It's 13 years when HL2 released. How does it make you feel?
>>
Time for a replay
>>
Indifferent, it does feel like a 13 yo game so there's no feely feels to be had.
>>
It makes me feel a great sense of dread because I am getting much older than I am comfortable with and my life will be reaching its conclusion in a few more of these.
>>
How has no game done the road trip better than HL2? I love that Highway 17 chapter. From the Ravenholm Mine to entering Nova Prospekt is 10/10 material. I want a whole game like that.
>>
>>386619308
Every open world game with driving becomes a road trip when you drive from end of the map to the other.
>>
13 years later and it's still overrated and not as good as the first one or op4.
>>
>>386619516
scale back the edge a bit if you could
>>
>>386617779
HL and HL2 are not great games. HL just ran on a good engine and spawned a lot of good mods and HL2 tried to do the same but failed
>>
>>386619460
Er, yes, that's why I said "better than".
All the little pit-stops where you can find an interesting little combat encounter. The somewhat plain-looking vistas. That beach atmosphere. The great ambience. Hitting the nitro and doing jumps. The bridge! God, the bridge.
>>
>>386619730
God damn that bridge is one of the best things in video games. How did they do it?

>saying a game is overrated is edgy
I never said it was bad I said it wasn't as good as HL1. It really doesn't deserve all the GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME awards it still gets to this day.
>>
>>386620262
If I ask why, will you just post that one video of the kid screaming and nitpicking?
>>
>>386620868
No I'll give you a list of specific things I didn't like and thought HL1 did better.
Again I never said HL2 was bad.

It's the game that made me get a Steam account. Now, I have so many games I bought on sale, that I will never have the time to play. Life and shit. I'm fucking old.

>>
>13 years and its unskippable cutscenes are still widely copied
HL2 was a mistake
>>
>>386633090
Not exactly cutscenes since they rarely took away control from the player.
>>
>>386632749
>combine are the bulk of the game and aren't even close to as strong as grunts
>story heavy instead of story light
>gimped movement speed and no bunnyhopping
>tons of weapons cut leaving a pathetic selection
>no equivalent to most of the cut hl1 enemies like bullsquids, houndeye, agrunts, vortigaunts, snarks, gargs, gonarchs
>new enemies are either variants of existing ones or on-rails "bosses" which can only be killed with rockets which you always have an unlimited supply of
>didn't improve on the formula at all unlike op4 which just took hl1 and added more content
>the entire game had about twice as much content but was scrapped for no reason and the final product was cobbled together from its corpse very quickly to meet the deadline
>forced always online drm for a single player game and is easily the game that popularized that shit and made it acceptable
>>
>>386633154
Yeah, they're unskippable cutscenes which are the worst kinds of cutscenes. They don't take away control but they're not interactive either, your presence is ignored and there's nothing to do but jump around like a retard I guess.

From the interview w Marc Laidlaw

>Do you have any idea whether Half-Life 3 will ever be released and would you be willing to work on this title?

>No idea. And I have no interest in going back. I had ideas for Episode 3. They were all supposed to take the series to a point where I could step away from it and leave it to the next generation. I had hoped for a reset between HL2 and HL3 that was as dramatic as the shift between HL1 and HL2. I honestly don’t know if anyone else shared this goal, but it seemed important to me to give ultimate freedom to whoever inherited the series, with my own personal set of loose ends tied up to my satisfaction. Unfortunately, I was not able to do that. But I never thought as far ahead as HL3, unless you were to say that HL3 and Episode 3 were the same thing. I will say that I expected every installment would end without resolution, forever and ever…there was some rumor going around that Ep3 or HL3 would end Gordon Freeman’s story, and I don’t think that was accurate. My intention was that Ep3 would simply tie up the plot threads that were particular to HL2. But it would still end like HL1 and HL2, with Gordon in an indeterminate space, on hold, waiting for the next game to begin. So one cliffhanger after another.

I really liked HL2, even if just for the sake that the combat/shooting beats the everloving fuck out of HL1.

Biggest problem with HL2 for me was the shitty weapon roster with the only new weapons being and SMG 1.5 and gravity gun
>>
>>386617779

Jesus Christ. I feel sorry for you if you believe this. The soldiers in Half-Life 1 at least try to do something more than strafe awkwardly.
>>
>>386617779
I loved it, and still replay it every now and agian. Ep1 and 2 are a bit meh, but theyre more slices of the same cake. Although more stale.

