Cleve's career just ended.
>>
He just forgot to have the game create a save folder. Just download the last stable patch. Copy this into steam console and drag to grimwah folder.

The idiot should've just released it as an early-access title or released it only to backers as a beta first so that all bugs could be caught, as it's simply statistically improbable for one man to catch all bugs in an autistically intricate game like this.
He dug his own grave by not having large pool of testers.

no it doesn't it just changed save location

Cleve moved the location of save, library and config files to "C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\GRIMOIRE" , but apparently didn't set the game to create that folder.

Top kek. Please don't tell me Cleve is this incompetent. How in the hell does he maintain stable employment as a programmer? Someone is apparently hiring him because his linkedin shows he hasn't gone longer than 2 months without being contracted.
>>
>>386590878
Cleve is basically John K. or George Lucas, but without the talent to warrant the ego.

Basically, without someone sitting over his shoulder to smack him upside the head for being stupid, he'll just end up digging himself deeper and deeper into the grave until he loses all credibility.

Can anyone confirm if this is real? It sounds too good to be true and Cleve claimed it was bullshit, but you never know:

>The story. Here is where the fun is. If I did not know about Cleve's proclivity towards racism, I would not think anything of it except that sometimes the writing is bombastic and over the top...and in other places just plain ludicrous. Overall the writing is not too bad, though. The story focuses rather heavily on the Star Child. The Star Child is the last vestige of the Old Race. As you go through the game, you learn about a great war between the Old Race and the animal-like races that are like half man half dog, etc. Before the Star Child is found, you need to find and prepare an Old Race base and its robotic defenses (til then the game was purely magic based) to fight off the hordes of evil halfhuman races(especially the half gorillas who are the most vile of them all!!!). They don't come out and say halfhuman, but that's basically what it is. Then, you have a bunch of choices, but the 'good' choice is you bring the Star Child back and he will lead the way into a new and glorious future, and will give your characters superhuman Old Race powers by turning them into full humans (again it doesn't say this but this is what's implied).

All of which he written. While his directing isn't the best, and he's made bad movies like Crystal Skull and AotC (Spielberg is coming back to collaborate on the story for the fifth Indiana Jones despite the story being the worst aspect of the Crystal Skull), it's evidenced that he has some writing talent.

I don't think Cleve is particularly talented as evidenced by twenty years and can't competently patch a game, enthusiastic maybe. Cleve at least shows or fronts that he cares about his product, whether that's disdain over Wizardry or genuine affection for what he's made.

Finally caught up with myself in Grimoire, and got past where I got stuck.
Took a few hours. Quicker this time round and started in a better starting place to level quicker.

Just beat ol Mumra (The guardian), The Snek (yeah I did it in that order for some reason this time), and took out the bandit minibosses in the opening areas.

So I have to push onwards through the village now. Much better equipped this time, skillwise and item wise.
(Status effect spells and debuff spells are a must early on. Instruments are pretty OP. Only used them in the mummy boss to make the game a bit fairer since you blitz through MP in this game, even with 4 spellcasters)

Can any melonheads confirm if followers that you recruit end up leaving later? I've been putting off hiring Lil Rosy and the scribe sape for that very reason. I don't want to have to fire any party member I made if the fairy loli will just end up leaving mid way through the game.

Maybe you missed it, but anons advised again and again against buying it. The small minority (prolific samefag) that supports the game blindly should be ridiculed or avoided, never trusted. Their posts are redundant and easy to spot often including:

>Sape (negative)
>Thal (positive)
>Incline
>Blobber
>The spelling "Grimwah"
>Pressuring to purchase of Grimoire
>Contempt for the pirating of Grimoire
>insults, slurs directed to someone named Andrew

They argue poorly as well, when faced with logic they'll adopt a veteran gamer stance and insist their opponent is better suited playing games generally regarded as casual, i.e. "Go back to Skyrim, kid."

Bottom of the barrel shitposts from a rookie angler. Enjoy the thread.

I stumbled through absolute darkness in a maze full of poison traps that kill your whole party in like 3 turns to get some ore which I broke down into magic stones which I used to make a magic bridge which I used to cross a giant chasm and now I'm in some evil place that existed before sunlight apparently.

