Not to mention the out-of-ship gameplay is a copy-paste of AC3 except with shittier animations and a waste-of-time story.
Is the protag even an assassin? I don't think he is, sure as shit doesn't act like it- doesn't even know what they are in fact. Why is this an assassin's creed game?
And the fucking real-world 'plot' direction they took it in, (forget the first-person, no-parkour 'gameplay'), making it this meta garbage where ubisoft itself is controlled by templars. Even though they tried to handhold the players through it, with their corporate emails and narratives of how they'd make the templar-slanted animus good for popular consumption (INCLUDING THE SAME SETTING WE'RE FUCKING PLAYING YOU DENSE MOTHERFUCKERS), most of the playerbase failed to get it.

Everything about this game is awkward, bloated, casualized failure.
And the cherry on-top is the wide critical acclaim it recieved.

Can't have points of interest without stretches of bleakness.

I'd have been far more content with 1/10th the ships, 2x as deadly, and with 2-3x the distance between islands so you can really stretch your legs in the fights, the waves can actually get big, and you get just the briefest taste of actually sailing a wide boring ocean where shanties pass the time.
That is, for more than the base game's 5 whole seconds before you come around the island bend and spot another 7 ships of various nationalities casually cruising around in a little fucking pond waiting for the player to engage them.

The way they are portrayed as cartoonishly bad in the other games works because they are just that. Cartoon villains or overly edgy. When you put things into perspective the assassins are basically just as bad and on top of that self proclaimed good guys. Its a real shame they will never make another templar game though.

Man, to me, AC4's story was so perfect
