I've not been following VR but why have they decided to had those hand sticks? It looked perfect before when it was just the headset + controller setup.

Why add handsticks that stop traditional movement and force you to wave your arms around wii-mote style to play the game? This isn't comfortable.

>tfw just got the touch controllers because I only had the headset before.

Feels good man. Wish Onward was on sale, though. I've got $60 in Steam cards, want to make the money last. No idea what else I'd get.

If any of you are interested in VR, you should get the Oculus client now, get an account, and secure a copy of Echo Arena before they start charging full price for it. It's only going to be free for a few months or something. Really cool game. You can delete it afterwards or whatever.

>>386637182
Anything intense to suggest (especially free/mods)? I want to play high-action or horror titles with standard locomotion (not teleporting).

>>386636783
Honey Select is nice. Very comfy game, for lack of a better descriptor. Has integrated VR, but the mod for it is better.
>>
>>386637143
It isn't an insane amount of work. In the end, it's got an amazing character editor, and it feels really intimate throughout the whole process. I liked it.

Robo Recall and Serious Sam are fantastic, especially once you get over how weird using control sticks to move instead of that teleporting thing feels. Robo Recall is especially what I expected VR to be like when I was a kid.

Well since you already got Doom 3 BFG, you already got the most PTSD-inducing game. I still haven't finished it.
The Bellows also is a free, short and spooky experience with some jump scares.
You should also try the Organ Quarter demo, feels like some old horror game in VR.
I haven't played them yet, but there are VR ports of the Serious Sam games that have free movement, guess you can't go more high-action than that..

Yo Robo Recall was the first game I tried.(I bought first day of the 399 sale) As soon as I teleported up on top a truck and started shooting down on robots, I knew I was going to love VR. What a fucking thrill.
To anybody else that has a rift, I can recommend Wilson's Heart if you want thriller/horror. But holy goddamn mother Theresa, horror in vr is no joke. Horror in every other medium doesn't faze me but this turns me into baby crying for mama.

I believe there's a title intended for VR, but it didn't look that great. Didn't know there were ports for the other games, though.

VR fapping is always a bunch of work.
With HS, you install the game, install the english patch, install the VR patch, and drag and drop whatever mods you want for character creation.
Hongfire has a pretty active community when it comes to mods.
If you want total ease of use and no effort, you use waifu sex simulator and its preset scenes, just keep in mind that the quality of animation and models isn't going to be up to par with with 3DCM or HS.

>>
>>386638148
Two controllers, and a wireless dongle. Makes me glad I pulled the trigger early in the sale.
>>
>>386637143
You can do Honey Select with a minimal amount of work:
>download https://sukebei.nyaa.si/view/2313251
>get uncensor patch
>get english patch
>get IPA mod and run its exe once
>get ggmod
>get wideslider and run its exe once
>get VR mod (the native VR is shit, VR mod is 1000x better) and run the game from its exe when you want vr
>download character cards from roy12
That's all the vital stuff. Everything else is either grafix enhancements like sweetfx, or hair and clothing, which roy12 includes with his cards unlike everyone else. Getting cards from other people is going to be hit or miss because they'll have their own personal assortment of mods used, and even if you download every mod in existence, there will be conflicts and not every card will work. Many of them don't live up to the card image on top of that.

I was disappointed with this one. I'd been waiting to play it for weeks, and then I finally get my headset and the game stutters like crazy, and there's no advanced options to mess with settings, just blanket settings like high or low. They're supposed to be doing a lot of performance fixes in the next few months, though so I guess I'll have to wait until october to play it.

My #1 use for my headset has been to use my computer without getting out of bed using Virtual Desktop, but reading regular sized text is next to impossible so I have to use the magnifier tool windows has meant for blind people

Last I heard, the 2 GTA V Vr mods are in a really basic state, and no longer in development. Not worth getting the game for VR.
Doom 3 BFG definitely is worth it for VR alone, I still got an early version of the VR mod installed and haven't bothered updating it since it was already good enough for me.
>>
>>386638575
/v/ is full of people who haven't tried VR (or barely tried some shit demo/experience), then proceed to say it's shit.

VR is intended for many different audiences. The field of games is so diverse to accommodate the many different audiences. The people who are waiting on a next gen HMD are the same people who are always going to wait on a next gen HMD. They are not the audience, but they are many of the people who inhabit /v/.

There's also the people who wanted to jump on it when it was expected to be $300-400. That sweet spot has been hit and surpassed considering the addition of the controllers and bunch of games in the summer bundle. I'm a little sour that I'm not getting all the stuff everyone else is and had to pay more since I got the HMD alone beforehand.

