Real talk, Star Trek Online. I could give you a massive essay about all the things I like in this game from a gameplay and story perspective, but I'll shorten it down for ya.

Space combat is a blast, ground combat gets a lot better since they've been adding ground sets with interesting mechanics. The game is a labour of love from the developers, it bleeds through in every corner of the game. They've developed a significant amount of new story arcs, neatly tied into or tied off story arcs from the show and worked in a lot of really, really great writing in the process. (Play the Klingon compaign, it's my favorite.)

But the game isn't perfect. It can be buggy, PuGs can be prohibitively stupid and there's the odd bit of just really shit, unedited piece of writing in the low-level content.

Worst you could do is not give it a shot. Don't fucking bother playing on console.

>>
My favorite thing about Star Trek these days is watching retards on 4chan try to spin that the show is "totally redpilled" and that the new series is going to be "ruined by liberals" just because to current online culture war pissing match has rotted their brains to the point where they cannot accept they enjoy something progressive.
>>
>>386738425
You fool, it's meant to be "Tea: Earl Gray"

Now you'll end up with some twisted abomination in the form of Earl Gray made entirely out of tea
>>

>>
>>386738620
My favorite thing about 4chan is when people start a liberal vs conservative argument in a thread that has nothing to do about the subject.

Why don't you remove yourself from life you fucking faggot, just neck yourself. I'm fucking tired of this bullshit
>>
>>386738783
Triggered faggot who doesn't want to admit he enjoys a progressive show in front of the cool 4chan boys detected
>>
>>386738620
My favourite thing about Star Trek is that in TOS there is a suspicious amount of portrays of women causing all the problems or behaving irrationally then the men swoop in to save the day, every fucking time.

Then the suspicious portrayal of Ferengi in DS9.
>>
>>386738620
Same. The threads on /tv/ are pure fucking gold. I've never seen more mental gymnastics. The new show will be impossible to discuss, so I'm just going to watch it and not waste time seeing what anyone online is saying about it.

Don't tell /pol/ but I'm secretly hoping they don't shy away from keeping it progressive because that's a huge part of Star Trek and I don't want them to dumb it down like the movies just to maintain the broadest possible audience. Star Trek should trigger conservatives or else it's just dumb action shit.
>>
>>386738909
>suspicious portrayal of Ferengi
What was suspicious about it? The Federation is an enlightened post-scarcity utopia and the Ferengi are asshole, materialistic capitalists. I don't think you could get any less suspicious about the point being made if you tried.
>>
A Star Trek game where you travel space as a Ferengi making shady deals and backstabbing people to both build the biggest fortune and try and get your body to sell for as much as possible when you inevitably get killed by someone you piss off
>>
>>386738909
>dude the ferengi are totally jews lmao this show is so redpilled!!!
Actually the ferengi are a means of showing how bad capitalism (and sexism) is and are mostly used to show how the federations socialism is superior... but yeah bro it's totally redpilled bro they're totally telling the audience the jews are evil!!!!!!!

>>
>>386742430
It's just going to be like DS9 where nobody can actually talk reasonably about how good or bad it is until 10 years after it's finished. DS9 had people crying about "SJW shit" back then the whole way through its production. Imagine what /tv/ would think of DS9 if it was airing now. They'd lose their fucking minds. But now it's old so people are fine with saying they like it. And that it was "diversity done right" and so on. But the new show is diversity done wrong because ??????

TOS is a super mixed bag. The first season is straight up one of the best seasons of any scifi show ever put on television. Eps like Space Seed, Devil in the Dark, City on the Edge of Forever, Balance of Terror, Naked Time, Arena, Squire of Gothos are the reason why the show became a phenomenon. Then mixed in you have utter garbage like The Alternative Factor. Season 2 still has some great episodes like Amok Time, Doomsday Machine, Mirror Mirror, and Trouble with Tribbles, but there's a lot more that are boring, cheap, or just bad. And season 3 is a trainwreck with zero budget and hardly a good episode in the whole lot. On the whole though, even when TOS is being campy and dumb, it's better than the average episode in the spinoffs. Much as I love them, they are mostly pretty dull with a few standout episodes (or in the case of DS9 a few standout arcs as well). If the franchise had begun with a show as bad as Voyager or Enterprise, nobody would ever have decided to make a sequel.

