because of its nature as a voxel-like game, terraria has potentially more longevity but only autists get any enjoyment out of playing a clunky paint simulator. The fun of Terraria is exploring the world, beating bosses, finding cool new equipment, not spending 10 hrs building a 2D castle that nobody gives a shit about

so yeah because of that it brings a lot of other games into the frey honestly. Stardew isn't the only cheap indie game with 40+ hours of gameplay out of it, but I can't think of any others off the top of my head

Dude, Starbound is really shitty. And I do not agree with /v/ on most things.

There's basically no reason to play the game, no wonder or everything. You have it all laid out in front of you, as if you're playing a progress bar. That little hub or whatever with all the shops and NPCs reminds me of Kerning City in Maple Story, it just looks so terrible. And you can get pretty much every upgrade in the game from that spot. Like holy shit how gay is that.

And when you go to buy an upgrade you get to see what all the other available upgrades in the game are. My god that totally killed it for me. Lost interest after 5 hours.

Terraria has so many items that all do different and interesting things, and you'll find them randomly as you explore the world. Seriously there's almost no category in which Starbound beats Terraria, even the gameplay is more stiff.

Played pre-ordered beta for around 2 hours, and spent around 30 minutes in one of the latest updates. The story doesn't make it any better imo

I've put in over 200 hours in Dungeon of Dredmor and can keep going, but Terraria is a good pick too.

Not if you've been playing since the beginning. Starting a new character for every major update since 1.0 has been a more fun experience than I've had with any other game, multi or singleplayer.
This playtime is low compared to a lot of people on this site, too.

I most likely have somewhere close to yours, but I only bought it on steam on my most recent playthrough and put about 25 hrs into it. I have to wait a while in between, but I definitely can start a new Terraria game every once in a while and get a ton of enjoyment out of it.

There's a lot to break down here

Terraria's gameplay is similar to a metroidvania in that it's a 2D action-platformer with a large world. The difference is, Terraria's is randomly generated and has basically no story. The game's building features are much more fluid than Minecraft's and you can weave building into combat much more easily. They may not have the same level of complexity (idk because i don't play either game for building stuff) but the way the building aspect is woven into the core gameplay of exploring/combat is way better than Minecraft. One example is how it's a pain in the ass to build a quick sky bridge in minecraft whereas that's a standard activity in Terraria.

It really stops resembling a Metroidvania when you isolate it from its "engine" or whatever, the 2D platforming aspect of it. There's no central villain or dungeons to complete, it's just about collecting materials to upgrade your equipment while occasionally finding really sweet items that have unique powers. Boss fights are not a major part of the game, there are only a small handful of them. The game is comfy and free-form rather than focused and challenging.

Your criticism of the game was over-simplified and I tried to break down why here, hopefully it made sense.
