He's a legendary product of the time, 12 year olds actually liked him without realizing that he's literally an unintentional parody of the direction that the Sonic franchise and the 2000s were going. He's a cartoon animal with cartoon cloves who uses evil psychic powers and guns and rides motorcycle talks in a whispery growly voice, has red eyes, and says damn. He's also the only Sonic character to get his own real back story and of course, its dark and tragic, because his human fucking girlfriend got shot.

I like Shadow but can no longer remember if I did it ironically at first. As a kid he had a stupid design and had guns in a game that didn't need fucking guns but as I got older I realize the parody aspects of him and started to appreciate it.

I also think his titular game was more fun than people give it credit for.

He was fine as Sonic!Vegeta in Adventure 2, and generally awful as the edgy caricature of it in his own game. Unluckily the latter is the one he's most often depicted as, though things like he comics and Chronicles will still give him a decent showing sometimes.

Shadow's kind of boring. He never embraced his role as Evil Sonic and has always been more of a Selfish Sonic, which is a pretty uninteresting motivation.

It's because the Shadow the Hedghdog game was incredibly embarrassing for the Sonic brand and for its fanbase.

That said, I still like Shadow. He was great in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Battle. Honestly though, he should have just died for good. His return to the series in Heroes was shockingly awful. Sonic and co. barely even bat an eye.

What the Sonic games built themselves up on weren't the things that the character Shadow brought to the table. The furthest that a rival with an attitude that constantly tried to thwart Sonic should be was already done with Knuckles. It wasn't a melodramatic story, it didn't have curse words, it didn't have that character using guns. It just doesn't fit the universe that was built upon for almost an entire decade up to that point. It is the reason why Wario works as Mario's adversary while Shadow just doesn't work.
