Dragon Quest 4 is always my suggestion. There's a phone version or you can emulate either the original NES or the DS remake.

I recommend it because it does a great job presenting the different types of characters gradually.

DQ5 is probably the one with the best storytelling in the entire series. For that one you can do SNES emulation, DS emulation or phone.

DQ3 is the absolute classic and a must play. There's the original NES, SNES remake or Gameboy Color one. Or phone again. You can customize your party, giving the game a lot of replay value.

DQ 1 + 2 are relics but decent anyway. 1 is SUPER short and you can get it done in about 2 hours, even less if you know your way around it. DQ2 has some super neat elements into it with subtle storytelling and the party variety was a great new element. But the last area of the game is absolute hell and completely unfair, so it can be a pain to get through.

DQ6 is... pretty. And big. It has a GREAT beggining and a GREAT end. But the 80% of the middle feels too much like wandering aimlessly. Still, Barbara best girl!

DQ7 is FUCKING MASSIVE and it can kill your drive to keep playing DQs. Only approach it if you know and prepare for a LONG playthrough.

DQ8 is GORGEOUS, it adds pretty neat voice acting and has a pretty nice and fleshed out story. Hero x Medea is adorable. It adds new mechanics that are... okay? It still keeps the core DQ gameplay so it's fine.

DQ9 is kind of shitty to play nowadays because most of its value was in the post-game. And since the Nintendo wifi network is dead... It's still a decent DQ that tries to be DQ3 since you can customize your entire party, but it doesn't really get the same charm.

yeah, it was created in response to FF5. And FF5 did it so much better that there's no comparison.

There's also the fact that FF5 had this high profile public translation, and DQ6 only got the 90% finish noprogress translation, which wasn't that great.

And there's the fact that DQ6 has some slow as hell pacing, completely uninteresting characters, and a 'reveal' which while somewhat awesome, just didn't quite have the power that you expect from the usual DQ mid-game transition.

Bear in mind that there was a time when 'the last boss isn't the last boss' was once a new and fresh concept, and it was starting to get old as shit right when DQ6 came out

I just wrote a few words, but I'll add a couple more. The middle of the game is boring because it gives you a lot of freedom but no clear objective. You can head in any direction and just get to a new area where you're forced to solve that specific town's problems. But it's almost always contained to that one town. There are no real ongoing plot threads or elements that build up. So by the time you did your nth town quest you just forgot the previous town's story.
None of it ends up being memorable and you just keep wishing the game would develop the story or characters or ANYTHING AT ALL.

The Alltrades Abbey system also doesn't help because it makes it WAY too easy to just teach every character everything, so they end up being generic as fuck in their gameplay just like in the story. You CAN make Hassan/Carver just a Fighter/Crusader/Whatever and his stats do tend to be better physically. But it makes little difference to do that or just make him a Wizard so he can Bikill himself.

I'm thinking about getting into dragon quest, what's a good game to start with?

VIII fags are just normies with no broader understanding of what makes the series good. They're also often graphics/VA/orchestrafags.

VII fags act as if the sheer size of VII somehow makes the world more deep and nuanced than it actually is. In reality it's a pretty linear slog through all these isolated areas that occasionally connect back to one another. Also add 4 times as much town exploration/pot smashing and you have DQ VII. I like doing that shit in DQ games but holy shit DQ VII has you do it twice, and has it be absolutely necessary to progress. The payoff was extremely underwhelming too, I got way more out of what DQ V's plot did.
