Just finished this. I've only seriously started delving into the franchise this year starting with 15, then 7 and now 10 and it's easily my favourite of the three. The party members were all likeable (minus Rikku), combat system was a lot of fun, story wasn't too convoluted or hard to follow - had a pretty great time with it overall. What do you guys think of this game?
>>
>>386542539
I like it but the game could be loads better.
They also botched the sequels.
>>
>>386542539
X and X-2 are among my favorites, though the writing in both was weak at points.
Worst boss is Yunalesca.
>>
>>386542624
Didn't delve into any of the side activities/quests but I heard some of them were pretty tedious. Are there any other glaring issues you have with it?
And I've heard bad things about X-2. I'll play it some time out of morbid curiosity (bought the PS4 remaster so I may as well) but I don't really see how the story could continue in a way that isn't forced.
>>
Never did the sidequests in the original and actually doing them in the remaster kind of killed the magic. They were pretty boring and now I one shot everything except the super bosses.
>>
>>386542972
She was a pain, but I personally couldn't stand any of the Seymour fights beyond the first one. They just seemed unnecessary. And from what I can tell from my limited experience with the franchise, the writing doesn't seem to be the strongest in any of the games, so I kind of just accepted the occasional cringe inducing moment.
>>
>>386543184
This is why I didn't bother doing them before finishing the game. I might go back and check out some stuff I skipped past, but I didn't want to completely destroy every boss without trying on my first play through.
>>
>>386542539
Fuck, now you got me listening to the Otherworld track.
>>
>>386543061
X-2's only real problem is that it's pretty much impossible to 100% (and get the Perfect ending) without a guide.

Honestly, Spira in general is pretty comfy, not counting Sin destroying shit.
>>
>Jecht ending up in Spira still just doesn't make sense.
>>
>>386545365
The aeons were just playing the long con, man. Send one memory to become Sin then send the memory's son to kill him. It wouldn't work if Sin was just some random dude.

>>
>>386543747

OK what's the first? Fisherman's Horizon?
>>
>>386542539
X is the turning point where FF went to shit though... last playable FF is IX.
>>
>>386545895
Alright, might I ask why you feel as such?
>>
>>386545895
I'll disagree. I'd say X is the last playable one.

It featured the core elements of the franchise, while really refining the Turn-Based combat.

The only thing that it was missing, was an 'overworld' which I think they did a decent job replicating with the world map once you unlocked the airship.

The pre-determined roles, with branching skill trees to expand and develop new roles for characters was a great design, even if it didn't have a traditional level system.
>>
>>386542539
Hey, I only just started getting into FF myself. Started with X and plan to keep going until FFXV, after which I will likely go all the way back to FFVI.

Just got out of Macarena Woods, how far into the game am I? I'd assume halfway.

Really enjoying it so far in spite of dated jank.

>story wasn't too convoluted or hard to follow
That tweest regarding Tidus being a dream was pretty retarded desu, people always shit on the orphanage plot twist but that was just as bad if not worse.
>>386545895
IX is incredibly boring and overrated, there's a good reason nobody gave a shit about it until 10 years after its release.
>>
>>386548360
When I say "wasn't too convoluted", that's the only part of it that tripped me up.
>>
FF8 and FFX are the best Final Fantasy titles.
>>
>>386542539
I've been doing the same thing this year, starting with 7. Feels weird being literally 20 years late to the party, but it's been pretty fun.
Just beat Ruby Weapon last night, think I finished every sidequest/boss and just have Northern Cave left.
>>
i still have to play x-2
>>
>>386548990
All I did was cream all over the instruction manual while watching the opening FMV.

No point in playing, that game is shit.

Unless you're into japanese pop-star simulation games, then it's probably a lot of fun.
>>
>>386548712
7's aged pretty well. Definitely a few questionable choices, but I liked it. Has great atmosphere throughout as well which helps. I see why it's considered a classic and why so many have it as one of their favourites of all time.
>>
>>386549163
It's amazing how much people are still triggered by sexy girls.
The game has many problems but it has nothing to do with the pop star dresses, and it has no pop-star simulation part.
>>
>>386549502
The entire plot is stupid. Rikku finds a sphere with a Tidus look a like in a Bevelle prison, and now she needs to dress up Yuna like a slut, and partner with some weird Squallette, so that they can dress up in different outfits to battle some comic relief bad guy while they chase nothing?

