Looking at the whole series so far there's Far Cry 1, 2, 3, Blood Dragon, 4, and Primal. 1 is its own beast, the beginning and the end of the collaboration with CryTek. There's good mods for it but it's unlike every game after. 2 is the first game built in Dunia, the only game Clint Hocking ever worked on that shipped, and the only game that's completely meritorious without some particular context. 3 is where the thing starts to slip and good ideas start to go bad. Vaas as a nemesis/antagonist is a great idea. Michael Mando invests the performance with a lot of charisma and really brings the story together. Once he's gone it's pretty much out of gas. On a mechanical level it's a disaster. The crafting system and collectables are nonsensical busywork, the leveling system and the options it gives the player end up forcing the level designers to build structured and paced encounters around the assumption that the player doesn't have any non-mandatory abilities so the level design, system design, and other elements never live up to their potential. Even on the hardest difficulty the game is far easier than Far Cry 2 on normal. Blood Dragon almost seems like a reaction to Far Cry 3's flaws. The removal of open leveling paths means that they have a reasonable idea of what the player can do at any given time, so hand-placed encounters and missions have more finesse to them. The crafting system is dumped entirely, making what was utter busywork in Far Cry 3 into something more engaging - upgrades are unlocked in multiple ways, weapons come as part of the overarching flow of the plot and that allows them to shift design around those changes. Also, while Vaas was a good antagonist, Jason Brody was not a very good protagonist. He wasn't especially relatable and his personality shift was missing a lot of shades to give it grounding.

Look, let's stop baiting for one second and just be honest with each other. I just don't like the far cry series. I tried them, but they they get boring really fast and a lot of what keeps the player busy is doing the same quest spread all over the map. They tend to be a collectathon but the only thing really worth caring about is playing through the story. Also, having played far cry 2 and far cry 3 one of the voice actors has must have a really fucking shitty mike because he sounds really damn muffled and I instantly recognize him when I hear him. The character models tend to be ugly except for the very few major characters in the game. The camera feels weird and the shooting is janky. Weapons just don't feel natural.

Does anyone here actually like the Farcry series? And if so, why?

Far Cry 4 feels like a game that learned some of the lessons that Blood Dragon had on offer but didn't really do much with them. The crafting system is back, in fact it's even worse than it was before. They doubled down on collectibles. The map design is overall better but the basic system oriented issues that plagued Far Cry 3 are still present in 4. There's some tech improvements on display but the game was, last I played it over a year ago, still caught in with some rather strange bugs peculiar to Dunia games. Troy Baker gives the only performance of his I've ever liked, and I didn't even know it was him until I looked up the cast list. Both 3 and 4 suffer from a central problem - they don't seem to have a single driving sense of direction or tone. 3 more than 4. 3 was written by three different writers each with different ideas about what they were doing, and their contributions were mashed together with no central editorial to harmonize them. The result is a completely schizoaffective mess. 4 isn't as out of sorts but it tries to mine situations for drama that are frankly absurd.

Now we come to Primal. The last entry in the series, the only one where a crafting system makes actual sense, and a lot of great ideas undercut by bad ideas. The brutal, primitive wars of extinction are depicted with unflinching honesty. The three tribes hate each other, and set out to destroy one another. And then everything goes to pieces with Beastmaster bullshit, magic owl airstrikes, telepathy, self-indulgent dream sequences and things of that nature. The need to cover for the weaknesses in their formula and their writing with nonsense. Leaving that aside they took some effort to get various parts of the period and place right but then screwed it up with anachronisms such as species of animals that had already been extinct for a million years before the start of the game. The variants on Proto-Indo-European are an impressive effort at reconstruction and also completely wrong for the time period and place. It's lots of little things like that. A superficially impressive experience that lacks real depth and understanding; a Ubisoft game.

The publisher drumming up controversy to get attention on Far Cry 5 reeks of desperation. I haven't paid attention to the pre-release media for it, and I probably won't be buying it unless someone I personally know convinces me to do it.

Far Cry, as a series, just lacks depth. This is has been true for Far Cry 1, Far Cry 2, and Far Cry 3. Though Farcry 2 gets closer to depth than the others but still struggled to maintain my interest after a few hours. It really seems that most of the meat of a Farcry game is just a bunch of busy work; little collectables and jobs that are all the same spread around the map. It easily gets repetitive and I don't see the need to constantly unlock skill and actions throughout the game. I prefer having mechanics being the same throughout the game and just having the difficulty increase steadily throughout. Unfortunately, because of all the collectables you will undoubtedly do at the start and early game I find myself just overqualified and too ready for any kind of challenge that I could be poised in a late game so the end will be far easier than the beginning.

Unfortunately, he's still absent for most of the story, and Ajay Ghale is quite possibly the blandest Far Cry protagonist yet. It's a decent game. Basically a less ambitious version of Shadow of Chernobyl. I actually liked the Malaria thing hanging over my head as I played it. It made keeping meds stocked up important but as a background element. It could grind the game to a halt, which is worse than simply killing the player. But the thing that's important about it relative to the other games is that it's its own thing. It was clearly Ubisoft's team offering their own spin on how they wanted to pick up where CryTek had left off, and they went in a completely different direction from the first game, taking more notes from Boiling Point (which I've only ever read about) and Shadow of Chernobyl (which I've played extensively) than other mission-based shooters. Its flaws are undeniable but the core of the game isn't fundamentally broken like 3 and 4 are.

I only played a little bit of it myself, but I did like it. The first game I was reminded of, strangely enough, was Delta Force. The use of layout and the emphasis on an open environment with multiple approaches really did seem to draw inspiration from the early DF games. The availability of health packs being a classical Doom style thing, rather than a resource you can build up and discharge as needed (if I remember it right, that's how the health system worked) combined with the high number of hitscan weapons made playing it on a hard difficulty a very tense experience, and none of the games after it really could do it justice.

last time i bought ubisoft game was when i got anno 2070 from some special steam sale
