Depends on the game, server and community then. There has to be a context for these characters if we're going to argue immersion. Are we talking about a normal server where RPing is out of place and people typically give less of a shit or are we talking an RP server where immersion is top priority, where playing a girl character for the sake of being a character might play into a story? Because this just sounds like degenerate behavior from normal server scum. You'd definitely have to have a disability to care about immersion in non-RP servers though.

I find I only pick female characters if I'm not able to create good looking male characters, or if I'm making multiple characters and customization is limited.

In a game like WoW between all the classes my characters are about 60/40 male/female since customization is so limited, but back in the day when City of Heroes was around, I had nearly the same amount of characters but they were all male.