Finished a playthrough after going through it on the ps2 forever ago. i never min/maxed, but i did do a lot of the sphere grid using the monster Tonberry trick in the arena. Then progressed to inside sin and took down S.Omnis in like 5 hits since everyone was doing 15k+ damage.

After barely getting to around 8k damage as a kid, i never thought getting so strong was possible

yeah, I agree.
I think it especially aged well because of how well the "diesel-punk" setting fits with the grungy graphics/artstyle. The low-res backgrounds, the FMVs, the blocky graphics, the enemy design, etc, and they all fit perfectly into what the PS1 was capable of at the time.
>>

>>386549707
X-2 is stupid and the only redeeming quality is its ATB system. Until XIII-2, which has tad better battle sans pokemon system. It also has the same problem that its battle is its only redeeming quality.
>>

>That awkward feel of starting on FFX 16 years later
Feels surreal. I remember playing Planescape: Torment in late '00s, and that still didn't feel too weird.

I guess it's because FF is something so huge by now, so many people "grew out of it" and lately it's been struggling.
>>
>>386543061
The story is absolutely terrible but the gameplay is very good.
>>
>>386553062

>>
>>386545895
They definitely took some steps in X that were clearly in the wrong direction and unfortunately stuck with the series. (corrdior gameply, no overworld, too many long cinematics), but the game was still very solid and enjoyable.

Seeing as how Jecht/Sin knew of DZ, and sought out his own son from DZ to bring to Spira, it makes me wonder what 'greater power' would've been able to seek out Jecht, and start the quest for bringing the Eternal Calm.

the best part is that iirc FFX is also a fucking prequel to FF7

How would this be a good game at all? You already know what happens and all the twists regarding Yevon there's also no villain besides Sin unless they start retconning stuff, faggots like you are the reason why the VII universe got absolutely trashed with all the spin offs.

Someone else said it as well but he wasn't literally a dream as much as a real physical manifestation created from a dream.
>>

>16 years later

I can't believe it's been 16 years. I remember being so fucking hyped about X because it was the first title in a brand new console so much better than than psx and it even had voices and it looked so incredibly good. How the fuck have 16 years gone by already.

>>
>>386555247
World map is probably the most glorified aspect of JRPG. 95% of the time the area is locked due to story reasons so you can't explore shit anyway.
>>
HOW DO I MAKE KIMAHRI VIABLE?
>>
>>386555865
And it is still infinitely better than a literal linear corridor.
>>
>>386555709
Yes it does sound less stupid than a literal dream that doesn't exist.
>>
>>386555750
Which would be a completely unnecessary retcon seeing as Auron, Kinoc nor anyone else ever mention such a guy. It's bad enough that Tidus getting killed by a blitzball bomb is canon, let the base game have what little dignity is left.

>>386555245
Was it ever implied that someone deliberately took Jecht to Spira like Jecht/Sin did with Tidus?
I thought that was simply an accident. Besides, Jecht being in control to such an extent that he could influence Sin's actions was implied to be pretty unique to him as far as I remember. I seriously doubt anybody before Jecht would be able to do the same.

>>386555865
Even if that is true, the illusion, the sense it gave you about the size of the world is simply unmatched compared to the shitty empty corridors we got instead. I wish developers would understand this.
The last JRPG I remember playing that still featured a world map is Tales of Vesperia and it was awesome there. I think FFX would have benefited a lot from world map.

I don't know, Anon. I keep thinking not that much has passed since high school but it's already been over a decade. Partly what makes playing these games so weird.

>>386555594
Why is there a need for a villain? I mean I wouldn't say a full game but an "episode" where you tumble out of Zanarkand with Jecht, join Braska and Auron, make the pilgrimage, fight Yunalesca as Auron and have a final boss against Sin using Braska summoning the Jecht final aeon. I'm surprised no one made a mod when it came out for pc.

