Generations because it's easy as heck and uses stages from lots of old games, so you might see one that interests you in particular and you can then pick up that game.

Sonic Heroes is the best game in the series once you get used to the control scheme which admittedly can take some time. Whatever you do, just don't listen to classic fans. The oldest games are overrated as shit.
