The reason is that they don't know how to do it. If they could, they would have implemented it by now. The PSN was designed as a response to XBL, but Sony didn't have anywhere near the experience with software development or online serves that MS had (plus MS basically re-launched XBL with 360 and the OG version served as a prototype, so the PSN was built on shoddy architecture that is maintained until this day, which is why you can't rename yourself and downloads are slow. They could take what they've learned and re-launch it, but that would require breaking compatibility with everything already on the network.

My first one was shitty so I decided to make a new account about 7 years ago.
Now it's just a single random word.

Yeah I used to browse r9k for like 16 hrs a day when I was younger. Those were dark times. It's funny because I use muteblox as my handle all over the internet and very rarely do people ever say anything or recognize where it's from which kinda baffles me.

I think I'd be okay with my current account if I did have that dumb ass x in front of it.