I love how back in the day, PuGs were so bad and dungeons were vaugely hard that it was easier to use complex glitches to beat bosses than it was to actually do them properly.

I wish STO didn't lock cool looking ships behind loot crates and huge amounts of microtransactions.

Also I bought an oculus on the recent sale and I'm waiting on it to arrive to play Bridge Crew, anyone here plays that?
>>
>>386750459
IIRC, the loot crate thing was a workaround, they wanted to let players have ships that wouldn't normally be federation/KDF and CBS was like "no this is a srs bznz star trek game, no tier 5 constitutions, no cardassian ships!" but cryptic were like "what about if they're SUPER rare" and they agreed.

CBS wanted the game to be 100% canon, and Cryptic had to fight them to get "soft canon" status, i.e. the events are canon but not how they go down.
>>
>>386749952
I only watched the bluray-enhanced versions of ToS, but I liked the 'toy' like simplicity to the CGI renditions of the original Enterprise. Unlike that Transformers-esque over-detailed crud shown in that image above for Discovery's ship.

On an unrelated note, I thought Star Trek: Enterprise was rather alright if you could overlook the crude CGI aliens and Archer's constant whining about Vulcan's in season 1.
>>
>>386750787
But that doesn't even matter now since the series has been rebooted.
I pre-ordered STO and to this day I'm barely level 50, between a dozen attempts to play it again.
It's so fucking confusing too, with its hundred currencies and dozen minigames.
>>
>>386750924

I'm glad they've lighten the leash as of late, as the new stuff's been pretty great story wise. I'm just hating how much of an investment the game becomes after a while.
>40 days to max out a rep if you happen to have all the needed stuff to turn in for each day.
>Dil spending is far too high for how little you can convert per day. Unless you're sitting on a pre-converted dil goldmine, you can expect a wall of a few MONTHS just turning in dil daily till you can buy your sets, not even talking about CRAFTING said sets up to 14 Ultra Rare here ether, or even using dil to get Zen
>On that note, Zen prices in general. T6's being the most insulting thing to date. Doesn't help that T6's have ship traits that you'll want to unlock ether.
>Leech is still the most OP item in the entire game and they will never add a non-zen alternative towards it in any fashion, so get ready to spend a few million credits on one as unless you're an engie you'll want the power gains
>>
>>386751420

It starts to stack on each 'full' upgrade you do towards it after you hit 14. It's retarded though as you almost always need to push it towards 100% for it to go up, and that can take a few 10-20 upgrades, and you do this for each rarity upgrade.
It's such a massive resource drain, including for ship weapons, but the results are obvious as fuck.
But you have to LOVE this game and have been playing for a while to do it. Just starting out, or if you started in the last year? You might as well ignore it all together as you're better off getting other things done, like getting zen for ship traits, or saving dil for the rare DOFF's from fleet stores.

I think it's adequate. What made the NX-01 look more primitive compared to TOS was that it was very industrial looking and segmented with a conventional design for the nacelles. TOS Enterprise was clean, the construction was mold-like and looked almost alien in comparison with the nacelles and secondary body attached by spindly parts.

The Discovery looks like a good in-between. It's got the almost alien mold look of TOS, but has industrial elements like a large, bulky arm to hold the saucer in place and wide wings for the nacelles. The Shenzhou, which is not as advanced as Discovery, looks much more like an NX era ship.

>Do all that you need to do to max out every rep.
>Farm out Terrain Task Force the most as it's ship set is OP as fuck and everyone uses it, New Romulus after that
>Get a TON of ships for the Admiralty system. You just have to have them on hand once to get their cards, then can ether shelf or sell them afterwords. The T4/T5 Mirror Universe ships are pretty great for this as they always go for dirt cheap.
>Get purple DOFF's. Just get them. Look up guides fro a few of the DOFF quest chains and do them. Do stuff for fleet for fleet credits and buy them. Just get them all. You will feel better about everything once you do.
>Don't feel like you should be doing a ton on any one day. This entire game goes by days, and honestly you can expect some days just being to log in, click a few HUD buttons to refine dil, and to set up stuff for reps and other things, and then log the fuck back off. You need to play this every day, but you don't need to do a lot in turn.

The Warp scale was changed for TNG, numpty. Warp 10 by the revised scale is infinite velocity.

