Is he a better protagonist than Solid Snake?
No.

I don't think so. I like Big Boss as a character, but he's only ever interesting in MG2 and (somewhat) MGSV.

big boss in terms of cuteness

Absolutely not. He's great & all, but no one can touch Solid Snake.

How do you figure? He turns out to be a manipulative world jeopardizing asshole.

He was pretty good for just being a character. 3 did him the best kind of justice that gave us the background info and perspective needed on how he became twisted. 5 was utterly nonsensical as a prequel that we didn't even need and it did absolutely nothing but contradict the previous titles and it felt disconnecting that you're playing as the villain but are rewarded Hero points? Fuck off, should've never been done.
Solid isn't as famous as he is now if not for what he stood for and what he meant to a lot of people, allies and villains alike. The charismatic hero whos gung ho, no nonesense attitude makes his way into absurd situations and regardless of the odds wether it'd be other legendary soldiers or the most advanced war machines ever created, he always comes out on top to prove that the heroic human spirit trumps mechanical machines and twisted/misguided ideologies. Call him a Gary Stu as you please but at the very least, he stands at the top.shout out to splinter cell guy doe. Keep doing what you do.

Fuck no, he's like fuck the world, then I was wrong son-brother, world is better without snakes, return to zero.
Solid just fight for a real world and not giving a fuck about it.
No. He could have been if they left it at Snake Eater.

MG2, not MGS2.
And Big Boss is in MGSV; he's just relegated to the background for the most part.