>>386638881
(Not the person you're speaking to, but:)

The vive came with controllers for 8 months or so before the rift. That made every article and individual person more interested in it as a result. It has better tracking too.

Rift was originally just head tracking + 3d monitor so you could play your flight sims and shit like you're actually in them -- the "headset + controller setup" you mention.

Then a competitor showed up and made roomscale a thing. Turns out that making the player stand up and use a couple wiimotes really amplifies the "feels like you're really there" effect

First off before we all start bandwagoning our preference companies like this is some dumb console wars bullshit you have to understand that all three were working together. Valve invited Sony as well as Oculus to their think tank where they were given lighthouse prototypes. This is common knowledge and is a rather interesting story if you can be assed to do a Google search.

Now to answer your question Alan Yates said so. Now if it's true or not it's hard to tell since only a handful of humans actually understand how to create/replicate this tech.
>>

Ctrl+mousewheelup until your browser is set to 170% zoom, that's about how big the text has to be on your screen in order to be completely legible on a virtual monitor, unless you make the monitor so big that you can only see half of it at once.
>>
>>386646783
Hopefully Subnautica will improve now that they're took on 2 more people and are FINALLY fixing the fucking performance issues.
>>
>>386646783
>Hope you're running 2 GTX 1080 Tis SLI to get that shit to a stable FPS
There's no such thing as a stable FPS in Subnautica no matter what system you're running it on.

>>386646880
I'm not saying anything about my preferences, I'm just saying that Lighthouse is pretty unique. It has the stationary things project points of light and then has the headset pick up their locations. Rift and PSVR have the stationary components pick up points of light located on the headset, which is how headtracking has been done for fucking years.

To say they took the idea from lighthouse when trackir and opentrack have been a thing for ages seems pretty misinformed to me, but most posts on /v/ that claim to be "common knowledge" are usually pretty misinformed.

>Now if it's true or not it's hard to tell since only a handful of humans actually understand how to create/replicate this tech
I literally set up my own non-VR headtracking last year by taking the LEDs from a Wii sensor bar, connecting them to a battery and putting them on my headphones, then taking a PS3 Eye with the inside part of a floppy disc over the lens as an infrafred filter to track the LED's position. I guess I'm one of those handful of humans.

They took the tech, learned everything they could about it then split and stopped taking valve's calls in relation to what was originally supposed to be the holy trinity of VR development.

Best VR games I've played so far are dumb, short games you can play in bursts like this one, at least now in summer if you don't have AC.
Mind that games where the camera move without your "direct" head/body input, like those "traditional" FPS mods, might cause motion/VR sickness, even vehicle driven like ED do when you're flying close to the ground or driving the SRV around. At least for a while until you get used to, brains are weird.

Take a look at House of the Dying Sun, currently on sale, especially if you have a HOTAS.

Porn felt really awkward to me.

I actually have an Oculus Rift + Touch and recently got a chance to work with an HTC Vive very closely. I set up and allowed teenagers to demo one at a community center. Honestly the Oculus is better. In terms of overall weight and feel, the Oculus sits better on your face. The foam breathes easier than what's on the Vive as well. The ONLY thing I liked about the Vive HMD was how I didn't need to have my contact lenses in to clearly see. I need to wear contacts when using the Oculus.

In terms of "better tracking", I think that is just a falsehood. They both have the same exact tracking accuracy. The only real benefit the Vive has over the Oculus for tracking is the sensors don't need to be plugged into your computer. BUT they still need to be plugged into the wall, so either way you have cords running places you probably don't want them.

The touch controllers on the Vive are awful. They're big, they're uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time, and they for some reason designed them so they can go in either hand meaning you don't know which controller is L or R until you put the straps on, put the headset on, and then look at your hands in the game. If you mixed them up, switch places. Or label them.

The touch controllers have a menu key on them that I saw tons of people push on accident in the middle of a game, pausing the action and making them go "What happened!?" It's a very easy button to push on accident, and it happened at least once with every kid that demoed the unit.

The Oculus controllers feel much nicer to use. The triggers are soft and easy to pull, the buttons are placed in locations that make sense. There's no "accidentally" pressing a button that takes you out of the game, you have to very deliberately go out of your way to press any of those menu buttons. They also only go on your hands one way, so there's no confusion in mixing them up.

For the Vive being "the" room-scale HMD I was very underwhelmed.

>They know that any forced membership would backfire on them in a big way.