Also I can't make any new saves. So even though I can play the game theirs no way I can really make it far without the ability to make new saves.

I mean, in a sense, it's like this non-descript fantasy (with very pronounced "power fantasy" overtones), which is all about imagination running wild and unrestricted, and which is sort of supposed (?) to be perceived, you know, on the run, out of the corner of one's eye, without ever stopping and taking a closer look, like a dream. Because the only thing that matters is the impression it makes on on you the first time you see or read it, and not what it is actually "supposed to represent" or "supposed to mean".

And, I mean, yeah, HeXen1 was significantly more grimdork than Grimwah so far, and had significantly less talking, not to mention all the descriptions, but, I dunno, I am definitely starting to pick a very similar vibe from Grimoire.

Hope it will persist.

So guys what do you think is the best race/class combos?

I think Beserker Lizards are pretty good. Maybe not the strongest berserkers, but that Special Ability of spitting bile really does add to a beserker's utility.
Infact I'd argue I use it more than I do actual beserkering.

Warrior Giant's a pretty good starting class too. Big ol' tank at the front. Probably going to make him a metalsmith once I get mulitclasses unlocked.

Vamphyre Necro is a given. Squishy as hell but you obviously keep them in the back out of harms way. That special charm ability is pretty handy too. Usually use the Necro's excellent debuff and status spells and then spam that charm over and over.

The fairy race make good overall spellcasters, (the elemental magic class I'm talking about), fast regen on their magic. But don't really have a whole lot of it for heavier magic. Plus they tire really easily. So bats are basically a plague to them.

I'd say status effects and debuffs are vital in this game since a lot of enemies are very meaty and hit pretty hard.
You need to cover all the bases and fast. Some harder enemies and bosses have very specific weaknesses so you need to have that coverage.

Spellcasters: Wolfin have the highest MP Regen, Aeorb/Vamps/Faeries have 3~5x slower regen than Wolfin, Humans/Drow/Giants have 10+x slower regen than wolfin.

Starter class for most casters doesn't matter. Casters can move between casters with ease.

The only class you can't move into is Metalsmith, so if you want a metalsmith, start with one. No class can ever change into a Metalsmith. Burrower only pretty much.

If you want a Templar to tank, take a Burrower and make him a Cleric, get him to 10 then classchange him. Only Clerics can really change into Templar because Class Change Restrictions. The only race that can start as a Templar is one of the worst races in the game.

Bards or Sages should be used as instrument whores, if you don't want to wait until a wolfin hits 10 to class-change into a sage, Humans despite their abysmal MP regen have fantastic stats for Sages.

SPELL TABLES
All classes in Grimoire learn spells. There are 5 basic spell schools associated with a specific specialist who starts learning that school at level 1, as well as Arcanum/Eldritch spells (which I don't know anything about yet). Each class begins learning from a specific list at a specific level.

Spell interactions with multiclassing: Spells available to learn on level-up are based ONLY on your current class. The list of spells available do not transfer between classes. E.g., if you are a level 10 cleric and multiclass into templar, you do not get spell picks for your first two templar levels, and when you start learning spells from the Cleric list at templar level 3, you only get the spells available that a level 3 templar (level 1 Cleric) would get.

Base caster classes:
WIZARD, CLERIC, NECROMANCER, SAGE, THAUMATURGE: Each learns his own school, starting at level 1.

Other classes:
WARRIOR: Wizard spells at level 9
RANGER: Cleric spells at 3
THIEF: Thaumaturge spells at 6
TEMPLAR: Cleric spells at 3
BERSERKER: Thaumaturge spells at 10
JESTER: Sage and Wizard spells at 3
BARD: Cleric and Wizard spells at 3
METALSMITH: Sage spells at 6
PIRATE: Wizard and Thaumaturge spells at 6
ASSASSIN: Thaumaturge and Necromancer spells at 3

I would hazard a guess and say that working on a game for 20+ years is probably symptomatic of being a perfectionist and he doesn't want people playing earlier, buggy versions. The game does still have some bugs, but it is bound to after 20 years and a solo developer. I experienced more bugs in Bethesda games (that have huge teams of people) on release than I have with Grimoire. I re-downloaded 1.0 through Steam Depot anyway so I could continue my save, wasn't a big deal.

