big picture mode on Steam?
Can you use it comfortably on the desktop? On-screen keyboards and stuff like that.
>>
>>386743041
Playing with kb+m isnt comfy though. Working an office job saw to that. Gyro is.
>>
>>386743054
Yes. Can use it on desktop comfy as shit. I play ffxiv for hours everyday with it, and pretty much every game I need a pad for.
>>
>Can't use gyro controls for horizontal aiming
Why are Nintendo so fucking backwards when it comes to control settings? Why is this not a feature? There is no reason. People complained about this in the first game.
>>
Until CoD or any big name FPS multiplayer game introduces it to their games it will always be a meme and even then I think most FPS games on consoles use aim assist except for rainbow six siege I think
>>
>>386743104
Bad meme. Just get a better chair and wrist rest
>>
>>386743054
You can use it outside of big picture mode, just need to right click on a game on steam to access the controller customization associated with that particular game. In game it functions just like it did if you started the game under big picture mode.
>Can you use it comfortably on the desktop?
It has some basic controls for navigating the desktop, but I never used it much for that so can't comment on how well it actually works. Basic web browsing works well enough. You'll have to remember the shortcut for bringing up the on screen keyboard manually I believe.
>>
>>386743284
I want to recline with my feet up, I don't want a keyboard near me. Mouse is fine. I get home and want to potato and game.
>>
>>386743191
I don't know, you can do it with zelda and it feels really damn great
>>
How well does Splatoon 2 play with the joycons separated using motion controls?
>>
All the gyrofags need to die in hell.
>>
>>386740436
>>386740613
The real complaint is that the person in the video seems to be unable to jump and shoot with accuracy at the same time. In-air accuracy has no penalty so there's literally no reason not to jumpshot people. Unless, of course, the control scheme makes it virtually impossible to claw, which Splatoon 2 does if you use motion controls.
>>
>>386743490
Why? It's optional.
>>
Separate joycons are my favorite controller now, I'll have to look up how to use them on pc

>In-air accuracy has no penalty so there's literally no reason not to jumpshot people.
Jumping actually does make the ink spread wider than on ground, basically lowering the dps.

World at War. I don't even think it used gyro aiming, but rather just the IR sensor.
>>
>>386744036
You can set it to do that if you want but the implementation will change based on the game. If the game has a built in function you can use that, but if not you'll have to tweak the controls in the controller settings to get whatever you're after.

>>
>>386744489
I thought the pro controller had a gyro in it, hence the price. Is that not the case?

it does, but aiming with split joycons feels like you're aiming with a mouse pointer and you just cant get that feeling with a pro controller
>>
>>386744489
I don't understand the split joycon meme, its fine, but I think they pro gyro works just as well and is far more comfy to use.

>>386743642
He's mad because gyro beats auto aim which he's been used to on console shooters for 15 years or more. He's mad that he actually has to play videogames now
>>
>>386745175
For me, who haven't the most steady hands, that I can use both hand make the aiming more stable.
>>
>>386744489
can't you use the pro controller on other games?
>>
>>386743191
In splatoon? But you can.. Gyro does everything. I spin the pad in the air, do a 360 and roller splat people for lulz. You can't use the stick to look vertical with motion controls on, mainly because you'd be constantly recentring to match the changes your making. Is that what you mean?
>>
>>386744916
The gyro, or at least the one Splatoon uses, is only in the right Joy Con. Which means in the split format you only need to move your right hand to aim. I played with the grip that comes with the console for a bit, but the split formation really does feel better. You don't have to do deal with rotating both your wrists together, for one. Turning left and right is more of a chore with a grip/procontroller.
>>
>>386744489
I fucking dodged that bullet after paying $50 for a WiiU Pro Controller and never using it, ever
>>

Gyro is good for splatoon because the aiming is imprecise. Destiny 2 has sniping, which would be absurdly difficult on gyro because, even with a very still hand, it tends to be wobbly. You can't make those tiny long ranged head shots with gyro.

