Is it based on getting resources every turn to play cards like Hearthstone? If so then I'm out. Play Points are the worst mechanic in a card game that turns what could be an interesting deck building experience into a game that's 50% Skill (Deck composition and play patterns) and 50% luck (did you draw the shit you needed). THe only way to get over it is to either have a shitload of generalist cards, or to have tutors out the ass, both of which are terrible solutions to a problem that shouldn't exist.

That's part of the issue, yeah. The issue of them delaying and delaying HL3 without openly admiting the game is dead, so they can focus their forces in making hats for their f2p games pisses people off.
They shoot themselves in the foot by not wrapping Half Life 2 ep2 with a proper ending for Half Life instead of makign a cliffhanger to milk more episodes, only to ditch the idea when they realized you can get even more money with hats.

The pot's been boiling for some time now, and announcement this is triggering a reaction that sooner or later was going to happen.

And this is only one of the problems, mind you.

My one hope for this game is that it will actually be a fair free-to-play model.

Dota 2 is one of the most fair F2P games that exists. Every single gameplay related thing is available for free, all the monetization is in the form of cosmetics. You don't get a single tangible gameplay advantage by paying, only things that make the game personalized and pretty.

Obviously this is harder to do with a card game. But what I see very likely happening is direct Steam Marketplace integration, where users can buy, sell, and trade their individual cards with other users and completely bypass the RNG game. And on top of this you'll see the usual Valve thing of adding pretty lights and particles and card backs, so on and so forth.

That's the only reason I'm still optimistic about it.
>>
>>386700336
Valve just allowed them. They didn't preach them. And Bethesda has shown that paid mods will be a thing and people will accept them.

You overestimate the selfcontrol of the average vidya consumer whore.

Imagine that Valve made Hearthstone back in 2014.

All the cards would be free.
Every hero would have a million alternative portraits.
Every card would have 2 million different entry animations that make no sense.
Every card would have 10 million alternative art which make absolutely no sense and makes it impossible to recognize what the opponent just played without having to reread the card text.
And the first expansion would release Soonâ„¢

TF2 has been hyping a major update that's set to fix the most broken class in the game for a year now.
CSGO is growing stale fast and is majorly imbalanced due to them making changes that should have gone to a PTR server, which CSGO doesn't have and sorely needs.
DotA itself is starved for content.
The Half-Life franchise still doesn't have a conclusion and has been left on one of the worst cliffhangers in gaming history for a decade.

If anything, Dota is getting the wrong type of content. Valve has somehow managed to alienate a large portion of the silent part of the playerbase while still not delivering on promises made in 2010 that would have a massive impact on the playability of the game.

Also HL is completely fucked, all their writers left.

My main question is what approach will they take to the game. Will it be a more streamlined approach like Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm, or will it be archaic and complicated like Dota 2 and MTG.

On the surface it looks like a pretty creatively bankrupt effort. The card game market is pretty saturated right now and its very doubtful that Valve suddenly discovered a new way to play cards that will render other games obsolete.

It feels less like a creative venture (which all of their other games were) and more of a financial one.

Because there's not ONLY hearthstone.
There's hearthstone, gwent, some kind of elder scrolls card game, shadowverse. Basically you name a big game franchise and theres a dev somewhere losing sleep over how to make a card game out of it. It's fucking pitiful and not where video games should be headed.

Because they express themselves via the playercount, which has been dropping hard since the start of this year. It's worth noting again that Dota is the only game whose playercount was totally unaffected by Overwatch's free weekend last year.

That's the thing though, with platforming games and ACTUAL games the devs have a chance to create a new experience. With card games you're already painted into a corner because we all KNOW this game isn't going to be revolutionary.

You know why most card games are dead games? Because they are all the same, why play a knockoff if the real thing is completely free? That's the issue and valves abomination isn't going to bring this genre back from the dead.

That's why everybody is calling this an abortion and why it's not ok to continue this trend in a place where creative integrity is limited because companies are just in it for the money. What more can be done with cards that hasn't already been done? 3 simultaneous boards with 5 heroes and creep waves, give me a break, valve didn't even want to try, they are importing the idea (that's not even theirs) into card format and it is going to be DoA.

Keep in mind of valves game track record and tell me you aren't entirely disappointed with this decision. Try it, your fingers won't let you type it.

Valve did F2P right in Dota 2, because they would have had absolutely no chance of convincing the existing DotA playerbase of 7-11 millions to transition over to Dota 2 if they had locked gameplay behind a paywall. It was also probably an Icefrog stipulation that the gameplay be completely free. Also, don't forget that in TF2, you still need to buy the weapons, which provide gameplay differences, if you want to use them.

There is no reason to believe their F2P model for Artifact will be consumer-friendly at all. It's easy to guess that it will be an economics experiment that uses their marketplace in a more prevalent aspect of the game (i.e. card trading)

You'd think that, but you'd be wrong. At this point tons of people have hundreds, thousands of hours of dota games, but are no longer playing. People who play games which require quick thinking and reflexes eventually grow up and aren't as quick anymore, and they move to other slower competitive games like card games, including poker. I imagine there's no better time for Valve to release a card game seeing as how DotA has been a thing for more than a decade now.

You have your game plan, your opponent has theirs and you both set up your board and hope your game plan somehow wins out. There are very few situations where you change your plays to counter your opponent. And you only get like 5 """"turns"""". They needed to flesh out the concept more. Nice menu interface though.

I'm actually shocked that Dota is not #1 for Peru
>>
>>386723191
We don't have proper channels for it like other countries do yet. I still remember when they aired a half hour bit on ESPN during TI4 and Twitter immediately blew up with "WHY ARE VIDEO GAMES ON ESPN" and "Lol whats with that guy's suit"

Ricochet 2 unironically would've been more interesting than this.

It's
>The same highly divisive IP that they've been working on almost exclusively for like 6 years
>A card game so most of the shit that's interesting about vidya probably won't be here because it's a card game
>>
>>386723191
Call of Duty is THE dudebro game across all cultures in America. It's maximum normie. People who don't play games will buy COD because they actually know it exists.

A card game would be the next logical step for Valve. They're all about microtransactions these days, and online collectible card games has it built right in for actually making the game playable for yourself. You don't leave that kind of money just lying on the table.

I think you're unlikely to get a new "actual game" from Valve that's not in VR
>>

Half Life 3 will never happen. The target audience for that series is much older, and Valve has abandoned that audience (which is slightly annoying, because that audience helped get Valve to where they are).

The newer generations of gamers only really know the Half-Life series by jokes withing gaming groups. Only a small handful would've even bothered actually playing them. They're the new target audience for Valve.

From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense. Why worry about an old series that only older gamers would care about? From an older fan perspective, it completely sucks. Just got to accept that it's an abandoned series, though.

Is now the time to get into dota? Is the NA scene receptive to new players, or do MOBA players still hate themselves and everyone else too much?

>Also, don't forget that in TF2, you still need to buy the weapons, which provide gameplay differences, if you want to use them
Not true; even F2P players get weapon drops just by playing, as well as achievement items. Also, you can trial items for free, and you get a bunch of items every Christmas and Halloween.

You can get every single weapon unlock in TF2 without spending a cent if you play for a month or two, or you can get every single weapon unlock in TF2 instantly by spending 1 dollar to buy a key and trading it.
