Just make a balanced roster with 2 tanks, 2 melee dps, 2 casters 1 of which is a sage, 1 wizard, I have a ranger and a thief, ranger/berserker is good for lethal blow.

When you roll characters make sure you get above 23+ on the 5d8 roll. Spend hp on casters for bonus points, attributes if your tank have enough hp.

Something Has Messed Up Grimoire So Badly I Can't Even Understand How It Is Possible
It has lost the ability with simple ANSI C file commands to overwrite a file or delete an existing one. I have never seen anything like it in thirty years of programming, never, on an application anywhere. "NO, DON'T OVERWRITE THIS FILE" is not a windows message. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

The sample savegames were uploaded by people pirating the software. That was a pirated version they uploaded. There were pirates asking for support on this forum. I don't know if they have introduced a very ugly virus into the program. I trusted them when I had a look at their samples but discovered later these are all pirated copies they were ASKING FOR SUPPORT for on this forum.

These are simple file commands to create, write and erase files. I took out ALL file commands to get permissions for user app files and rolled BACK to what was there before. There is nothing to these commands, no special windows tokens for users, no file specs on files. I deleted my target directory and started in a new one. The problem is still there. Grimoire can't even simply create files, erase them and write new ones. I have never seen something so messed up.

This is why we can't have nice things on this planet.

I am running my AV software with new definitions and trying some new things with file permissions, I have to work carefully and see if I can isolate the problem. These aren't fancy Windows file writes we are talking about. These are vanilla C commands working for 20 years, never had a problem of any kind.

I am really sorry about this and working constantly on the problem. It's a shame because the game was just now reaching a nice stable version before this nightmare. Now it has basically been sabotaged in Steam ratings and is giving newcomers a terrible impression of the game.

There is a spell called detect secret that you can even start the game with and it will tell you if you are on a tile that contains anything hidden.

Some are a little esoteric, but the vast majority are pretty simple. A lot of them, probably most of them even, are very neat and well designed. Just pirate one of the older versions and try it, dude. If you still don't like the game by the end of Aquavia you're probably not going to like it, but at least try to get that far.

I'm playing Wizardry 7 right now before Grimoire to try to have the most contextual appreciation for the genre. There is also Might and Magic: World of Xeen which others have strongly recommended. Those are the essentials for noobs to this type of RPG game.

Wizardry 7 is cool. It's hard. But it's not impossible. If you stick with it past the kind of confusing and dusty interface, you begin to feel rewarded. It's really just the initial "what the fuck is this shit" factor when you start playing, like navigating the area, making it past the confusing visuals a bit, and kind of coming to grasp the system of battles. After you kill some shit you get the hang of it and you're basically on your way.

What I love about Wizardry 7 and this genre, so far, is that in comparison with other RPGs this really takes the "role playing" aspect (of dungeons and dragons) and makes it center stage. There is more depth to the combat and system in general than any other RPG I've personally done so far. It really makes you think. And it really creates a level of immersion other games like Fallout 2 and Baldurs Gate 2, which are considered the best of the RPG genre, can't touch (in my opinion).

You're literally in the world. And the characters are created by YOU. And they have character. Everything is a challenge and really requires thought and effort, and for that reason you really feel like you're there. Real life isn't easy. And neither are these games. That's why it really feels like a journey and experience. For me that's what makes it more worth playing than other RPGs right now. If you like depth and possibilities and the feeling and reward you can get from that kind of gameplay, I'd say Wizardry 7 is unparalleled.

The DOS interface and sound/music kind of suck so I am thinking about just listening to other music while playing from now on.

All of this is completely untrue. First negative reviews were all about crashes and various bugs and issues. But the positive ones were all meme reviews about incline without anything related with game at all, or "best game in history, will write more later" after playing for 5 minutes, which if steam actually cared about moderation should be deleted. Day after release there were 2 or 3 proper positive reviews, which authors actually wrote about the game itself and why they think it is good. honest opinion from someone who has only played a small amount of these games, wizardry 4 being one of them:

if you like first person DRPG's, it's good, but unbalanced. you can choose to not use the unbalanced stuff (any hirable NPC is strong for their level, there is a bugged? spell that does over 1000 damage for very little mana) and raise the difficulty and random encounter rate (there are also fixed encounters) to add more difficulty. crashing seems to be somewhat frequent no matter what version you play, so use all 12 save slots and save frequently, and keep backups (i have saved right before a crash loop and lost 2 hours of progress having to load an older save when i should have been saving every 5-10 minutes)

the race/class system is kind of weird, there is no official manual yet so everyone is learning by doing, nobody knows specifically what all the stats do, etc. i'm not sure if i would pay full price for this yet, but if you like the genre, it might be worth it. there does seem to be a massive amount of content in the game, i am about 25 hours in and still on the first chapter, pic related are my stats, only 12% of the entire game world explored so far

Even if Grimoire were a small percentage of the game Wiz7 was, it would still be better than most other games to a lot of people.

Taking into account that it's basically Wiz7 with lots of the old DOS shit filled in with detail and with better writing, I don't see how anyone could say it isn't at least as good or understand why other people wouldn't feel that way

People don't want to admit that this is a great game, seems like, because the creator isn't towing the line enough to make it through the gatekeepers of "VIDEO GAMING TM"

yeah it was just a short blurb i wrote, i'm not really damning the game, i mean i'm 25 hours into it and still going, i enjoy it. it's just definitely not for everyone and there will be hurdles of confusion and frustration to get past. the midi music is great i think for the atmosphere, but monster sounds are fucking awful. I have enjoyed the writing and the need to actually SOLVE QUESTS that aren't extremely simple, like the puzzle for the kroondergraf machine and the related text.

yeah honestly the sound/music in the Wizardry games is bordering on unfathomably terrible.