And no, the final TNG episode where they go Warp 13 doesn't count either because that's also a warp scale alteration. You can't set up a maximum speed of infinity and then move faster than that.

Because I was a cheap fucker and didn't buy the fucking $100 something bundle, instead opting in for the $10 for a T6 ship and BOFF. It's a nice ship though even without the skin, and it's a solid boat I was using to make pugs easy as sin to clear at the time. Low effort 30k DPS is kinda nice.

>>386754541
Just keep that stuff in mind. There's a ton in the game sure, but only a few things really matter at the end of the day, and you just have to focus on those things part by part. Right now you might struggle to break 5K DPS when you're boating around. Get the Terrain set and you'll see your damage nearly triple in turn. Get the other stuff and you'll see other QoL stuff come your way, where soon you can just dick around and do whatever the fuck you want because difficulty in this game is mostly just on how fast you can kill shit.

Not arguing that, but in Starfleet someone in engineering would get more respect from command staff than an equal in science.

Anyway, it's not a bad deal even in that position. Spaceships aren't cheap even in the ST universe, so you get to travel as you earn credits to enjoy life on alien planets when you have leave or take a vacation. No it wasn't... The enterprise had families onboard for whatever dumb reason, but they weren't intended to spend their entire lives there. The enterprise regularly took shore leave and stuff too, and you can take leave pretty much whenever you want unless there's some big mission that needs you.

While the RPG begs to differ, because a society without money is ridiculous even with post-scarcity and replicators, TNG firmly established that the Federation has moved beyond money and everyone in Starfleet is there because they want to be. There's no financial motivation to their work at all.

Monetary compensation motivates people to do shitty jobs today because they need money in order to do things like live under a roof and eat every day. In the wonder future of TNG, these things aren't an issue on planets like Earth, so why would people willingly choose to do boring, crappy jobs?

Not true. Various references in the series has established that there is some form of economy and ability to influence the standard of living.

Remember, people are provided all of the basics at a high level of quality. Food, shelter, education, training, etc. But there are people who own property, like the Picard's vineyard or Sisko's restaurant, or objects like a spaceship. Some even invest in alien economies with businesses etc.

Not too sure I would come back towards it at this point. I've got both a TOS and Time Alt that I need to keep tabs on, more less for the TOS to finish the last of their stupid requirements.

I also missed the Year 6 ship, and that alone killed my last ounce of drive, even if it wasn't the UFO, it's still a ship I could have had for all my alts that's now missed out on. I had my time with it, and while it was fun, I doubt I'll go back.

you can easily get your own ship, you just have to convince starfleet / the federation that you do need it to do your work.

it'd be like a mechanic who thinks he's hot shit, going to honda and getting them to give him an f3 car, so he can fuck with the engines to prove his ideas out. eventualy honda get a better engine out of the deal ,and fucko the grease monkey gets to do what he loves stuffing his hands into some hot girls mechanicals.

Technically they can. You have to program the replicator with the specifics of the dish but you could replicate anything you wanted, so long as you know exactly what it is you want.

Replicators keep getting better. A lot of people in TNG/DS9 keep commenting that the new replicators are nearly as good as the real thing.

Some people are pleased about this, some are like "It's not REAL man!"

Wouldn't replicated food get insanely boring after a while? Since it's uniformly created, there would be no variation unless you manually input it. Real food would have variations based on cooking conditions/technique. I imagine replicator food would be seen as basic, whereas food by a quality chef would be a commodity.

>>
>>386760023
I'd say it's more like an average cafeteria meal. It's mass produced and it's passable unless you manually edit how the replicator does it, which is what a lot of people do.

But yeah everyone likes getting cooked food because it's just better. And they complain mostly because well, it's relative, for them the fact the food has been boring for months is enough to bitch about.
>>
>>386759804
If you muck around with the "recipe" you can have the replicator produce the food you like, exactly the way you like it, every single time. Granted, most people probably don't know how to do that, or just don't care enough to, but for the obsessive compulsives of the future it's probably a godsend

Addition of a new rep grind (as if we didn't have enough of those already) some new story missions, including the latest one where we break a klingon out of Son'a jail.
Also im not sure how long ago they added it, but they added a TOS character as a playable character for feddies, also they added a new admiralty grind, this one is for ferengi.
Also quite a few ships got added and connie and miranda got a graphical facelift.
>>

Klingon views of honor essentially boil down to: Achieve victory by any means necessary, and make up a cool story about it later if it was attained through unsavory means.

