Well I really can't argue completely against that either. The segmenting on the chest is actually a feature otherwise exclusive to Mega Man 8's Mega Man design and doesn't match Smash's. Still there's also similarities to the Network games. Sure if the Smash design wasn't as blocky those could be the proportions; but BN had character edges better defined, and limbs were slimmer than X/Classic.
But yeah I can't give an answer of how that got into the collection without negligence, but ascribing a motive is strange period. I just find it hard to think this is a low-key announcement.