Just like they knew making a closed platform would too yet it doesn't matter in the long run. People will bitch and then nothing will happen. The truth is the masses don't care and Facebook knows this. They're just waiting for the right moment. Acting like this isn't inevitable is just naive. Facebook didn't pay 2 billion dollars for a VR company just for video games.

There's no way that's true unless maybe you got the new foam. I have both and the Rift foam is way worse than the Vive and the shitty thing is you can't just replace it with velcro-able foam, you have to buy the whole part.

>They both have the same exact tracking accuracy.

In a small space maybe. For fast motions the Vive is still more accurate. There's comparisons for games like Climbey that show this.

You're right about the controllers for the most part but Valve is coming out with the Knuckles soon anyway. The wands are still better for emulating objects. Also I hate the triggers on the Rift, it's just preference I guess.

I've had a Rift since January, and it breathes much better than what the Vive felt like. I personally couldn't stand wearing the Vive for more than 10 or 15 minutes when I was working on setting it up. It felt more like the DK2 felt, honestly.

The thing is, they both have the same exact tracking limitations. When I first heard about the Vive using lighthouse I was thinking that'd be something that could convert an entire living room into a room-scale experience. However you only get about a 5x5 meter area of space, which is literally the same exact thing as what you can get with the Oculus. That's what I get with mine in my room right now, using only two sensors. If you want better accuracy for when you are not facing them then get a 3rd sensor and put it behind the area. There you have it, Vive-like tracking on a much cheaper and better platform.

>>
>>386666666
>>
>>386667873
You do realize they basically both launched at the same pricepoint right? Oculus actually cost more when the Touch controllers first came out. HTC just isn't lowering their price since they can't make up the costs via software like Valve and Ouculus can. HTC is the only one "fucking up" here. Valve will partner with another manufacturer and they honestly don't need to care since Rift owners still use Steam too.
>>
>>386668826

I feel like you have to be a shill because that's a bunch of bull. I have a 4x3 meter space and the Rift sensors don't track it fully like the Lighthouse basestations do. Even Oculus fanboys on /r/Oculus don't make claims like 5x5m even with using 4 sensors.

>I can't read aisle postings in stores until I'm like right in the aisle.
Huh, going to give it a go tonight. Will be nice to just pop off my glasses and throw the headset on for a change.

As for comparisons. I've owned a rift, psvr, and vive. I've since sold the rift and psvr. Kept the vive because out of the lot it was the most comfortable for me and the best experience. I just recently (last week) purchased the deluxe audio/head strap thing as well and holy shit is it crazy good. That is the way the vive should have shipped, sad that it costs you an extra 100 bucks to get those levels of comfy, but fuck i wouldn't use a vive without it now. I never got around to buying a 3rd sensor for my rift, it wouldn't have worked well. My room is too big and the computer running the equipment is in the room next to it. I would have had to run crazy wires to get a rift to go full room scale in this setup, where as the vive is just two simple light houses with power one in each corner. Just my experiences though.
>>
>>386669293
Probably. Even Oculus doesn't recommend 2 since you get occlusion issues. They're obvious even when you have the sensors in a small space.

>>
>>386670415
No, I'm "not sure", I am sure. I am sure that it is a falsehood. The tracking is far from a bitch to set up. You plug shit in. You install the program. You set up the boundaries. It's the exact same setup process as on the Vive. I just did this over the weekend. They are identical in setup.

Listen here dickweed, my point about needing to be plugged in was to point out that you're still going to end up with wires and shit running to places. You're still going to need extension cords, or even power strips going to wherever you decide to mount the sensors. At the very least with USB powered sensors like the Rift you can get some extenders and keep it all nice and tidy. Power cable management depends entirely on the layout of your room and where your outlets are.

I've never had any issues using the gesture recognition on the touch controllers. You stick your finger out, you're sticking your finger out. Maybe you keep having problems with it because you're using it wrong.

Yeah, buttons placed in sensible locations so as to not accidentally press them and triggers that are easier to access and use are definitely not a plus. You're right there friendo.