>>
>>386612364
I think the art direction is ok once you get used to it but I can see what you mean. I wouldn't suggest Grimoire as your first one anyway since the learning curve is a bit steep. World of Xeen is a pretty great game that isn't quite as difficult, but still a lot of fun (and a huge game at that). The controls are a little bit dated but you get used to it fast.

Yes. It's probably one of the most newb friendly 90s dungeon crawlers (as well as M&M 3). The art direction is consistent, too. However, if you don't like the look of pic related, you probably should skip Xeen and old Might and Magic games entirely.

No, you just take 10 seconds to copy-paste what's in the first reply and then drag the file Steam downloads into the Grimoire folder. And that's including the time it takes to download the game. I don't see how that is going through a 'ball of hoops.' You are being very silly.

>>386613327
I used Bethesda as an example of a company who releases games with far more bugs than Grimoire, despite having more money, more manpower and using newer game development technologies. You said Bethesda wasn't "self centered" then used RimWorld as a metric of not being self-centered based on their "version rollback" feature on Steam. I told you that Bethesda games also don't include this rollback feature despite their also-notoriously-buggy games and save file corruption, and now your scrambling for "W-W-WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT BETHESDA!?".

>this isn't a bethesda game, this is a game Cleve made.
By this argument, you can go ahead and stop talking about Rimworld then?
>>
>>386613412
>save deleting bug is fucking retarded
there is no bug that deletes saves. the new patch was supposed to relocate the save folder but he forgot to have it create the folder, so you can create the folder yourself and the new patch will work, or redownload an older version of the game and your save files will also still work. I think it'd be easier to just say "fuck it" and tell people their save files are done for rather than go down this very dangerous path, but cleve is being autistic about it. hopefully he doesn't spend too much time trying to find a permanent solution that could be used to actually fix bugs.

People don't defend bethesda and their bugs, so I don't know why you're trying to defend this turd. Not to mention, as you've said, bethesda has many more people working on it. He promised that it was like Wizardry AND Might and Magic. That latter is an important part--I assumed this game would be open world but it is extremely linear and buggy. If Cleve said, "You will find an esoteric quest item and then spend hours backtracking trying to find out what random peasant or door will allow you to finally progress with no documentation or quest journal that will help you in a significant way" then I'd have never bought the motherfucker. That's not even getting into the crafting skills that entire classes are based around (Metalworker) that don't even function.

My sage and bard both have lutes and they lock down enemies with charm and silence no problem. Not to mention with the thistle he can do 40 damage per enemy .

There are lutes later on that do 1k damage per enemy as well. Sage is basically a bard but with less speed because they can use lutes. Speeds allow the bard to use the secondary weapon. Don't give up on them.

That's because you don't need to be an artist or a musician to appreciate fine art and music?

Appreciating programming requires some actual knowledge of it and recognizing how much hard work has actually gone into his game. Spastics see a couple of bugs and go "AAAAAAAAAA WHAT A SHITTY CODER" but fail to realize there is a plethora of code running behind it that is actually working as intended - and that is not easy when your game had began development in the 90's and has to be compatible with modern operating systems and hardware. Your music and art analogies aren't relevant.

>Dude might and magic was just combing the map in a lawn mower pattern unless you are talking about MM6 onward in which case you are retarded.

In Might and Magic 3 and World of Xeen, you could go anywhere at any time as long as you could beat the monsters. Certain dungeons required certain keys obtained from X dungeon, but all that you had to do is look at the fucking name of the key after beating the boss and you'd know that it opens X dungeon. In Grimoire, the maps are tiny and constricted; in order to progress, you need to find some random item like an egg or stone or fork or some shit and hope that you gleaned enough info from one of the NPCs (which aren't saved in a journal) or a random door and then madly click through a cluttered inventory and hope that using a quest item will allow you to progress.

This game is fucking infuriating because I can tell that there is a decent product under all of the bugs and bullshit, but all that it makes me want to do is replay Might and Magic 3, 4, and 5 again since those games did it so right.