>playing fetch with d0g and discovering the grav gun
>the first tike you take down a strider
>>
>>386640846
Episode 2 surpasses HL2 in all respects.
>>
>>386640627
I was referring to the stodgy shooting in HL1. Fighting soldiers with anything but the magnum, crossbow, Tau cannon or Gauss gun is a pain. The weapons are much more enjoyable to use in HL2.

But HL1 definitely did have more in terms of the combat scenarios you were placed in and the weapons you had at your disposal. HL2's environments are all kinda samey
>>
>>386641069
Fighting combines with anything but shotgun, magnum and crossbow is a pain in HL2.

Satchel charges are pretty good in HL1 occasionally, and hive hand is actually secretly OP.
>>
>>386640952
It has the best setpiece, but I don't think it's the best overall.
>>
>>386641218
The best setpieces. Not just one setpiece. Any fight involving strider hunters beats pretty much any vanilla HL2 combat encounter.
>>
>>386641212
>Satchel charges are pretty good in HL1 occasionally, and hive hand is actually secretly OP.
this

also the smg is decent compared to HL1 (except for the 3 grenade limit what the fuck were they thinking) and the overwatch rifle is cool. I wish I could say more but I cant because of the puny weapon lineup
>>
>>386641340
Opposing Force's weaponry felt a lot stronger.
>>
>>386641280
Oh shit, yeah the setpiece when the shields come up and the hunters pin you in that house was excellent. That's two great moments in HL2:E2

Still, I think the road trip in HL2 was better. The bridge was good, so was the zombie-infested tunnel, and the lighthouse.

>>386641435
Especially in the multiplayer.
>>
>>386617779
Never played it so I don't give a shit.
>>
>>386640952
Yes, kinda. But at that point I had already played hl2 and ep1, the amount of new shit introduced is smaller, its just more finetuning.
>combat is a bit stale
How about these hunters
>bit linear
How abiut this awesome open ended siege defence
>story is in risk of going nowhere
Here we'll explain half of all mysteries and have big things finally happen
>etc

It's really good at improving the formula, so maybe objectively a better game.

but as an dxperience and in my opinion, I liked hl2 way more
>>
>>386641484
I was dissapiinted the brigde wasnt ACTUALLY a seesaw, just a calculation that shifts the bridge to a different state
>>
>>386641484
The first encounter with hunters is great. The antlion tunnels are overrated. The advisor battle is great. The autogun section is pretty cool. The waste section is pretty okay. The missile silo battle is one of my favorite moments.

There's only a couple of combat encounters in vanilla HL2 I genuinely liked. Revolver battle, a couple of battles on the beach when you're storming the bunkers, the turret battle. The first battle in Lost Coast is brilliant but it's not really HL2.

>>386641598
>It's really good at improving the formula
Yeah, that's what I'm saying, it feels less "WOW CHECK IT OUT WE HAVE PHYSICS" and more "okay let's actually try making a fun combat encounter".

And the physics puzzles were pretty zany. Grenade trampoline made me laugh.

Fun is super relative, so id find it fun to fight against a challenging AI in an FPS that takes cover, calls for backup, flanks, cooks a grenade, throws something to distract, runs away to preserve its life, blindfires without exposing half his body, and doesnt peek constantly to expose his head every 3 seconds, etc.

While others would cry and say its not fun and frustrating cause they are babies that think the Battlefield singleplayer campaigns are fun.

I was in highschool when it was released, after playing hl2 I did not think fps games could get any better I was correct. Half Life 2 is the standard by which all other modern fps games should be judged by. After Crysis 1 the pc lost it's crown as the front runner for fps games.

I'd be pissed too if the only piece of work I did in years in a small music kit for cs go.

It reminds me of why I stopped supporting Valve and lost faith in the gaming industry. Now I just live in pre-2011 days wishing I could go back.

hl1 is worse in a number of ways than hl2
>normal is far too easy but hard is retarded in that it makes every single enemy a bullet sponge. Headcrabs take 3 crowbars for example
>weapons feel worse for the most part
>puzzles are even more simplistic than hl2

you can probably beat the entire series in about 30 hours
definitely worth it

There are people who died today, waiting for
HL3. Last news they got was Valve releasing card game

makes me remember playing it for an hour at a friend's house and wondering what the hype was about
>>
>>386662781
>shotgun that has melee weapon tier range >squirtgun smg that fires exploding pillows
>floaty handgrenades
>RL with no very little aoe that you need to reload each time you fire
only good thing that hl does better with the weapons is that there are more of them (even taking away the gimmicky weapons that you use like 5 times the entire game like the tripmines and snarks) and the satchel

Played it for the first time a couple weeks ago, was pretty solid.

>he doesn't just import the M4A1 to the game and use that instead.
