When you ask that, is it because this game jumps out to you as a suffering/dead game?
I have been playing this game all summer nonstop after a year hiatus, and while I agree that the shoddy engine and timer mechanics do hurt the vanilla experience, is it not true that there are a lot of solutions to these in the workshop, therefore reviving the game?
Mods really increase the replay-ability to an infinite degree, and right now the only thing I complain about is the difficulty/unrealistic expectations that Long War 2 can sometimes present. (t. shit-tier commander)
Additionally, I am psyched for the upcoming expansion.
>>386592529
What aspect of the art design do you not like? I think the game can have pretty stunning visuals with the bright lights and more crisp models/textures compared to EU
>>
>>386594381
This.

Timers are fine. There is just enough but not too many of them. Other than that, fags would move like a few feet and just over watch for the entire mission.

Corny shit and the worst framerate i have ever experienced.

besides that, modern xcom is flawed in that there are too few soliders and because of that they are way too valuable. Lose a 1 guy a mission and your fucked. lose 2 a mission and its over. lose a whole squad and its just a slog to doom.

The atmosphere was not nearly as good
Fucking HP creep for enemies instead of bigger numbers or better mechanics
Timers never felt right to me, theyDO take away some control from the player, while I never had problem with it, it never made me think it improved the experience

Overall, the shitty ending convinced me that the game was rushed, hence all the release bugs and somewhat lackluster feel compared to the first game
>>
>>386594842
A good deal of the enemies were designed really well. I liked the sectoids, the human hybrids, the camoflagued human things, the snek, and the heavy infantry aliens.

- but some of the enemies are buttfucking retarded. I hate the exosuit alien that comes back to life EVERY FUCKING TIME. after the first time it's so played out. If you blow it up with explosives, it shouldn't reboot in robot mode, hell if you damaged it heavily enough, it shouldn't reboot, but it does, EVERY SINGLE TIME.

also that floating enemy had no place in this game. Some egyptian looking abomination.

I also hated how they got rid of the swole xcom. They went from NFL players to twinks with faggot accessories.
>>
>>386595197
The atmosphere suffered because of the randomized maps.

Yes, they mean every map is unique, but they are never as interesting as the crafted maps from EU/EW.

Nothing. Meld wasn't enough to make overwatch-crawling shitters trivializing the game move faster, and on classic and Impossible where you were forced to overwatch crawl until you get several functional assaults, you eventually got to a point where you'd have enough meld for one soldier to get mimic skin, and then you're set on meld and scouting forever.

Timers fix this. Sometimes you can go slow and steady (normally in places like remote facilities), but now not only do timers fit the theme of rebels constantly working within the parameters of small windows of opportunity to retaliate against the enemy, they almost make the game more then just move troop, move squad close by troop, everyone overwatch, repeat until enemy patrol bumps into you.

>stealth system
Retard. That is exactly why the timers exist.
Concealment allows you to move forward without the fear of activating pods. It is meant to remove the downtime and tedious overwatch crawl of XCOM2012. It isnt meant to be used for stealthing past every pod to get the objective, which was painfully apparent in early LW2 where it was fucking tedious and boring.
>>
I despised the way the percentage chances worked for one.
Say you have 70% chance of being lightly wounded, 60% for wounded and 50% of gravely wounded. This translates in the game as 50% gravely, 10% wounded and 10% lightly. It makes no fucking sense and your troops are constantly out for weeks on end because a snake briefly stood near them.

This bullshit it why troops in high cover either don't get hit, or die to a critical.

It was okay for the most part vanilla, aside from the avatars of course, but then they started making the DLC's. Nothing. Straight up improvement over Xcom EU/EW in every way except visual design on characters and enemies and the best Xcom/X-com game to date.

There are minor pieces I miss from other games, like the stompy robutts in EW were fun, as was jerking off to the limbless torso-women who piloted them. Losing the tension of X-com is kind of a shame, too, but for actual sitting down and playing a game gameplay none of them have shit on Xcom 2. Really looking forward to the expansion, hoping they don't fuck it up by bolting on extra mechanics and shit. It's not like Xcom 2 was particularly complex but there's a difference between adding depth and adding plate-spinning busywork.