If I blow up a hospital ship, and claim it was a battlecruiser, then that's how it is. If someone challenges my version of events, we fight because he just called me a liar. If he dies, guess I wasn't lying after all.

Victory is more important than achieving victory through honor, but the appearance of honor is also important.

Worf is weird and maybe even insane by Klingon standards in that he cares about HOW he achieves victory. His own personal conduct is more important to him than how he appears to others.

Unsurprisingly, he gets this from being raised by humans, being a Klingaboo, and having accidentally killed a human classmate while still a child.

The entire endgame progression turned into reputation grinds. The old STF system awarded sets of ship and character gear, each reputation offers similar rewards, but you need to pay tons of reward tokens/energy credits/dilithium/experience for them. Some reputation gear sets are better than others due to power creep.
There was a complete overhaul of the Kit mechanics as well, each kit ability is its own slottable item and you can mix and match up to 5 skills and level them up.
Crafting has been made much simpler but more grindy and expensive.
Upgrading items is done through its own interface and costs specific upgrade items and dilithium to perform.
And you can pay actual money to do all of this easier.

the feds and kdf and rommies have it as a response to the danger posed by omega particles.

yes they're stupidly high enrgy far more than a simple matter anti matter reaction, but they're really unstable and when they break down ( read BLOWUP) not only do they pack a punch of a few gorrillion wc's , they also leave a stain or residue on space time that prevents warp drive from forming a field,no more ftl in that SECTOR
>>
>>386767285

It's not 100% terrible. They also let you grind for end game ships three times a year during events, which is a decent way to get your foot in the T6 door.

You can also grind for dilithium to turn into zen to purchase C-Store ships. It's time consuming and the refining process bottlenecks you at 8k per day.

Don't trash your old ships until you get to level 55 and unlock the Admiralty system. You get cards for them, which can be sent on missions. The Klingon and Ferengi campaigns have a repeated 10 mission chain that gives you 30k unrefined dilithium every time you complete it.

Alts make this process quicker, because you can have alts doing admiralty and refining their 8k when available.

Man I really wish there was a great star trek game and/or a new TV show that looked good. Abrams Trek is so soulless and I dont think discovery is going to be good but I will wait and see. It sucks I could never get into STO because I hate grinding in games. All I ever wanted was a star trek game like mass effect or Star Trek legacy with more depth.

i did too.

my bunch of retarded pugs ran around leeta not even baiting her pushing the consoles as soon as they lit up again and again.

i had to run up in her face and batleth the cunt to get her to stand on whatever pad some idiot decided to trigger for no freaking reason. i LOVE standing in fire because pugs refuse to do anything even remotely helpful.

What about their version of the miranda? Is rom-randa worth a shit? It's the least attractive of the factions versions for sure.

yes, it's from the voyager themed rep.

the delta set is ok, not the best, i jsut love it because it gives my engineer TWO orbital bombardments.

one from their class ( upgraded with orbital chasing beam trait) and the alternate secondary fire on the rifle.

with three pieces the 'expose' secondary turns into an 'exploit' secondary on any target that IS exposed already.
the kdf dis version looks cooler

I always figured money or credits or whatever worked in the sense that you had the basics provided for you, but you still had to put up your own cash for the extra luxuries. Like if you wanted that bitchin' personal holodeck entertainment system, you still had to work for it.

I think that's how it would have to work, basically. There are just some commodities their technology can't make free. It's pretty much capitalism, but with a socialist government with technology that makes the capitalism aspect a very minor part of everyday life.

The people writing the story and characters for STO can be outdone by 14 year old fanfic writers.

I honestly think that might happen too. CBS only has Big Bang Theory and NCIS left in terms of programming. Both will be cancelled within the next 5 years. They have nothing else in the tank when it comes to original programming.

CBS will keep STD going as long as they need to, in order to keep their streaming service alive. CBS All Access is the new UPN

There's a VR Star Trek also that let's you play JJ Trek and TOS , unfortunately they stick you in a chair and you can't move freely about the ship , but you can give commands to the AI using your voice , and you can play with real people also. I prefer to use the AI.