The fucking Neanderthal shouldn't have mentioned that it was a spiritual successor to games like Might and Magic then in his various pitches over the years. Because it isn't. If he said it was a buggy, linear shitfest that required you to spend hours upon hours backtracking and studying every inch of the environment in order to progress, I'd have never bothered with the game because some people like to (this is mindblowing to some hardcore gamers) *have fun* while they play a game. Spending an entire day backtracking in order to find out the thief in town piss wanted a spoon in order to give you a dildo that will unlock a door he neglected to tell you about isn't fun. Finally figuring that out on the way to a map that you've backtracked a million times while experiencing 100 CTD on the way there because the game doesn't like a certain animation or too many keys in your inventory isn't fun. That shit is work you aren't getting paid for.

Additionally after this occured the enemy health bar appears bugged in appearance as the left side of the health bar is always empty (around first 20% of health or so...). Doesn't seem to affect the actual health of the monster though and everything is still killable.

Has nothing to do with the age of the game, you move save files in folders that don't need special privileges or that exist for frequent adding/writing like documents or appdata, what the fuck are you talking about

Leaving them in the same folder as the game is an outdated, pointless convention.
>>
>>386626142
Saves and configs are stored in different folders because if you uninstall your game(which removes your whole game folder), your saves will be kept and will be available the next time you install the game.

Of course there are other solutions to this but that's the basic idea why 99% of the developers do it like this.

So if I got it right the crux of the matter is that Steam updater is shit and needs to have everything important outside of the game folder to even work?

Why can't you just set it up so that it updates only new files and not the Save folder inside the game folder?

For example you can set up TortoiseSVN to only update new files like that, for JA2 if you set it up to sync with the 1.13 development server, it doesn't touch any of your .ini files or saves or anything, why the fuck can't you do it with Steam?

anyone who plays this game is a gullible idiot anyway so who gives a fuck

Keeping saves and configuration files across uninstallations unless the users specifies he wants to delete those two is good practice.
I don't even need to explain why unless you're clinically retarded.

You also don't seem to know what emulating means.

They specify it by deleting the save folder. Why can't the save folder be inside the game folder? Just tell me.

Thanks for reminding me why any kind of discussion on /v/ is practically impossible
>>
So I'm just going to play on 1.2.5 and ignore everything Cleve says and does for the next month. I read that encounters were fucked on that version though, is there any encounter setting to make it feel equivalent to what rare should be?

HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT'S REAL
I CANT BELIEVE THIS
>>

Because then the game folder would have to persist across reinstallations (which is bad in itself cause it's essentially an almost empty folder in a place where the user is likely to see it), and installing it in a different folder would make your save and configuration files useless across multiple installations ?

It just makes infinitely more sense to have an installation agnostic location for these kind of files.

It's completely alien to me that you'd want to have any program/game related files outside of the program/game folder, this is why folders and subfolders exist, so that things can be sorted properly.

I guess you just grew up on the "meh it just werks" philosophy of Win7 and above. Do you even remember a world without smartphones?
>>
>>386627882
You do not find random monsters if you start a game in that version, so no loot, no money to buy items, no xp to fight the bosses.
If your game is from a previous version, then no problem,
>>
>>386628037

Slapping everything in the same folder is the definition of "it just werks", anon. Having system-specified locations for these kind of files is good design because it circumvents silly problem like needing elevated privileges for writing in a folder you don't necessarily know the game will have the rights to modify (along with every other reason I gave you across this stupid discussion).

I didn't have a smartphone untill last year and I'm probably older than you.

>silly problem like needing elevated privileges for writing in a folder you don't necessarily know the game will have the rights to modify
If a game doesn't even have the rights to modify its own folder, what does this tell you about the general state of things?
>>
>>386628314

That it was installed by a user that has higher priviledges than the user that is trying to play the game ?

it's not an uncommon situation.

Ah, I see. There seem to be a few too many bugs in the older versions to play through so I suppose I have to wade through his BS. I'm issuing a chargeback and notifying Steam, I'll just pirate for now and re-buy some time in the future when it works(and if this 600 hours thing turns out to be true, which I doubt).

It'd suck for Cleve but I really hope some decrypts his entire game and leaks the source code, can you image the state of his game if it was on Github for a day, it'd be fucking flawless.

1.2.0.9 actually works besides the save overwrite bug, which does not fuck up saves, it just saves the overwrite with the wrong name. It should be a simple variable fix on Cleve's part, but knowing him the fix might fuck up the whole game again
