The story and dialogue/choices were, yes. It was as linear as a JRPG without the actual story depth of a story told in that manner.

The game itself was good, though. It was a bit unfortunate that most of the weapon mods were straight upgrades instead of customization options. Since it's a bethesda game you do get hilarious physics or ragdoll fuck ups sometimes, but honestly the game is better for them.

Eh not as bad as most would say. Story wasn't impressive, but not Borderlands 2 levels of garbage. I had a blast, I enjoyed The Brotherhood of Steel, I liked Nick Valentine, Far Harbor was a fantastic DLC, and the Handmade Rifle makes me shoot ropes of jizz.

Also overall I was just happy to see a graphical update to Fallout after being familiar with 3/NV Fallout, much as I hold the nostalgia close to my heart.

As for the point in the OP, it had it's faults, allot of them but I did have fun with it, I don't want to use the tired 'It's a good game but not a good fallout game' people toss around but it's sort of how I feel. Or more accurately it's one of my favorite 6/10 games. Slightly above par, relatively unremarkable, but I had fun with it. Weapon modification was pretty neat I hope they expand on it in the future.

Had some good things.
Settlement building was neat.
Combat was good (comparing to Fallout 3)
Commonwealth > DC Wasteland
FO4 DLC > FO3 DLC
Companions are better
Fallout 4 at least had factions even though they all kind of sucked.

But here's the bad.
Completely butchered the roleplaying.
Removed skills entirely in favor of perks.
Dialog choices is "good, meh, no" with the occasional SPECIAL check.
Character customization is there but you're still playing McFuckface-in-a-freezer and his story, not really your own.
Removed Karma and replace it with if you did good or bad things depending on your companions, you'll get a quest from them, it's not exactly bad but they fucked with karma to begin with, so this is a negative.
Too easy, by the time you get the ballistic weave, you'll be raping death claws in seconds with no fear of even losing more than 25% of health. Not only this but you can walk out on dialog! Who thought was that a good idea?

In my opinion, Bethesda should stop making RPGs, especially ones based around beloved series, and instead make action games with role playing aspects. They're good at making open world games that you just want to explore shit, collect shit and shoot shit, but unholy god of fuck are they terrible at roleplaying.

Yes, even the gunplay gets boring because of the level scaling.

Yes. It was awful in every way imaginable. They didn't put any effort into anything. The Commonwealth was a complete mess. People mock 3 but 3 had a sense of proper placement. Super mutants were concentrated mostly in DC as were the BoS. Settlements didn't have cluster fucks of danger completely surrounding them like in 4. 3 was a reasonable, desolate shit hole. 4 was a shooting gallery for gay random loot like Flamethrowers that deal freeze damage. They barely put any effort into any aspect of the game. Bethesda usually at least had decent base experiences that people could mod, but FO4 can't be fixed because every aspect is shit.

Gunplay was fine, writing for the mainstory was trash (I don't know why people fixate on this, this is a running theme in bethesda games, the main story is just an excuse to visit like 12 specific places).

The only 2 things it did better than any of the other nu-fallout is artistic direction, which legitimately looked how I always envisioned a fallout world looking, and quest design. That fucking robot ship was by far the most interesting and engaging quests I've ever played in an open world game. And it has so many little possibilities in it without ever having to rely on shitty conversation checks. Legit a 10/10 quest, there were a couple other noteworthy ones but that one was by far the best.

I got it for the free weekend and couldn't stand it more than 45 minutes. It's simultaneously the worst Fallout game, the worst Bethesda developed game, the worst Bethesda published PC port and one of the worst sequels. When it comes to taking a few steps forward and thousands back, I think the only one that beats Fallout 4 is Thi4f.

The problem with Fallout 4 was a lack of thought and care being put into the main plot.

In part because the lead writer was a hack, but also probably burnt-out and in need of something other than fucking Bethesda Open World RPG's

Bethesda has a very shallow grasp on the fallout setting.

The wasteland in Fallout 3 (and arguably in New Vegas since it borrowed a lot of assets from Fallout 3) was kind of dopey in that it didn't look/feel quite like 250+ years post-war

That said, Fallout 4 kind of fucked itself right off the bat with it's premise/central-conflict, and it's factions.

They were terribly thought out, terribly written, terrible in so many ways,

the random-gen weapons/le-ebin-shit was probably just the most insulting,

it's one thing if a variant/special-version of a gun has bigger magazines, flatter trajectory, higher velocity, faster/slower RoF, or accepts/is chambered for a different kind of ammo.

The way Bethesda did it made it clear it was a prototype for the next elder scrolls game, and that they didn't give a shit about Fallout.
