>>386700819
Making trees and other shrubbery look good is literally not worth the processing power, because of how detailed and complex they are, yet how unimportant and uninteresting they are to players.
>>
there's no reason for a game to have complex trees
>>
>>386701809
I agree. We should remove graphics altogether
>>
>>386700819
is there a reason that the top right tree is the only good looking one of the lot
>>
>>386702327
Sure, if you're going for the Runescape aesthetic.
>>
>>386702327
Yes, it's 3dsmax real time view and quality of it, is not the best it's just there to give you representation more than anything else.

I remember being blown away by the trees in Ico 16 years ago. They still look better than trees in many modern games imo.

>Look at some grass.
>It's just some 2D image.

Literally the laziest method.
>>
>>386703464
Its the only method. Do you really want your game to tank your cpu and gpu simulating and rendering every individual blade of grass when it can do the same thing but way cheaper with overlapping textured 2d planes?

lol as if, indie dev here and if I can make individually modeled grass run at 60 fps on the editor with an entry level rig the AAA studios have no excuse
As bad as the game itself is, Star Wars Battlefront is an example of properly done vegetation. Most companies just don't really care about it
>>
>>386704317
If pic related is proof then you're naive. You have no game, you have an empty sandbox with nothing occurring in it. Go back to it after you've added all your AI, scripts, NPCs and other assets and say it runs a perfect 60fps
>>
>>386703972
fucking this

how fucking hard is it to use a billion 1x1 onesided flat surfaces sprinkled over a plane ree

I won't be satisfied until we have pixel perfect representations for every single individual blade. I want to see the dew dancing off that bitch when the sunrise hits.

Though seriously, making grass should not be hard. Look at BotW. If theres one redeeming factor about the game it's that the grass is actual fucking grass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KziP3F4Lak0

>>386704157
Don't give me that shit. If SE didn't blow their budget on CGI movies barely anyone knows about then maybe they could make a half decent game.

>and people wonder why SE was busy taking pictures of rock textures.

See >>386703972

The problem is laziness.

>>386704502
But I just gave you an example of a finished game with properly done vegetation. "Grass is not important" is a valid opinion, "detailed grass can't be done" is just false.
>>
Seems like OP is missing the forest....for the trees.
>>
>>386704502
he's right that just drawing the same simple 3D model a bunch of time is not taking much resources.
It's just that smart devs prefer to use that power for NPCs
>>
>>386704773
>smart devs prefer to use that power for NPCs
All you're doing is enabling laziness. Modern instancing methods exist such that each type of vegetation only requires one (ONE) CPU draw call. That means the impact on the CPU side of the game (AI, scripting, etc) is existent.

>existent
Nonexistent*

As far as using those resources for NPC models and other effects, the few extra milliseconds that it would take the GPU to render the detailed grass is way worth the extra jump in quality. If anything, there is no excuse for devs to include the option for players to select which kind of grass they want.

I enjoy the vegetation in this game, even if the game itself is only meh.
>>
Thats because both xbone and ps4 have about 4 gigs of ram dedicated to game and gfx and the rest of the 8 gigs to os.

They can prob push nice grass models and they have in limited scope. But they have to prioritize the assets they spend ram on.

Only pcs that have giant pools of ram (system ram, video ram, hard drive/ssd) can splurge on making everything on screen as high def as they can.

Half a decade? Consoles have set graphics back at least 30 years already.
>>
>>386707295
Let's not exaggerate, when Crysis 1 was released games were still being made exclusively for computers. It was after 2009, 2011 that the greedy companies jumped into the downgrading bandwagon to get some of the consoles profits.
>>
Trees serve no purpose in gameplay, they shouldn't even be in the game, much less look good. There are only 2 useful types of tree that I've seen in any game. You know how in old FPS games there's just be a wall with a forest texture on it serving as the boundary of a stage, I like that. Furthermore in Danger Girl on the PS1 the trees in the environment are big blocky things that make for good cover.

Same applies to grass. The only grass I like is the grass in FF12. It isn't just some dumb decoration copypasted everywhere, they use it to signify where they've placed invisible walls, just like the forest walls mentioned above.

Consoles. Without consoles we'd easily be gaming at 8-16k with visuals twice if not three times as good as the current standard of the industry. It'd also be far, far more cost effective than a console.

I think Witcher 3 handled it well.

At no point was I pissed off or noticed in an unfavorable way how trees were rendered.

And also I thought the trees+brushes managed to give enough of a visual barrier when exploring so the density of it was just right.

Consoles are literally the only thing keeping gaming alive you retard. Without consoles, there's no profit since all you pc master race neets just pirate everything and normies aren't going to spend a grand just to play video games in HD.
Without consoles we'd still be playing Doom, if that.

The game that still has an active community and is enjoyable decades after release?

Where's the bad part here, exactly?
