Games that should be talked about more.
baiten kaitos is pretty old at this point, wasnt it a release title for the gamecube?
>set shotgun to max ammo and blow people's heads off
>going full retard with the machine gun
>use the chemical gun to go fast and blow people up with sticky bombs
>>386702715
Too bad the prequel was so shit and ruined the combat.
>>386702715
is this that shitty game with cards?
>>386703037
yup
>>386702715
I never see anybody talk about Origins. To be honest I'm surprised Nintendo considered the first game successful enough to make another. While we're at it, where's the third game?
>>386702998
I'm glad someone else feels this way, I never understand the praise I see for Origins. And I loved the first one too.
>>386703191
Maybe if we get enough Xenoblades 2 they migth make a Batten Kaitos X

i just finished a play through 100% run that took me about 430 hours of gameplay and it was great
How does the card combat work?

what did he mean by this?
I think this was my first gamecube game that came on more than one disc. actually i cant think of any other titles that did

Certain cards transom into other cards after a certain amount of time. Fruit becomes ripe fruit, which becomes rotten fruit. Or Milk becomes yogurt I think. Just examples.
In order to get 100%, you need to get a Splendid Hair card.
To get that card, you need to get the Shampoo card, which transforms into the Splendid Hair card.
It takes two weeks for the Shampoo to transform into Splendid Hair. And that's "system on and playing" time, not "two weeks of real-time based on your system's clock" after you got it."

It has been years since I played, but from what I remember.
>Each card represents a weapon, spell, armor, or item
>They have up to 4 numbers, one in each corner
>You play multiple cards on your turn, using the C-stick to select which of it's corner numbers you want to play it on
>You also play cards when being attacked to defend
>Making things like pairs and straights with the numbers multiplies the attack/defense/healing/etc power of the cards you used
>Certain combinations of cards being played together will create new cards (Fire+Food card will create cooked version of food for example)
>Cards age as game progresses, so fruit will rot, a piece of bamboo grows into a bamboo spear, etc
>Also there was some sort of photography system I think where you can take pictures in battle and doing things like playing a light spell card on the same turn will improve the picture quality
heh...nothing personnel...kid
>>386702715
Baten Kaitos was so fucking good I didn't even mind the abysmal voice acting.
Orb of Magical Offense
>>386704692
>>386703769
each card has stats, e.g +10 atk etc
cards also have a random number assigned to them
some later game cards have multiple numbers
the key is to chain the numbers in either ascending or descending order, e.g 1234 or 9876
the higher the number chain the bigger the bonus damage, you can make it about halfway through the game without even using the combo system but once you hit the 3v3 fight at the start of the second disk you will get stomped until you learn how to combo
>>386702715
I love this game so fucking much. I haven't been able to play a game to completion as many times as I've played this one, and the plot isn't even good.
It's been 10+ years and I still haven't found another game that I enjoy this much, I hated Lost Kingdoms.
The healing items expiring and going bad, or items turning into different items over time.
I'll never find another game like it. Hold me, /v/.

It wouldn't have been so bad if it didn't sound like they recorded it all through a fucking metal tube.
Origins at least nailed the voice acting and quality.

