Where did the Loot Crate meme originate? Do we have a genesis point? The first game I played with them was Black Ops 3 but I am aware they were a thing long before that. CS:GO? It was probably CS:GO.

I fucking hate it and I need to know where to direct my anger.

I can't tell you its origin, but it was molded and perfected by Valve's economists and psychologists who were hired to figure out how to squeeze every last penny from you. Honestly, I thought the mann co store and its loot crates and keys were ridiuclous at the time. I laughed at the people throwing their money at it. And yet, it became normalized, and people willingly threw their money at it.

Because Loot boxes are addicting. They give you a "Hey I might get a really rare thing!" feeling that push you to want more.

Which lead to more of a player base coming back. In Single player game it's just a little weird but work too.
>>
>>386643360
it's most of why mobage make money, and its a metric ass fuck of money. puzzle and dragon was turning nintendo-like profits for a while right around that time. the shift from game effecting items to largely cosmetic probably has more to do with cutting the designers out of the content release process.

Funny enough Valve is probably one of the companies that has made loot boxes made right. You can actually trade the content you get from the boxes, you can buy what's in the boxes on the community market if you don't want to gamble.

Even tho it's a greedy and jewish system it's at least 100000x times better than how Blizzard and shit does with their boxes.

Jewing is still jewing, even if you are not required to buy the 40 dollar cosmetic set, it's still outrageously overpriced.

No one forces you to buy a Lamborghini in real life either, but most people agree that they are sold at ridiculous profit margins compared to what it actually costs to make them, aka jewery.
>>
Mass Effect 3
>>
>>386644505
It's priced what it's priced. The game is free. They make money from people who spend money on cosmetics.

Really, they are not greedy. You can also just buy the cheaper options. Or spend 3$ and roll a Mystery Box and hope to get a 20$ piece like I did.

Or just play a game that everybody would have been okay with paying 60$ for, for free.

No, it's perfectly reasonable to ask, and even admirable to try to find an answer. It's a field of study, and people spend their whole lives trying to figure that out.

Expecting someone to have the answer here and now, though. That's unreasonable.
>>
>>386644505

>>
>all the most popular games have crates
Why is this?
>>
>>386644714
Sure, I understand that they have to make profit from something, but 40 dollars for a cosmetic set is absolutely ridiculous. You can get a whole other game for that price.

Pricing their cosmetic stuff with such ludicrous mark ups will also discourage potential customers from buying them. I know I would have jumped at the opportunity to buy something from the store if the currency for it was even slightly more reasonably priced.

Another thing is how they do not offer exact amounts of the currency, but force you to buy set amounts at set prices. They then price things along the lines of 210 or other, slightly above the cutoff point for their packages, goading you to cough up the cash for 400 points even if you only need the 210.

Again, I understand that profit needs to be made, but this goes beyond making ends meet and is harmful only to them, as people will not invest in something that costs so much.

What? It's the law of offer and demand. If the demand is too low they will have to reduce the offer or not sell anything.

Obviously, the offer is right because they make money.

And like I said, people pretty much mostly go for the Mystery boxes.

no you

we are talking about a comparison of fairness between getting more inventory space for free with a bit of extra effort in an ARPG and get a so called disadvantage for a paid item in a MOBA.

you want me to stop? you need to realize something good for extra work for free is as fair, if not fairer, than something good for a price.
>>
Other than them being shit in general i cant stand the recent trend of color coating rarities. They call shit "LEGENDARY" when its really as common as dirt and its value is subjective to the user. They are like holographic cards but more worthless because they sit in your virtual inventory unused. The only reason this shit exists is because its like crack to retards thinking they have somthing worth while when really theyd have been better off getting shards/gold/whatever from a dupe so they can actually buy what they fucking want.
>>
>>386651127
The "disadvantage" isn't even real in Dota. So you are taking about how you only need an extra computer (seems you are too dumb to use a virtual machine) and waste a lot of time in choring activities to make the game bearable to anyone with half brain.

You poorly bating effort doesn't even deserve a fish pic.

>>
>>386650914
I just don't buy or support games that use crates. It's the same for games that have gameplay effecting cash shops.

However, games that have a purely aesthetic cash shop are a compromise I can live with because it's a way to support something that I love without a subscription. I'm not saying I would rather not just get it for free in game, but publishers constantly whine about the rising cost of making games. So if this is the options for compromise I would pick the lesser of the evils.