>the linearity kept the pacing from slipping
While it's true that can be a problem, and indeed was a problem for FF8, 10 goes too far in the other direction. When I unlock an airship in an FF game, I want to be able to go see what's over that mountain, or on that distant island. If I'm selecting locations I've already been to from a drop down menu, why even bother having the airship?

And when you backtrack across the world (this becomes very apparent when you have to do it more in X-2) and go from trudging through the snow of Mount Gagazet to trekking across the plains via only a single screen transition, it makes the world feel way too small.

Delude yourself however you want. The game being about a pilgrimage doesn't excuse railroading game design in a fucking RPG. There's tons of other games that came before and after this that didn't use the classic overworld and still were much better than FFX could ever be.
BoF4 is an example. Takes no real effort to implement, rewards exploration by triggering conditions in towns and gives the player a fucking choice instead of giving you an entrance, an exist and a chest in the middle of the road.
Nuance? Don't make me fucking laugh, it made a boring game even worse.
>>
>>386555709
Anon it's a summon. Like when you summon any of the aeons, it's literally the same only Tidus looks human and is being perma-summoned (being "dreamed") by one of the fayths in the giant cluster of them.
>>
>>386556329
You don't need world map to get a sense of how big a world is. Vesperia has world map and all, but its world doesn't seem bigger than Spira.

In all honesty, I can't even remember what the fuck I was doing in the world map except running around aimlessly looking for random fight for grinding. Maybe finding that one casino island, but a literal baby could find that thing right away.
>>
>>386556118
No, but we don't get to hear or see that story. All we know is he went missing from DZ, and was found in Spira just like Tidus, to go on the pilgrimage.

To me it doesn't seem like just some random innocent act.
>>
>>386556656
>Why is there a need for a villain?
Why wouldn't there? We already know everything that happens on their pilgrimage, we've already done the same pilgrimage, we know all about the corruption of the church. There is literally nothing that we would gain from such a game except for the scene where Jecht fights the Shoopuf unless they start adding a bunch of retcons like they did with VII. It would quite literally be a walking simulator that I would have zero intention of playing.

Every single FF game told a complete story and anything left unanswered was done so on purpose (usually), these extended universes are cancer and you end up with trash like Genesis in Crisis Core.
>>
>>386556887

>>
>>386557035
Well, the game did state it was one.
True, if they ever wanted to make a prequel and wanted to add more story to make said prequel more interesting, it would be a good idea to expand on it. However, some might feel this is borderline retcon. I personally do not feel this part needs more explanation,
>>
>>386557232

I havent played but I hear it runs fine. They changed the faces of the characters which look a lot worse imo, the font looks horrible, and the music is remastered with orchestra's which is hit or miss with some people. You also get the international version with extra bosses, sidequests, and the expert sphere grid.

So, are you telling me that Ifrit lives in his own world as a succesfull basketball player, has kids and a wife and occasionally gets ripped into another dimension/world/dream/ice cream flavor just so he can smash meteors into monsters?
That's why that shit is retarded. People can moan about orphanages all they want, X has the dumbest shit in the entire franchise.

I replayed the remaster recently with my boyfriend watching and he was really into it. He had only played viii before and told me he didn't understand shit. He gasped when Jecht was revealed to be Sin and shed a tear at the end. It was cute. He has a terrible relationship with his dad daddy issues so maybe that's why he was so into the story.
>>
>>386557526
Changing the faces feels like such an unnecessary move. In my opinion they do not look worse, but they do not look better either. Some people like you even think they are worse. So why change them? They had some extra budget they didn't know where to allocate and went with that?

>>386557564
I have no idea what you just said and why you overcomplicated it just to make it look that bad.
Ifrit is being dreamed by one of the Fayths, and can be summoned as an Aeon.
The interesting part is that an entire city (Dream Zanarkand) is also being dreamed just like Ifrit. And that entire city can be summoned as an Aeon. Dream Zanarkand is perma-summoned as an Aeon. Tidus escapes from that Dream Zanarkand but he is still part of the city. So technically Tidus is an Aeon. That's why he disappears at the end of the game.

