Give it another year. As long as they keep updating, I can see it becoming a genuinely fun game.

It's the same grind that it ever was with just more shallow things to grind for/help you grind better. Cars that allow you to traverse greater distances to grind for more materials. Freighters that you can grind to purchase and have more ship slots to fill up that will require more grinding to fill.
They added nothing in the way of new things to see. Just more useless gameplay mechanics to mess around with.
The game needs more events. More scripting. More little stories that happen out in the vastness of space that make you experience feel unique to YOU. And it's clear Hello Games doesn't place priority on that. Instead deciding on creating new mechanics to keep you grinding.

New animal types. That'd be interesting. Aliens or ruins that do more than give you a simple text puzzle to solve. That'd be interesting. Complex underwater cave systems and actually deep oceans. That'd be interesting. New anomalies in space that threaten you and your livelihood in different ways. That'd be interesting. Breaking down the barriers that exist between stars and actually allowing you fly out into deep space. That'd be interesting. ACTUAL FUCKING PLANETARY PHYSICS WITH STARS AND ORBITAL ROTATIONS. That'd be interesting.

As it stands, No Man's Sky remains the most shallow procedurally-generated space exploration title, and will remain so until Hello Games figures they need to start adding things to their algorithms that are worth exploring the unknown for outside of interesting rock formations.

I don't think it's worth buying yet even with the price cuts.
Don't get me wrong, No Man's Sky is not a good nor bad game, it's just really mediocre.
Sean wanted to make his dream game but was naïve in terms to resource management and amount of communication required between the dev team and him, causing him constantly updating the feature scope that the dev team and resources couldn't keep up with Sean. As the game had to be released a lot of corners and features had to be cut and the reaction became the expected when it was released and didn't meet the expectations. the entire development and subsequent release situation looking very similar to Jurassic Park Trespasser development hell and lackluster release.
I personally would have loved to see what his dream game would have ended up as if No Man's Sky had a lot more resources in terms of manpower, money and time.
But the question is if Sean wants to continue with No Man's Sky considering few gamers are willing to take him seriously again.
