Going to handhelds didn't kill the series, Sega just had no idea how to handle it. They could have developed another one in the same lines as the original for consoles but they decided to reskin a Shining game and slap the VC name on it instead.

Sega of Japan's fucking stupid. They could've even done what they did later and just released PS3 versions like they do with PS4/Vita games.

They saw the sales of VC1 in America and Europe and didn't give a shit because it didn't happen immediately, and happened elsewhere. They wanted it to sell well there more than anything else, so they pushed it on PSP because it was big at the time.

Then again, considering how the followup to 3 was, IIRC, a mobile phone game, yeah, I think >>386543571 has the right of it. They have no idea what to do with the series, and want to do something now that they see it sold really well on PC for a cheap port job.

I think the story itself is way more interested than the original which just had cliches out the ass and downright bad writing (Isara's death, Faldio's betrayal) for the sake of moving the plot along. None of the villains were very engaging either.

Azure goes a lot more in-depth with the setting and character development and you see every faucet and viewpoint of the story from multiple viewpoints so nothing feels left out. All of the characters contribute to the scenes in some way too and get development outside of the main story as well. It's just that the narrative is presented in an extremely dull manner where you're sitting through 20-30 minutes of cutscenes on a regular basis.

There never were any plans beyond 3 games at most. After 3, the developer team outright said that if there'll ever be another Valkyria game, it'll be something completely different. Because they felt they had done all they wanted with the previous setting and mechanics.

Long cutscenes could be fine - entire games are built as cutscenes these days. But that total lack of animation, the boring easy uninspired musou-light gameplay you're heading towards, the sheer ugly cheapness of everything, it's unpleasant to look at and you do a fuckload of staring at it.

Hell, slap the two of them together and release it that way, I doubt most people would buy VC2 by itself.

Yeah, another thing is the combat. It could have really benefited from a hard mode or just some slight tweaks to make it flow better. They give you a lot of customization options to build your characters and different items and tactics to use, but at the end of the day you don't need half of them because just running up to things and smacking them with basic attacks works fine for 90% of the encounters. If they sped up the pace some and leaned more towards the real-time side battles could have been a lot more engaging.

Azure has a lot of ideas that are actually ok in theory but just handled terribly. Like if they disassociated it with the VC name and fixed the combat a bit it could have easily been a 7/10 or 8/10 game.

That was a steady decline, with Sonic at least, I never got into PM. Valkyria Chronicles 1 was great and then immediately went to shit and just kept getting worse because nips hate when games do better in the west than their home country.

The remaster was just the PC port released on PS4 because Sega of Japan is so ass-backwards they refuse to release their games on PC there. Japanese players were complaining about it when it came out here.

Valkyria Chronicles was the game to jump the shark. It jumped the shark the moment you realized that the only way to get an S rank was to ignore all the enemies in a map and capture the flag as fast as you could - rendering every bit of gameplay, character interaction and strategy irrelevant.

It wasn't even a matter of exploiting it. If you wanted to clear most maps in a reasonable time frame and get a decent ranking, Scouts were your only choice because they were the only class that could make progress across the field without taking 20 years to do so.

1 was an unbalanced mess even without cheesing it. I won't say 2 or 3 perfected the formula, but they at least tried to spice it up by giving classes more variety and uses.

The gameplay itself was pretty good and fairly innovative, though not without problems. The problem was that it ignored the plot from 1 and 2 though that's nothing new in the series since 2 ignored 1's blatant sequel hook and completely changed the setting, lore, tone, gameplay, characterization, plot, and just about everything else. Imagine if you played Resident Evil 1, then 2, then 5 and you're pretty close.

I have no idea. It ruined the game for me the moment I realized that was what they wanted people to do. Before that, I was going through methodically, working out where I wanted my squad, what directions to go, how to set them up, etc, etc, and kept wondering why I was only getting B or C ratings - then found out that S ranks also gave you incredible loot for their levels.

It was more of the other classes not having the same utility as Scouts because they were so goddamn slow. You had to waste turns moving Shock/Snipers/Lancers forward just to keep up with Scouts which ended in maps taking longer overall if you tried to incorporate them into any strategy. So to clear maps quickly you had to rely on Scouts.

2/3 remedied this by buffing old classes and giving them more utility to get around while introducing new classes that could actually keep pace as well so you could actually move forward at a faster pace with things other than Scouts.

The cutscenes in Azure are more long-winded but there's about the same amount of playable stages between the two. Azure has more if you count in the free DLC stages.

The story in Azure is more interesting though, so that might make you tolerate the cutscenes better. Not saying it's a masterpiece but compared to the writing in VC1 there's a lot more to look forward to.

You can't autistically clean up every map of enemy units, yes. But don't act like abusing game mechanics was the only way, because you can S-rank everything with--indeed--strategy and normal gameplay.
