Japan LOVES wizardry, and the JRPGs pretty much spawned from wizardry players.

ultima was the one and basically only inspiration for dragon quest

but there isn't a strict correlation, because DQ has a narrative pushing you along a path, with properly leveled monsters

whereas most ultima games (especially 1-4) just push you out the door and you have to visit everywhere to figure out what to do
