It's rough in the beginning, but as you gain more party members and abilities it gets easier. Just play smart and know what status-effects do. They're important

The game really shouldn't be that hard.

Perhaps you accidently picked pain mode through dialogue.

Later on you get a shitload of party members through various main and offroad progression.
Try to build a good team with them.
Birdie can Oil your enemies, making them catch insane fire damage
Brad is good for allround bashing, with fire damage, aoe, stuns, and gud crits.
Bo is also a really good addition as team bard.

Make sure you pick up every single empty bottle you see, these can be used for soup or bombs.
Don't be afraid to use items sometimes.

Also, there is a great grinding location near the beginning if you keep sucking ass.
There's a short dark cave in which you keep getting attacked by dark sprites.
These are among the only enemies that respawn forever.
They are very easy, reward quite a bit, and you can sleep close-by.