I will say the expansion continues the stupid visual design on characters of Xcom 2 though. Kinda wish there were some graphical mods to tone down the brightly colored Nerf plasma weapons and make the ayys more horrific and put giant physics-enabled tits on the snakes.

is this a good starting point if you're interested in tactical turn based games?
>>
>>386610239
Lotta people get really anal about that. A buddy of mine was completely losing his shit when the game launched and we were playing at the same time, telling me how he reloaded every single mission like 20 times. Then he watched me play one, one of the stealth base assaults, on hardcore on a harder difficulty and didn't even get anyone hit and he calmed down and got gud. I think it's just people too used to overwatch crawling from EW not realizing that you can actually dash and haul ass pretty well while you're still stealthed, especially if you always run into cover, and that you can usually just slip past some patrols and ignore them completely. In a full campaign I only got burned by that once or twice due to unfortunate patrol movement.

Yes, and it has four difficulty settings to work with. Mods can also change and enhance the challenge.

>>
Why would you play nu-XCOM when open X-COM exists and is superior in everyway except graphics?
>>
>>386613737
While the new mission management is cool, they made the combat a bit more tedious. Chance to miss goes up much high in a shorter distance with vanilla, and becomes a near guaranteed miss if they're behind full cover. Breaking said cover is a lot harder as well since they changed it where grenades won't destroy it. To balance it out though, they give everyone a grenade and flashbang by default along with armor that counts as two free damage hits before they start getting actually injured
>>
The game's performance was abysmal at release, I would be surprised if they spent any effort at all on optimizing it. Had a few minor problems with things like art direction, and I still don't understand why they fucked up their display of HP when EU's was just fine. Timers were completely fine though, everyone who complained about them was shit at the game. First wave of DLC was shit as well, but expansion looks solid.
>>
>>386594779
Every time I download this game and find mods, the game updates. I know a lot of them are cosmetic but still I don't even know if the non-cosmetic ones work properly anymore.
>>
>>386592242
Timers aren't strictly bad, since they force you to mix up your tactics a bit. I just didn't like how nearly all the missions were timed. I would have liked a better variety
>>
>>386614298

Did you ever play Legend difficulty? That's the default "longer campaign" option.
>>

>>
>>386614269
That I'm not sure about. Hopefully they'll implement the optimizing and stuff in the base game, too, for the people who don't want WotC but have the others.

>>386614298
Considering how XCom 2 is set up, the only real way to make the base game and the expansions up til WotC longer is making research and autopsies and other things take longer so you have to either do more missions to collect bodies for faster autopsies or just sweat it out and still do more missions. Long War's big problem is that it starts making enemies tougher far sooner so you're facing enemies with 2+ armor and 15 health and jacked-up stats before the second month is over.
>>
>>386614719
No timers is too much. There are mods to make it longer or even prevent the timer from counting down until you are detected, but straight up removing them rewards the old overwatch turtling too much.

>Grenadiers exploitable
>Alpha striking OP as fuck
>Poor optimization

For me the two worst parts were Armor and Evade mechanics.

It's still a good game, but it just doesn't match up to EW, it's mods that save it really. Here's what they did wrong
>Timers forcing you into an alphastrike meta and elimimating any prolonged firefights, which were where all the fun in the game was.

The whole problem with timers is not that they make the game hard, I completed a legendary ironman run with no difficulty mods and was fine with no deaths. It's the problem that it forces your to play the alpha strike meta and completely annihilates long firefights, which isn't fun.

>>386616841
I never got to see what this things abilities were because on my 4 playthroughs of the game I never let them live long enough to shoot me.

>>386620073
Sounds like a clunky fix to me, I doubt it will work well. Besides, aliens dying fast isn't necessarily the problem. They also need to how easy it is to land shots on ayys and how much guaranteed dmg/cover destruction you get early into the game, among a multitude of other things
>>
>>386620397
A pretty clunky fix, ideally if it doesn't pan out a modder will improve it.
>>
>>386592123
Forced timer on 90% of the missions and a metagame that revolved around Grenadiers blowing up cover then mopping up the alien pod with the rest of the soldiers, and then moving on to a psi-team in the later game just because.

They're obnoxious. They can go across the battlefield like stun lancers and instantly take control one of your units. I'm serious, it's actually really fucking annoying just because of the way it looks. This cock sucker flies across a huge distance just to fuck over a unit instantly.
>>
>>386622301
I dunno dude, I never played it. Just giving my observations about the game as it was when it was released, where it went wrong in it's most deciding state.
>>
my only problem was the long ass loading times.

