I like how Sonic games look and sound, but gameplay-wise, I don't feel they offer me enough of an incentive not to just hold-right to win.

First of all, there's too many options while every path looks so similar, so it takes too much memory and attention to remember where I've been and where I haven't. Then, Sonic moves so fast and gets shot around all over the place, that it further compounds that problem.

Sonic vs. Mario strikes me as a quantity vs. quality issue.

The gameplay in 2D Sonic has always been bad. It is shining example of liking something because of nostalgia. It can be satisfying when you memorize every level and are actually able to go fast, but otherwise it is tedious and janky as all fuck.
