I was fucking trash at languages in school myself, I had three years of German and I couldn't put together a basic sentence if you put a gun to my head, and even I can understand moonspeak pretty well now. That's because I put in the time and work, I researched and figured out methods that worked for me and kept at it for a long time without giving up. I'm still not great at producing grammatically correct 日本語 and there are people who can run circles around me when it comes to proficiency in the language, but by now I can read 75% of the sentences I see fine and am still improving because I'm still keeping at it.

In any case I don't really care if I can convince you or not, it's just a shame to see someone doing such a disservice to themselves by making up excuses even though they could do so much better.

Lazy maybe but so are you judging by your self described German fluidity, but they probably have the same amount of motivation you do, unless you've moved or plan to move to Japan.
Most anons are not so different from yourself in situation, but they have a hard time grasping all the different letters and symbols, or learning a different system of grammatical rules that is different from the one they've used their entire lives. They can't do it while you can, because you have natural talent for these things.

The difficulties of learning a completely new language and learning one that is similar to one you already know are different. Some people have it easier learning new things and a harder time relating things to what you've already learned. If his German lessons was anyting like mine then his teacher would try to make him learn German by relating words and rules to his native language, since they are often quite similar. The same cannot be done with Japanese as it's rules can only partially be compared to those we have in the west, and it's often taught "standalone" as in; it doesn't relate that much - if at all - to your native language, but is instead taught from the bottom up. At least my Japanese lessons were like that.
