So? Him being an ex soldier didn't help him in the dark room. Jefferson was hidden, he had a gun away and he knew how to use it, he was hit twice which made his gun fall from his hand. That's why he was destroyed in the fight and needed help from Max to know what actions is jeff going to do.

The fact that he admitted how much of a dick he was during the earlier chapter and against teenagers make him a redeemable person.