Timers didn't bother me much at all. I only ever ran out of time on a single occasion, resulting in a single soldier being left behind. It just sent me off to go on a rescue mission and get them back.

Nah, timers were fine.

It stopped me overwatching my way to victory and forced me to actually make difficult decisions on what to do.

Xcom 2 actually perfects the feeling of pressure that the first game lacked, which is why I think some EU/EW players don't like it.

Xcom EU/EW was so much easier for a game about fighting back an invasion. If you didn't feel ready for a mission, you can just not commit to it and spend a few months shooting down UFOs and running the odd callout missions. You have time and a means to get resources.

Xcom 2 actually forces you to manage your resources. You'll never have enough time, supplies, staff etc to have everything you want so you have to make value choices on what you spend your time and resources on.

The only thing I don't like is objective based missions where you have to kill all the enemies after completing your objective. There's something more satisfying about bolting to safety under a hail of gunfire than just hanging back and killing everything.
>>
>>386618770
People were frothing at the mouth over the very first picture.
>>
Just wait for the expansion if you hate timers so much.
>>
>>386622464
Really hoping there will be some. Grenadiers get way too strong way too early in vanilla.
I'm not really looking forward to running 2+ of them every mission again.

At least move the free grenades skill further down the tree or something.
>>
>>386592242
The timers were a necessity. Otherwise you could creep up one tile at a time and make the game almost impossible to lose.

Untrue. No one cares about gay mods. Just look at TES mod threads, which are full of furry bara mods. What people didn't like was one fag continually trying to turn every XCOM thread into a fetish thread and continually making multiple threads of his own to talk about his fetish.
>>
The game is designed to be annoying. The further you get, the more bullshit the player discovers. It isn't that bad though, since a lot of situations an be recovered from.

My biggest issue are just the timer missions where you've got like four turns to get across the world, and for some fucking reason there's no transmitters in sight. That's what pisses me off the most right there. I just happened to stroll the wrong way and WOOPS THERE'S NO TRANSMITTERS TOO BAD.
>>
>>386622301

Yes. Class abilities aren't a binary choice. AWC abilities have been revamped and turned into a multichoice option you can purchase.
>>
>>386623225

Game forces player and AI into "alpha strike all enemies to win"; ton of ways it could be fixed, like using turn units instead of 2 actions, or an actual iniative system, even wego with simultaneous shooting phase wouldve worked, but the devs seem braindead when it comes to gameplay design. Maybe in the future they could pick /tg/'s brain for help making thier shit actually work.

Nect to the shitty turn system is the focus on RNG punishment that is completely out of the players hands and makes the gane frustrating. Something like edge rerolls that get burned off to prevent criticals once wouldve done wonders. Getting rid of the class system outright and tying abilities to equipment like the original game wouldve also mitigated the frustration of losing soldiers because it makes them individually more ecpendable while the important gear can still be recovered.

Virtually everything the dev team has done after launch has not actually improved the gameplay whatsoever - in fact the alien rulers dlc fucking obliterates the core design and fun. The devs are fuvking clueless and seriously need to revisit tabletop gaming to see what oeople like and why.

There's your problem, mate. You should've created a thread on the XCOM 2 subreddit and raised awareness of the bug there, everyone would have showered you in upvotes and the community managers at Firaxis would've noticed you.

It was through the officla crash/bug reporting thread they created on the forums in the first week of the launch when everyone was having problems. I found the solution to the memory leak crash that was causing the game to simply not boot for some people after one crash but whatever, if they choose not to fix it is not my issue.

And I was never looking for recognition or up boats so I didn't do that.

>>386594660
if a game is moddable it's definetely part of the game.

trying playing a piece of trash game that is nigh-impossible to modify, barely allowing the simplest of changes and if so, only through brute ways like using a hacked renderer.

If you can safely say that something like singleplayer GTAV would be the same without mods you're a clown.

Most of the enemies in XCOM 2 are just annoying and no fun, the first game's firefights were way more fun and the enemies never felt like they were a chore to kill.

These enemies force you to play a certain way to beat them and anything other than that tactic is just putting yourself at a huge disadvantage.
