So Ace Combat: Assault Horizon seems to have been an attempt

So Ace Combat: Assault Horizon seems to have been an attempt at making a cinematic aerial combat game.

I'm very impressed by the cutscenes that all run in engine and bleed into and out of gameplay mostly seamlessly despite the breakneck speed of the jets. Graphically it's actually quite impressive and seems to have been using depth of field effects well ahead of the curve. Environments are loaded with objects down to street lamps and telephone booths. Character models are quite detailed even if the skin shading isn't modern by today's standards, and the pilots animating in their cockpits is a neat touch. In fact this game is chalk full of neat touches.
I can see what they were trying to do with the dogfight system. Flight sims all play the same at the core, and they were looking for a way to spice it up. They succeeded in making each kill a spectacle but they undermine it by using the kill cam too often and by scripting too many planes to ONLY DIE AT CERTAIN JUNCTURES regardless of how many missiles you plug up their asses. The steel carnage is fucking art in motion though. I would love to see an second attempt at a game like this but utilizing something like BeamNG's destruction system.
The game could do entirely without the door gunner sections and the helicopter combat isn't particularly great until Moscow when they finally force you to weave through the buildings for cover from AA radar. How they managed to build a worse AC-130 mission than Modern Warfare had is beyond me. You'd think a game of this genre would have the best one ever.
Music was forgettable and poorly implemented save for that very first song. You know the one.
The story was fucking retarded and not even remotely self-aware of how poorly executed it was.

I think if they took out some of the forced sections for the dogfight mode you mentioned and had it be an optional thing you could do alongside the normal dogfighting we're all used to the game would have been a lot more palatable and maybe some of its transgressions would have been overlooked. It did really feel like it was something that should have been kept more as a helpful section of gameplay than feeling like you needed to use it in order to do well on anything that isnt easy difficulty.

The bombing routes or ground attack routes were a kind of nice use for it and would have been better it it were just slightly less obviously on the rails and didn't inflate your firepower so much that it felt like the only viable way to complete those sections. But I understand that it would have been really hard to try and keep everything balanced together designing the game to accommodate both the vanilla playstyle and the new dogfight mechanic they were trying out for the first time simultaneously.
If more work had been put in to fleshing out some of the different aircraft roles like the helicopter sections which were a nice way to spice things up and had a lot of potential I think AH would have gotten some of the appreciation it deserved.

DFM is basically an on rails section where the dude you're chasing is laying down the track. They tried to gamify chases to make them more exciting but by distilling it that much, they made it repetitive. Shame the MP is dead. I'd have loved to see how such a system translated into actual humans being chased.

I remember DFM being used in one of the early levels to pull you through the falling refinery smokestacks and near the end weaving through buildings and stuff like that and thinking it was a sorta neat way to make the game a little more cinematic and action packed but I was also thinking about how I would've felt that rush infinitely more if I was in full control and the level was set up in a way where I needed to take that daring path weaving through things like the megalith.
I never saw multiplayer but I'd imagine DFM would be the kind of mechanic that would either be the only thing you used or the thing you never used. Seems like it would boil down to people picking high mobility planes and just going through constant reversals until someone was shot down or a third person intervened.

Well I think the point of the reversal is you have to risk slowing down and presenting your ass for the enemy. But how much damage they can do to you in that time window I guess I'll never know. It would be humorous to watch two guys go at it for 20 fucking minutes like that though. Like a unicorn turned inside out.

I lived through both console AH and PC and it really was very lag sensitive. Also it was either DFM bonanza with lag or someone firing a trinity on the ground and blowing up air targets that got goaded into low altitude chases
The hatemail was to die for when I hit a bogey on my tail doing the latter.

But despite that AH was borderline decent but I rather not live through it again. AC7 dont let us down.

Speaking of ace combat, I wonder what will happen to infinity. Would be a shame to lose my level 20 Buddy morgan that I grinded while being pure F2P

Bad form mate. But yes. It was usable on MP but only lucky nuggets or true aces get it

Also to expand on the idea, people LOVED to DFM around in mp so much that most forget you can blow up others without using it. DFMing was also dangerous as slowing down and angling badly can result in a shot down.

Used to play and had a match that me and a guy looped for like 10? Times before a bystander couldn't stand it anymore and shot me down.

Firing trinity in MP at air is useless and mostly used at low altitude BRAPS.

Fuck I remember a time me and my bro played AC0. Used FAEB on him thinking I was memeing around haha fuck those were awesome times. Emulatable in ACI too though

Probably a concession made for the ridiculously close range aspect of being chased by enemy fighters.
That and parts like THIS where you can't even gain altitude for fear of getting radar locked.

I hope 7 does more cool stuff with the types of aircraft we get to use in missions. Getting pulled out of the baseline fighter/multirole jets and into stuff like the A-10 or the big bomber missions was a nice change of pace to liven things up and see them experiment with things. Since theres so much going on already with the game allegedly with the cloud cover and weather affects changing how you're forced to play maybe we'll see cool shit like multiplayer game modes where you've got some people that get into attack craft to hit objectives on the ground that need to be watched after by your teammates or some of that low altitude helicopter combat but more fleshed out and in-depth than "slam button combo to dodge missile every 5 seconds". On the other hand it might also feel like its taking away from the feel that ace combat has made for itself with good dogfighting and a fitting atmosphere to do it in.
I just want more air combat games.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you but I'm pretty impressed by this given the year of release and genre of game. Some things stick out worse than others at times though.

Ace Combat games are way too fucking easy. It's dumb that you can outrun missiles. AC4 is my favorite one but that one is probably the easiest, you practically have to let things hit you to ever take damage. I have not been following the progress of the new one that's gonna be released but they should make it the same as Hard mode on AC: Infinity where missiles are fast, do tons of damage and have very good tracking, if you don't take things seriously you get shot down in no time on that game.

Also Assault Horizon besides being shit still managed to have a great soundtrack, so I'm glad it exists. AC was in a rut, the formula hadn't changed since Air Combat and they were just recycling the same missions from before, they needed a change but unfortunately they made all the wrong choices. Ace Combat 3 was when the series peaked as far as mission variety and design goes.
