The heroine is batshit crazy, and she is hallucinating the events of the entire game. The end fight is unwinnable: You just get swarmed by endless waves of enemies, until you die.

Then she realizes that she's only deluding herself, and that her quest is meaningless. The final boss kills her, but then the boss transforms into her and drops her lover's head, implying that she's let go and moved on.

Games in the NES era had almost no story, or just a very barebones one, they were mostly played for the jump n run gameplay. Those games were also really short once you know how tp play them. Almost no NES game with game overs took much more than maybe 5 hours if you could pull them off perfectly.

Modern games on tje other hand are mostly story or lrvel progression heavy. Imagine losing your save in Witcger 3 or a SoulsBorn game. Now you havr to drudge through the same story again, how fucking interesting. Or mow you have slowly wade your way through the same dungeons again, bevause all your leveks are gone. That's just not fun. It was fun in the old games because even if you got a game over, you didn't lose much than the stages you were on. Sure you habe to go through the same stages now again, but you mostly memorized them, so these stages now don't take you an hout but maybe 10 minutes.

Really story heavy games eben during the NES era featured save systems. Lil' Ninja Brothers comes to mind.

This isn't about feeling proud to have beaten a game, I was defending challenge in games in general and it has nothing to do with pride about having beat it, it has to do with the enjoyment involved in overcoming challenges and learning the gameplay and then being tested and pushed to your limits. While the idea of playing a game as an unreliable narrator is cool, if what you said is true, that is not a good way of doing it. I think lying about the permadeath works with the game and it's unreliable narrator, having the game itself lie to you about mechanics to increase one's paranoia works in this title. I haven't played the game myself so I don't really know how often death happens or the balance of the combat at all but if done well could really up the tension of the player. Problem is that just the words permadeath are enough to set people off, and in a 8-12 hour long linear (I'm assuming all of these things, please correct me if I'm wrong) the idea of having to redo all of the stuff you already have is not very enticing.