Superhot, Robo Recall, Rec Room, Echo Arena, Onward, etc

>>386670919
I agree, I think the push for room scale experiences is really silly. Being able to stand up and play something like Superhot is really cool but I can't imagine a full blown AAA game being developed around that concept.
>>
>>386670762
>>386670415
This is a joke. Leap Motion has a tiny FOV and is very unreliable so you can never actually play any real games with it without losing tracking all the time. Touch, Knuckles, and even the Vive wands are much better, even if they don't track as many finger movements.
>>
>>386635734
>now or never

They're emptying stock for a newer improved model which will likely be priced similarly to this sale price. Older fags are used to this cycle with all electronics. Until there's worthwhile software all over the place you might as well stick to something like gear vr until the technology isn't a twitchy buggy trickle of demo experiences with rehashed AAA games sprinkled in. If someone waited this long already they'd be much better off waiting a little longer

VR motion controls are the stuff we dreamed of back when Nintendo were hyping the wiimote. 1:1 tracking with your actual hands, so you can directly interact with things in the game instead of pressing a button.

The thing that's hard for most outsiders to understand is that it makes some very simple actions more involved. From swinging a melee weapon to aiming a gun and manually reloading it. So videos of games like Gorn and Onward look very slow and basic but to players in the game, it's fast and chaotic.

Also if you want cockpit sims, you may be interested in this.

They're cycling out the old stock of SKUs, where the Headset and Controllers are separate boxes. They launched Headset first to try and get a start on the market while working on their Controllers, and if you look at their past statements and media, you can see they've intended to do this for a while.

It gets cheaper for them to produce the same hardware over time. This is why they're went on sale for 400 (to remove old, separate stock). The increased demand was more than they expected for the announced sale, so they're using the new kits to fulfill orders. Once the sale is over, it'll go to its new regular price of 500 USD for the bundle.

There will be no Generation 2 Tier 1 VR headsets until about 2019. Releasing a new, improved piece of hardware in an iterative fashion akin to Cellphones would only harm the adoption of VR, and these companies know it. They're intentionally sticking with the same hardware specs to give developers a steady target for their games, allow costs to come down, and allow cheaper graphical hardware to come out that can handle VR.

It's all about lowering the barrier of entry. They don't want VR to stay something you have to spend an additional 800 bucks on.

On the other hand, Leap Motion doesn't have any tactile thing to hold on to, so it sucks for anything but looking at your hands and gesturing. Even the finger tracking is not terribly accurate so doing things like grabbing objects is very imprecise and when you go the throw objects for example, the timing of when the objects is released from your hand is very imprecise.

I think Knuckles will be much better but it'll still have a few problems with relying on the finger detection even though there is some footage out there making it look good. We need to see how it performs in consumers' hands.

Congrats- super hot VR is fucking amazing. Does alien isolation have any official or fan made VR support? I know you can use something like vorpx but that is honestly pretty terrible and nausea inducing. I tried configuring alien with vorpx for a couple hours and was never able to get it to a tolerable state.

Certainly not the central location because that is limited as fuck and is even harder to hide. I can setup the lighthouses where ever I want as long there's power, which isn't a problem because I know about the black magic called power extension cables.
>>
>>386672019
With Vive there's sensors on the headset and controllers that track the timing of the lasers that the basestations emit and that's how it gathers positional data. The Rift uses cameras to track pulsing LEDs on the controllers and headset.

I've heard people have used them both at the same time without issue, you'd think they'd interfere with each other since they both use IR but I guess they pulse and flash at different rates so it isn't an issue.

>Every outlet in my room that I can use is already fucking occupied. Even if I wanted to use a Vive I wouldn't be able to.

You could make the same argument with the Rift. I had to buy an extra USB 3.0 controller which is a bit more costly than a power strip.
>>
>>386672312
Yeah, but I was wondering about using the Wands (or more particularly, the Knuckles) with a Rift. If the controllers don't connect to the computer directly, then I don't believe they can be used with a Rift. The Rift controllers pair to the headset, iirc, and I think the Vive accessories do too, but I'm not sure.
>>
>>386672184
Not him but I remember back in the DK2 days you could get A:I to run with semi-native support. It didn't do mouselook emulation like VorpX, so it felt natural. Unfortunately I don't think you can get that to work with the CV1. I remember looking into it when I first got it and there wasn't a lot of information out there, so it's possible someone figured it out.
>>
>>386672508
I don't think Vive controllers pair to the headseat, due to the fact that you can turn them on independently.
They probably pair either to their extension box thingy or the lighthouses.

i bought the oculus during the sale and while there have been some neat experiences (robo recall) it still kinda feels like a con to me.

The screen door effect is way worse than anyone let on, its incredibly obvious and telling me "well you're an early adopter" really doesn't make me feel any better about how shitty the screen looks.

