As a huge fan of Nier and Drakengard, I was really let down by Automata.
The force romantic plot felt incredibly shoehorned into the ending. The gameplay was better than Nier's, but it was by no means interesting or challenging to play. Nier had better world design and a better soundtrack, and the entire story felt formulaic. While Ending E was a refreshing change of pace, there wasn't really anything else I didn't see coming. It was just hitting generic story beats. The boss battles were lackluster, and the Superboss is just a reskined A2 boss, and no more fun to fight.

Hacking minigame was fun, though. Taro knows how to make shmups.

I didn't hate the game but I agree that there was way too much fourth-wall breaking. It's like they planned to have a real plot but halfway through they gave up.