If you only used shotgun it would work though.
>>
>>386739724
I'm so glad you niggers who didn't buy the fucking Wii U are understanding gyro aiming should be the future of console shooters. I'm adamant about never playing FPS games on console because aiming is basically fucking impossible without liberal amounts of autoaim, but I would go out of my way to buy every shooter on PS4 if they'd implement gyro aiming. I fucking hate CoD, but the moment they make a PS4 version with gyro aiming, they'll earn my $60

Have you never used the gyro typing on PS4? I feel aiming at certain letters on the keyboard requires more precision than Splatoon and it feels pretty good to so freely move that reticle around with controller motions
>>
>>386749742

It has aim assist because it uses joystick controls, not the other way around.

>>386749831

Yes but you can hit any part of the body and the range is so low that they are still fairly large on your screen. It's still far less precise than a long range headshot.

>can't use gyro for horizontal

but that's wrong you faggot. gyro adjusts vertical and horizontal aim. I think you might be confusing gyro with Joystick and horizontal with Veritcal. so your sentence might be right if you had said

>can't use joystick for vertical aiming (with gyro active)

and i'd agree it's stupid because as someone already said, you can in zelda and it works great.
>>
>>386743482
Incredible you only use the right joycon for gyro in that situation and it works fantastically
>>
>>386739724
Developers don't like to add any new features as it increases development time and cost. Considering gyro is an additonal and optional feature, making it into an industry standard means they now have to include it in all of their games. They can't make quick cash grab rehashes anymore if they do that.
>>
>>386750046
The controls in Zelda suck because you can't use the stick and motion in conjunction. Pressing the stick in any direction immediately turns off the gyroscope.
>>
>>386749635
>Destiny 2 has sniping, which would be absurdly difficult on gyro because, even with a very still hand, it tends to be wobbly.
That's retarded. You're retarded anon.
>>
>>386750046
They probably disable vertical aiming since Splatoon has no pause feature and you would constantly need to reset the camera if you abuse both gyro and normal control for aiming. It also probably make motion sickness feel worse.
>>
>>386749603
>sonygros don't know hot to play without autoaim.

Splatoon is a game where you actually have to aim and does not play by itself.
>>
>>386749635
this is some next level delusion, it's basically the opposite of the truth. in a game where everyone is using gyro the only weapon you might be able to keep up with on sticks is the shotgun. gyro sniping is so much better than dual stick sniping its not even funny.
>>
>>386750414
I think it's more that Splatoon plays best by using the stick for turning and the Gyro for aiming. Turning vertical stick control off means you can easily push the stick left or right without being offset any on the vertical.
>>
Because of retards like >>386749603
>>
>>386740187
It's still really far behind, but it's better than just fuckin sticks for small movements and accuracy like tracking.
>>
>>386749831
Splatoon Chargers are not hitscan
>>
>>386750841
well yeah, that still puts it as 2nd best behind KB+M, though. If it wasn't for the wii wagglan dark ages, motion controls could've come a long way by now; instead, they stagnated for years and have only recently started being accepted as a superior alternative to sticks.
>>
>>386751045
I'm pretty sure they are. Fully charged it instantly hits the target then ink falls from the trajectory
>>
>>386751221
Theyre almost hitscan because you only have to aim slightly ahead of a target not too drastic
>>
>>386751059
Wii gave us Metroid Prime 3/Trilogy, the CoD ports, and Red Steel 2. It single-handedly revived motion control as a thing worth developing. And everyone else did bupkis with it. It's literally just been Nintendo trying to do anything with it, their own waggle shit aside. Even before the Wii, it was Nintendo trying to make stuff work with it. They may have fucked it in several instances, but they were also the only ones even trying.
>>
>>386742823
>Splatoon
>Slow
In what universe? If anything, it has defensive options, which is extremely rare in shooters.
>>
>>386751410
true, but I wasn't knocking nintendo or the wii as a whole, just that the wagglan games are the root to the stigma against motion controls today.
>>
>>386750424
But... But it's for babies....
>>
>>386751591
Fair enough. It's a decent title of the period of development overall, it is true, given the argument I just made.
>>
How can people play this baby game?
Why not play actual shooters like CS or Overwatch?
>>
>>386740136

It's definitly the next best thing. All the range of movement of a stick combined with the precision of using both hands vs 1 for fine aiming, and being stuck with the cardinal directions for movement.
>>
>>386740613
I think thats more of splatoon's fault, the splattershot doesn't have too much range.

He should have used a Jet Squelcher to illustrate the aim more and from further.
>>
>>386739724
Man I was just saying this the other day. I was playing Super Mario sunshine and that game would definitely benefit from switch controls.
