Fuck, do I miss limewire and, later, soulseek.

I also miss my taskbar being filled with chats as I blared black metal off my stock media player WITH the visualizer. I remember practically running home (no bus route kek) to chat with my internet gf and then talk eachother to sleep late at night over the phone.

Then one day she sent me a care package with a copy of this shitty sci-fi movie we were obsessed with, a bracelet, and her panties and it was the greatest day of my pathetic early teenager life.

God damn those days felt like they would never end

It's a Halloween horror site that's barely been touched for the past 17 years. The front page got rid of its geocities fire and dripping blood skulls, but the better chunk of the site pages are still in their virgin state. I highly recommend playing their HTML games, and checking out the horror graphics and midis gallery:

What? You're crazy. Traffic to small and unusual sites would be of the lowest priority to any ISP since there'd be no monetary incentive to prioritize them since almost no one actually cares about them.
Instead they'd prioritize the giants that people actually subscribe for giving them cash as well as the business deals that sites would no doubt make to be prioritized.

Don't you see the problem here, already? Single account means that it's infinitely easier to ignore you, now. Everything being a click away also means that everybody can easily infest your communities, including children. The main things I miss are the early web sensibilities. Sites that were self-sufficient and didn't need to call a bunch of shit from 3rd party repositories(that end up tracking you even with other standard protections in place). Standard HTML tags used to quickly and cleanly display sites instead of a bloated cancerfuck of javascript to so much as display an image. And last but not least, the Golden fucking Rule of the internet that has since been lost, "Do not give out any personal information on the internet ever."

The reason the internet sucks now is because everything is fucking centralized. Everybody is seeing the same shit being shared on Facebook, Reddit, Twitter or whatever and then moves on to the next thing. It's not just about the people who spend their time looking for cool shit online and then linking it to their friends. Everybody just sees the next big thing because their favourite feed of choice spoonfed it to them.
"Hey did you see that thing"
"Yes of course I fucking did"
Wow, how riveting. Sharing and discovering on the internet used to be excited and not based on algorithms. Not to mention people can't create their own successful website full of content anymore because everybody just watches YouTube videos instead. Everybody knows that functionally the internet is better, that's how all advancements work, it's just the social aspect of the internet is completely fucked. We're lucky that we can even experience the internet in the age we're in now considering that we're a ballhair away from having government mandated online IDs.

All of the above. I started out playing multiplayer then moved deep into custom games. My favorite was motherfucking Aeon of Strife which eventually spawned the entire MOBA genre. It blows my mind that some rando custom game for the original starcraft spawned a genre with pros making millions of dollars.

Early-mid 2000s was objectively the best time to be on the internet. Everything was so damn comfy. Flash games and stick figure fighting animations were everywhere, and they sucked, but they sucked with charm. You'd log onto a forum with a bunch of people who shared your interests and over time, you'd get to know them as friends.
The internet really became shit around 2012 or so. That's when everything became centralized and hyper-commercialized and any soul that the internet had left went away, when memes became image macros instead of funny internet in-jokes. Sometimes, when I'm feeling particularly nostalgic, I'll log onto once-bustling forums where I used to chat with shittons of internet friends and see them abandoned. There's no way that I can put this feeling other than sad.

But it's always been in the interests of the ISPs to be best buddies with biggest sites. If the service towards these site would be sub par, people wouldn't choose them as their ISP. They're the only sites they would ever care for. The only exceptions would be if they were paid to ignore one of them, or if they had a service that they had a personal investment in. Which many of the biggest ISPs have.

No ISP would prioritize smaller sites.

I did have dial up back in 2004-2007 (it was telkomnet dialup, iirc). It was amazing to browse yahoo games for the first time. Also one of my friend introduced me Worms 4 Mayhem. I did play W4M online for once with some random russian dude. The ping is unbearable. The next year I moved out and there is no internet/dsl/dial up connection next year. My dad brought me 3G modem, and it was blazingly fast. I can watch youtube for the first time (with limited data caps. Shit was expensive af). Then three years later I had DSL connection. Lately, my area has been upgraded to Fiber Internet.

I wish gamespy still alive. I want to play W4M again.
Thanks for reading my blogpost.

I know a few people who moved to Japan around 2008 so right after the internet starting going to shit, and because they lived in a foreign culture during that big shift in culture until now they're like time-capsule human beings. Still saying shit like "z0rz" and "epic fail" without a hint of irony. It doesn't even make me cringe because it's not their fault we became so ironic and terrible.

you are confusing popularity with bandwidth consumption. ISPs love websites and services that are low on bandwidth, so yeah they do love smaller sites. People so easily forgot how netflix single handily raped the web since they used their extremely wasteful streaming instead of the buffered video approach (which they didn't do because it was too easy to copy movies )

The thing I really, really hate about the internet these days is how hostile and apathetic it's become.

Don't get me wrong, hostility doesn't trigger me or anything, I've been on this site (and the internet) for a long time. But you used to actually be able to make long-lasting friends on the internet. Even if you playfully ribbed each other or argued once in a while.

These days, nobody truly gives a shit about anyone else, even their online "friends". Since everything has become so centralized and easily accessible, whenever there's the slightest disagreement between two people, you can just remove them from your life with a single press of the button and immediately find a replacement. You just can't make worthwhile friendships online anymore.