Origins had a better combat system and a better plot. I love it.
>>386703191
Baten Kaitos is clearly a passion project, not a moneymaker.
>>386705336
To what? Got a friend going through it right now.
>>386703985
There were a few, the Resident Evil games, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Tales of Symphonia, there are more I just don't remember.
Anybody who's played Origins know what to do with that stuffed Greythorne magnus you can make? You get it from doing the heartlink sidequests then stuff it with cottonflowers, but then it just deflates if you leave it like that.
Feels like there's a million bullshit cards you can make and even the nips don't have enough wikis or autism to cover them all.
>>386704886
>>386705208
The music for their fight was awesome, though.
I feel like BK is what happens when Monolith Soft makes a shit game, but since it's monolith soft it still comes out as being good
>>386705007
>>386704793
Don't forget the SP Combos. The game has a bunch of hidden cards with amplified effects that can be unlocked by using the correct combination in combat. You're better off downloading a list that has each combo because there's a lot of them.
>this was the game that introduced me to the wonderful world of library videogame catalogs
>>386705430
I think setting the audio to surround helped it, even if you don't have a surround system.
>main character betrays you the playerin BK
>you the player are the ancient evilin Origins
Can we talk about the crazy fucking tweeests these games had?
>>386705717
neat, thanks mate.
>>386704886
I wish I could say these three gave me a problem at the mountain cottage or whatever, but I have to say that it felt like a standard affair. Like yeah it's tough, but I never felt like they had me cornered against the wall at any moment. What I hate is that I have to do it all over again because apparently Savyna can't get her best equip Magnus unless you give some fucker something in some kingdom before you do that fight.
>>386704236
No you're absolutely right. Origins is just superior. Both are great though, and different. But Origins has one of the best battle sytem ever, so addictive, combo-friendly and fast paced.
The trio character is amazing, good plot twists, great scenery and epic touching music.
>>386705369
Wtf I knew Wojak was familiar somehow.
>>386706150
>when you're in the last part of the game and you've said all the right stuff and Sagi and you are bffs so the heart of the cards loves you and the combo chains just keep coming and coming
>>386706150
>Origins is just superior
I disagree. Its different, but not superior in any way.
I much prefer the richer, slower paced battle system of the first game. The cities and environments were also much more fun to visit, fuck that detective part in Origins.
>>386706647
I don't wanna sound like I'm hating on it because I liked both a lot, but Origins just plain had a lot more character to the world. The descriptions on everything were actually interesting and every single generic NPC had some sort of amusing or sad or otherwise worthwhile flavor text, while BK was a lot more bland in comparison. I mean, every single fucking BED in the game had different flavor text for it. The detail put into it was unreal.
Both games had a lot of fucking bullshit in the dungeons/combat zones though, to be fair. God damn some of those puzzles were unfun. There's a lot of the good parts of old JRPGs and then there's a lot of the bad parts.
Origins neutered everything that made the original game good for no reason. Ruined combat, ruined HP management, ruined magnus.
Not only that but it's a prequel not a sequel and most of the game is recycled.
>>386707090
>The detail put into it was unreal.
Because it was 90% recycled content.
>>386706930
Only thing really holding II back was the absolutely fucking retarded elemental leveling system.
Also that Metal element enemies had WAY too much fucking HP for how much you encountered them, to say nothing of bosses that can throw down independents at will for free.
Lich and Banshee still a best
>>386702715
literally 3D arena 1v1 game of all time and half the people who played the first game know what it's called, god forbid that a sequel exists
>>386707206
>recycled content
there is no need to shitpost about a game that like 6 people played
>>386707505
Dude. Half the game is just going to places you already saw in BK1.
>>386707090
Origins is definitely the superior game, but I felt that it had some different flaws from the first. Difficulty is really fucking uneven throughout the game, going from hard to alright to OH SHIT within the span of a few hours.
The overall story also feels like it doesn't fit with the first one, oddly enough. Verus being batshit insane seems like it comes out of nowhere and only happens to give Geldoblame a reason to jump off the deep end himself. Wiseman likewise comes out of nowhere at the end for a final boss that didn't need to happen.
It's an enjoyable game, but it just feels...off, in a way I can't describe.
>>386707628
You know that the world itself has only so many places, right? It's the whole point of the setting? Unless you want them to invent a shitton of continents and then pretend they were just off-screen the whole time.
>>386702943
This game was fun as fuck, I'll have to dig it up and play it again some day.
>>386702998
Hum, what didn't you like ? I played both and found the prequel more enjoyable especially the combat.
>>386702715
More like "Bait n' Kekos"
>>386705369
Holy shit
>>386707757
I can accept this. A lot of it I'm sure has to do with having to write things in the constraints of a prequel, and a lot of the flaws present in both games is probably due to the fact they didn't give two fucks about accessibility or ease of play. They both have elements of that peculiarly oldschool JRPG quality that any modern game would've polished out ages ago, like quest magnus that can go bad or that you can only get in specific places requiring tons of backtracking or puzzles that require going back and forth between rooms of respawning enemies like a dozen times, etc. etc.
Maybe a little bigger budget put into editing and trimming down things could've turned them into proper classics, but I'm still pretty happy with both.but origins is still better, teehee
>>386702715
I think I quit this game when I got to this part with a fuck huge bird I couldn't beat.
>>386707206
Combat was vastly improved in Origins, you're delusional. Characters now shared decks, there aren't much annoying Magnus aging bullshit like in the first one, it was all about special abilitie/combos more than slow and defensive like in the first. Also in Origins they reward you for doing chains and combos where in the first it was much a little bonus.
HP Management, whatever... The game was still hard for it's own good, so it's not really a big deal if you get healed after battles.
Quest magnus and sidquests were much better implemented in Origins as well. Recycled environments is one of the downsides but there's still some new places too.
now that we got all that boring shit out of the way, who was best girl?
it's clearlyGuillobut you're all welcome to have your own wrong opinions
>>386707847
That's not a valid excuse.
Just another reaosn why making it a prequel was a shit idea when the ending to the first game involved the birth of a new world.
>>386708665
>Combat was vastly improved in Origins
No. It was ruined on every level.
> Characters now shared decks
Exactly. Deck building was fun and they ruined it.
>there aren't much annoying Magnus aging bullshit like in the first one
Aging magnus was a fun mechanic and another thing they shouldn't have removed.
>The game was still hard for it's own good
Actually, because they wanted to up the challenge in combat, they ended up lengthening most fights to tedious levels. This also removed the item management systems from the previous title with the camp magnus system.
They ruined it. Every unique and fun mechanic got gutted.
