Join a faction and beat the shit out of its enemies.

Keep a relatively small but well trained force, try to isolate and attack lords right after they fought hard battles or just join battles fought by lords in your factions, let them do the dying send your forces at the end.

I just started and yeah there's a lot of options...but very few practical ones if you start out poor. Fighting bandits, taking prisoners and recruiting them is a good way to grow your company, but pretty quickly bandits are going to start running from you because they roll in smaller bands. At that point, you may have to start looking for gig work with guildmasters/village elders/nobles, or a war.

While I was kind of overwhelmed at first it's actually not that complicated a game. If you give it an hour or two you should start to see what things you want and need in order to grow your influence and maintain it.

I met some of those and killed them. I'm Khergit so it's easy enough to ride them down, which I can't do very well in riding nations like my own or in Sarranid country. But I've noticed that bandits in other countries are infantry-based and slower.

What is it that makes Sea Raiders good targets?

Depends on the stage. Early in the game keep 20 men and wander around killing bandits, winning tournaments, and forcing the peasants of nation you don't like to give you stuff, mid game ask for a fief and start keeping around 60-100 guys and stick around the King or another noble as they fight wars, and raid and burn villages for cash when the opportunity arises

I've never finished one. It starts off slow, then you briefly reach a point where you can take on other lords with difficulty, then you out level that and nothing can harm you. The actualy enjoyable period is so short relative to the rest.

I've put literally thousands of hours in to M&B though.

I need something new and refreshing. Have any cool or unique mods come out in the last year or so? Already played PoP, which is a masterpiece.

im in a difficult bind i own a majority of khan towns and arab towns but i dont have any lords or castles so i very much have reduced party size compared to other factions. its difficult to keep up but i am managing by allowing enemies to siege and then send out my entire garrison as a fuck all patrol and joining with what men i have. another problem is a lot of my men are mercenaries and are leeching denars i can afford it for now but i don;t know if i can grow anymore

I thought about that but I do want to get more involved in larger wars. It seems like you need a company of 70 or 80, at the very least, to do that independently. So I am looking for ways to skirmish & ransom lords in wartime to fund my slow expansion and put points in leadership. I haven't signed on with anybody but I do fight with the Khan's vassals where it's convenient.

I think my goal for my first game is to see how long I can go and how much I can accomplish without taking orders from anyone or making any pledges. Most of the lords (even a couple lieges) I talk to just want me to shake down their villages, and I say fuck that and fuck them. It doesn't seem like there's much advantage in being a "man of the people" in this game but I'd like to try.

This is the fifth time that the mod fucks itself up and you get everything from rain to impenetrable red fog when you're walking around places or fighting. The character file is pretty much fucked at that point. Also starting out as Evil is true pain.

You shouldn't get involved as a mercenary like how the Lords request you to when at war, that just gets you fucked by much more powerful enemy nobles. Once your renown is high enough after winning a few tournaments you can just go straight to the king and he'll just give you a fiefdom which will pay for a descent sized army as long as it doesn't get looted. Then you can just follow the king into battle when war is declared.

The earliest stages of the game should consist of wandering the world, killing bandits winning tournies, and doing favors for whatever lords you run into.

Thanks. Do you know which countries typically do horse events at tournaments? The Khergit one was all horseback but that's Khergit. My riding is probably my best asset for winning/not dying.

If I remember right the only other place that has a 100% horse based tournament is Praven, and I think maybe Suno, where the tournies consist solely of knights of horseback with a shield and lance. All other tournaments consist of a mixed melee involved infantry, archers, and horse riders, except for Nordic tournaments which are brawls that don't have any horses involved.

I just went full merchant, starting with high INT and trade and invest in property once I have enough to get a weekly stipend on top of trade.
Once I hit around 18 INT with a lot of useful party/leader skills to improve my chances of catching up to and winning against thugs (tactics, wound treatment, path-finding, training) and money making skills(looting, prisoner management, inventory management, trade), after that I just raise my CHA and leadership until I can field around 100 troops and train the majority of them to elite status with a lot of heroes in the mix.

Majority of my party is Rhodok crossbowmen so damn easy to manage against larger number of enemies with proper positioning and hold-fire/fire at will + kiting.

One trick I bumped into by mistake to train my men quicker and raise my honour a little faster without war at the cost of deteriorating relations with one empire is to just find a lord weak enough to attack and let them go then repeat the process with others.
Cheap way to upgrade heroes and my own gear and make money on the side.

Then I just found a rouge lord and took up his cause taking over Yalen and surrounding castles one by one. Thinking of dragging the civil war on until I hit high enough honour and declare myself king with less opposition.
I have been given every single castle and the town so far. The king trusts me, the dumb fuck.

Getting additional skill point with every INT level feels gamebreaking early on.

there are many many ways to gain denars/equipment/xp other than just chasing bandits down.