Plus, there aren't really any communities anymore, just crowds of people trapped on corporate-funded websites. There's no sense of community anymore, and basically no moderation. The quality of content has fallen to rock bottom because shitposting or being unfunny isn't punished anymore. In the old days, it'd get you removed from a community or ignored, but nowadays, there's always attention to be found, so you'll always get positive reinforcement of bad or annoying behavior. And, since there's are no communities on the internet anymore, there's no reason to generate content for a community. All content generated on the internet past... 2013? is entirely self-serving and used to bolster one's popularity or ego.

There's no going back. It's lost man. If the republicans don't kill net neutrality when they're in control of the government, the democrats certainly will. The free internet is nearing the end of its lifespan. What comes next is a heavily controlled, restricted playpen similar to satellite/cable TV. Free expression will go extinct.

I don't know man, I'm just really fucking depressed thinking about all this shit.

The trick is to find smaller, more specialized communities to join. A place where people are happy to have someone new to talk to, and who won't run you off because they know new blood is hard to come across.

Dead/old multiplayer games usually have communities like this, so try looking there. You might get unlucky and just run into a bunch of screeching third worlders though.

Any "feed" that came after RSS killed the internet.
Websites were better when the shit that was on the front page of websies was hand-picked by moderators or popularity-based and the rest was found through subscriptions or browsing. Feeds just killed everything.
If your friend retweets something it's because they want the world to see how cool they are for retweeting it, not because they want to personally share a video with you. People were more interesting before feeds and so was the internet.

I've used the internet extensively since at least 2002 or 2003. My parents didn't really know much about it and we were taught how to use it in school so I pretty much had free reign on our family PC. Newgrounds, Runescape, and so on with reckless abandon. In 2009 I discovered Encyclopedia Dramatica and through it Chan culture. I must've been in 9th grade at the time. I browsed /b/ for fun for a while, and came to /v/ about a year later. It happened to be the day the Robot Unicorn Attack mayhem was going down, and I thought /v/ just looked like that all the time. Man, nothing fun like that ever happens anymore.

Look at Scott Kurtz; the guy phoned in the art for years using what was basically a sprite sheet yet had the gall to criticize the art of others in the webcomic community, and was generally an unlikable ass to anyone who didn't coddle him, but he's still going. Not as popular as he used to be, but he doesn't have to be. He's got an entrenched audience that'll lick his stuff up.

Maybe if you fell for the college meme, put yourself into 40k+ dollars of debt for a trash degree. I was a straight A kid until about 16, then I realized I had no chance at going to college without going into severe debt, so I stopped caring. The boomers voted us into this mess over the last 50 years and those absolute fucking dipshits have the nerve to blame us. It's not that hard. And if it gets so bad that I can't get hired anywhere, I'll just start my own business. And if that doesn't work, I'll turn into a leech on society, because if all that fails, I'll definitely turn into a crazy asshole that needs gubmint bucks.

That is true. Most of the people that are relevant or famous did it early on when the net is still young, just like the Guy with the Glasses. Still, I'm glad some webcomic like that Totally Not WoW comic with some gary stu necromancer and gay elf main character is irrelevant by now. You know, that webcomic with the same artstyle of that douchebag or whatever fuck it was.

The first (and only, really) I ever actually joined was the official Nintendo Nsider forums. This was like 2003, so I was 12. Smack dab in the middle of 6th gen console wars. I remember back then, the Nintendo kiddies all hated on PS2 & Xbox Hueg because they pretended M-rated games were automatically shit, but it was truly just fox & grapes. Made a lot of internet friends that I would talk to on MSN Messenger. But I guess we all eventually grew up and grew apart. I miss those guys. Doesn't help that Nintendo shut down the forums and made it a purely tech support forum when the Wii released. I know some fans made an unofficial Nsider 2 forum, but I never joined.

The only other forums I made accounts for are piracy sites that force you to join to see the download links. Obviously, I don't actually speak to anyone.

>I would tell her that sometimes viruses would type that in.
Oh shit, once my mom caught me playing with my dick on the usb camera we had.
There was this game that came with the camera that let you use your hand in the image to hit basket balls around the screen.
Basically it detected contrast and movement to determine where the hand was to colide with the ball.
I got creative and tried to hit the basket ball around with my dick.
I took a blanket and pulled my pants down with the camera under the blanket.
My mom walked into the room and asked me what I was doing and I said nothing.
I panicked hoping she didn't see, we haven't talked about out ever. I think she may have, but I'm not going to ask.
I must have been like 6 or 7.

The funny thing is, porn seems to be much safer than a lot of other things out there.

If it has the word FREE in there, it's a virus
If it's something retarded like wallpapers or screen savers, it's a virus
If it's shit old people care about, like files with "recipes", medical "secrets", etc, it's a virus.

In fact, most viruses and scams are tailor made to target older people, because they tend to be too trusting and computer illiterate.

I'm usually pretty good about avoiding viruses as well, took a few classes on info sec, and only need 2 more classes to get a certification in infosec, but it's pretty easy to fuck up. Was downloading some PS1 isos, and needed to convert a disc image to a .bin format. Downloaded the first thing I found in a hurry, and when I started it I saw a command window open for a brief second.

unplugged that modem super quick and deleted the files before it had a chance to do anything. Ran a virus check as well before getting it back online.

There are bots out there that constantly scrub through the internet looking for new targets. People don't change the factory defaults on their home network devices. It's only getting worse, big companies might as well get the data they need to advertise, people might as well be giving it away.
