Don't take the key as your starting gift.

Everything is vague and unexplanatory to the point of being frustrating. You can easily make terrible, irreversible decisions, or get stuck for hours, no matter your level of diligence. So emotionally prepare yourself for the shame of breaking down and making use of guides and walkthroughs I guess. Only way to make the games palatable.

And then pretend like you hadn't used them and laugh at everyone who had trouble with anything.

It's not that bad, but if you don't really enjoy the game the areas can seem like drudging bullshit. I loved the game and genuinely enjoyed puzzling out what I was supposed to do, but I can see how some people would be pissed off. before you go into the final boss room though, look up what you missed because believe me you missed a lot of secret doors.

I'm working on my first ds2 playthrough. Just got to the king. I only had to look something up once and I felt ashamed for doing it. Before I got into the souls games I watched enb's playthrough of ds1. I was pissed off for doing it after I bought 1 since it pretty much ruined any sense of adventure and accomplishment but it did get me into the series I guess. Besides DSfix, the other priority mod you should consider is Dark Souls Connectivity mod.
Dark Souls has a dogshit netcode, so if you plan in summoning random players to help you, this mod will increase the chances of success by a large margin. You only have to keep the mod open while you play the game so it's as simple as it gets.

This. Doing lots of poise damage is probably the easiest way to play the game for a beginner, and the Zweihander is one of the best weapons in the game thanks to this. Worth getting it as soon as you can.