I'm certain the vive looks just as bad before anyone hops on valve's dick

Another issue is the headset gets fucking HOT, my pc is cool whenever i do vr shit, the headset on the other hand heats up like a motherfucker. This compounds another problem

>glasses

My glasses barely fit in the fucking thing and it's a pain in the ass to get the headset on there and because of the heat it can fog up my glasses or get the shit smudged which breaks the "illusion" (and I'm using that shit very fuckin liberally) of vr it also contributes to chromatic abberation on most fuckin games which makes shit look blurry as hell, as if the shit resolution wasn't already creating that problem.

VR is just slightly better motion controls. I moved about two weeks after getting VR and I haven't taken the shit out of the box and have no compulsion to do so.

If you're ever thinking about it, don't fucking bother, VR sucks at a hardware level and that's without even addressing the endless trash you're supposed to "play" on it.

>>386678490
Nah it only goes on top. It's not a complete lens replacement. The fresnel lenses kind of have to be that way right now. And before anyone says PSVR did it better, the PSVR actually has more chromatic aberration and less FOV so it's not actually perfect. The DK2 also had more chromatic aberration and other artifacts. In the end they all make mostly equal trade-offs because fresnel has godray/glare artifacts. Whoever says otherwise does not have the best eye for it (and does not understand how optic tech works).

>Anyway the guy sounds as if he just doesnt want to like VR.

I don't like VR because it fucking sucks, dude. If almost all software for your device is the same kind of fucking game that should set off massive alarm bells that the scope of the hardware is limited.

The low resolution of these screens alone are a signifier that this tech, which even at a conceptual level is highly limited, wasn't fucking ready for mass consumption.

Everything I look at in VR looks like shit. If I do nothing but VR for a few days I can stop noticing how shitty everything looks, but when i take off my headset and look at my regular ass screen it comes rushing back to me "all that shit looked like garbage"

>>
>>386680464
I don't know why any of the companies have not figured this out yet. Neither HTC, Oculus, Samsung, or anyone has made a headset good with glasses. Yes the Vive has more room to fit glasses on but it's still ridiculously cumbersome. Yes Gear VR provides a focus adjuster, but it doesn't account for everyone's eyes which can have other special optical considerations.

Instead, maybe someone should make a headset with built in prescription lenses adapters so people don't have to go out and purchase them separately from 3rd party manufacturers.
>>

>you don't know what you're talking about

VR has the exact same limitations that the kinect does. You can't walk forward.

>b-but room scale!
Yeah, you can be resitricted to a couple of feet, instead! Meaning now everything has to be designed around a small cube environment.

Any game where you're rooted in place is going to feel limited, it doesn't matter if you scale up the space to a few feet, eventually you're going to feel artificial barriers, this is limiting.

A game where you run a marathonis not possible in VR

Eyetracking is confirmed by Rift, but I'm hoping for built-in wireless capabilities and more immserive control schemes. Knuckles right now look like they are going to be the best to come out because of finger tracking and the fact you can let the controller go but it will stay on your hand. Clearer screens, lighter headsets, and I wouldn't mind a gun peripheral for the shooting games.
>>
>>386690889
Btw a USB extension cable for one of the sensors is highly recommended so you can place it on the opposite corner of your room like how one sets up the HTC Vive. That's how you get the best tracking setup.

This shit is bananas. Whoever thought to use VR for this is a damn genius.

Just finished playing Lone Echo for a little while. I enabled the continuous motion (yaw, pitch, roll) and it works pretty well. The default snapping was awkward as hell to use.

>if you're hesitant about the lasik
I'm not, I want it regardless.

I dunno, I'm not exactly sure why there couldn't be a diopter dial or something similar. My camera has one and it's great.

There is a mod for Robo Recall that enables locomotion. You get Robo Recall for free when you connect your controllers to your account.

well you fucking are lmao, shouldve waited for next gen dumbass

Welp looks like the general on /g/ died because I was preoccupied for a while and didn't get to bump it. At least it lasted for a solid amount of the day, if it or something like it was on /v/ or /vg/ it would've died a lot quicker.

Any other ideas? I'll be continuing to post daily VR threads on /g/ otherwise.

>but as someone who wears glasses I live day-to-day with having to turn my head to look at things
lol wtf? how about you get proper sized glasses ya fag
>>
>>386699147
Seems like a dumb place to make VR threads desu. No one goes to /g/ for gaming.
>>
>>386699158
I don't mean for stuff just off centre, but for anything close to peripheral vision.
>>
>>386699262
Yeah but unless /v/ and /vg/ slow the down a lot, there's no way I alone can keep a thread bumped reliably for the entire day on the board.
