Gothic 2 with expansion has much more fluid mechanics and more side quests. It's way too hard though and you have to do literally everything there is in correct order for your character to be good.

2 is kinda generic. My only problem with both is that you start in this comfy, misanthropic shithole where you have to survive, but by the end you're saving the world. I dislike that. The first acts are the best in both games.

2 is better than 1 in everything but the scenario, which is still decent mind you. Better gameplay, better NPCs, bigger world and a lot more stuff to do.

I like what both games have to offer, the unique and interesting valley in 1 and the dark brooding forests of 2. Although the story of 1 was somewhat more original, both are my favourite rpg's. Great soundtrack too.