You might say it's overcomplicated, I don't think it is and I think it's pretty neat.

Ifrit gets summoned and then dismissed, his fayth goes back to sleeping. Tidus was summoned and kept there, the fayth dreaming since the summoner was keeping Tidus (and all of Zanarkand) constantly summoned. That's why the fayths are so fucking tired and just want it to end. The dream zanarkand isn't an alternate dimension or anything, it's a physical thing in the middle of uncharted ocean. The same way some guy sacrificed himself so he could be a medium for a summoner to summon Ifrit, millions of people sacrificed themselves so Yu Yevon could summon a "dream" zanarkand where he could keep a memory of the city alive at least. Now everyone is completely exhausted and just wants it to end but Yevon lost his mind and is keeping things going forever.

I let him walk on yuna's part of the sphere board. I could enter it after the fight with the spheremorph (because of the Lv.2 Keysphere you get of it) and thus had a healer when yuna wasn't there for hours. I also used black magic spheres to give him some of lulus spells. Because Yuna's sphereboard section has more magic nodes Kimahri outmatched Lulu in regards to damage done. Because Yuna fucked off right before some really good leveling opportunities (sandworms) he was a better white mage than her. So he was basically my go to mage at least til i got the Celestial Weapons.
>>
>>386548712
I'm in the same boat. I just finished 7 without any guides and kinda rushed to the end. All things considering, surprised I was able to avoid spoiling most of the story for as long as this game has been out..
I'm replaying it again with some mods and gonna try to 100% it
>>
FFX is probably my favorite installment. It certainly has my favorite battle system.
I don't like the sphereboard to much desu but it gives leveling up some kind of interactivity.
I think they should have added an overworld map, if they thought it would look to goofy with the realistically proportioned characters they could have done it like Lost Odyssey, an XBox 360 Game where you travel the overworld with a ship.

I'm actually playing FFX at the moment, the hd remaster to be exact.
Last time i played it i was a lot younger and didn't do much more than the main story.
Now i've done all the annoying shit to get the celestial weapons.
Next thing to do is completing the monster arena and then probably getting utterly trashed by the black aeons.

It was traditional turn based with a speed variable, which previously determined how fast your bar filled up, that now determined turn order and how many turns you could take.
I agree with you though, even though normal encounters were really formulaic the combat shone during boss fights and it's really the only FF system I'd consider to be good. XV would go from a 3/10 to a 6/10 if they just copy and pasted X's combat.

It becomes even better the longer you play it, especially when you've got some dickass albhed psyches who have techcopied your sphere shot and start using it against you.

Most common way is to find people in game and then (for me i use a 360 controller) press x to hire them for blitzball, (would be square for a ps controller). You can find a list of some of the best players to recruit on wiki or someshit.

You can also hire people after games sometimes when their contract with their respective teams run out, if they don't buy them again you can put in a bid to contract them.

I wouldn't recommend it
It absolutely shits on the ending of the original game and the character development it had.
The story is garbage and the game will make you cringe because of it's stupid writing,
not to mention how it feels like a joke/fanfiction.

It has a bunch of retarded comedy-relief elements, such as dancing in combat. (and in general, brother acting gay/creepy as fuck)

It's like they wanted to kill everything that made X good other than the world.

All the characters feel like they forgot what they went through in X, their bonds and their strength just vanished in to thin air.
They're not even acting like themselves anymore, except maybe Rikku.

If you do touch it, imagine that it's some fruity happy-go-lucky adventure-gane which was written by some queer with an obsession about Charlie's Angels or something

Dream Tidus is based on Shuyin, so the connection to real Zanarkand is pretty loose and subject to change. There's no reason to think they can't dream him anew, if everything else needs to be remade as well. In Zecht's case, it was only him removed, so it was probably simpler to just keep going without him.

But after Sin's attack, the whole dream Zanarkand was destroyed. If the killed can't be remade, then it will have to remain ruins until the end of the game when the fayth itself is sent.

well we actually don't know how tidus would have turned out if his life followed the same way shuyins did. I think Shuyin is somewhat older than Tidus.
