DQVI also doesn't get much mention in the west because it is the most unknown game in the series. That excuse doesn't work in Japan however. I'm willing to say the game gets overlooked because aside from Barbara's ending, the characters just don't stand out. They have about as much development as an NPC from Dragon Quest VII. I really like the look of the original trilogy on 3DS but something feels off about the character models as if they're from a RPG-maker game. Apparently they adjusted some difficult parts too which is nice.

I was interested after seeing the art to this game and then the cover and its reputation, but then I saw the actual in-game graphics and just instantly lost all interest. Tales games are chibi enough for me, I just can't stand staring at chibi everything for hours on end. If I want an RPG there's plenty of other offerings that look a lot more pleasing to my senses.

Dragon Quest VIII and IX got the most marketing in the west. So they sold the most copies and have the most fans. But aside from that, Dragon Quest VIII also has some of the best graphics on the PS2 and people are obsessed with the voices. Nostalgia also helps.

I like VII the most. I enjoyed all its little episodic stories and piecing the world together. IX tried to do the same thing but the individual stories just didn't grab me as much and there wasn't that sense of progress and reward from seeing the map in the present slowly expand out and witnessing the aftermath of all the towns you saved years later.

They tend to hop on the hatetrain without realizing the hate came from a different time and not reviews in retrospect.

It got beef from fans of that time because of all the empty promises they made about larger maps, more detail overworld, etc. but it fell short. Compare DQII to DQI now and you can see clearly it made improvements equivalent to say vocations of VI to VII or character/story-driven IV to V yet you won't see people making as much of a fuss.

It's also the only Hero to have no MP and most raw strength in the entire series which is a personal plus in my barbaric taste.

But hey, formulate your own opinion as every main title deserves a playthrough.

Not really. Yuji Horii and the games director both admit that after you get the boat, the game isn't balanced. The SNES remake made it a little easier, but the flow issues remain.

It's still a good game though. Just more difficult than other DQ games. Think of it as what Dragon Quest I would have been with multiple party members.

I can't really be an accurate judge of if it's the best in the series since it's the only one I've played and I'm not even done it, but I like the custom characters, reminds me of EO a bit and I was getting a tad tired of preset heroes like in SMT. Towns vaguely remind me of GS2.

You just get right down to the core of why JRPGs have battle systems.

I'm not trying to diminish your childhood experiences, it was a fun game, and visually nice for its time, but not a great dragon quest: like legend of mana they just created a bunch of small content nodes and arbitrarily tacked them together

Eh I disagree. DQ8 has a lot of great moments but replaying the 3DS you really notice a lot of the flaws. One being how Jessica is pretty much pointless and mostly forgotten strangely enough. Hell Yangus who is mostly just doing it to repay Hero saving him has way more to do story wise in the game than Jessica.

Dragon Quest has always been about minor stories woven into a greater whole. Dragon Quest 7 just takes that idea and flush it out into something giant. Every island has so much depth and hits every note perfectly. It's the ultimate Dragon Quest and a game I wish most people can experience without people shitting on it just because of how long the opening is.

The idea I guess was to get a feeling of calmness in opening world. Where the only trouble is a princess that cares more about adventure than ruling and a normal con artist. The only issue was how bland the puzzles where in the PSX version. Taking those out for the 3DS might have been the best thing for the opening.

From what I've seen on /v/ threads, people like 7 after they played the remake version. Before the remake came out, pretty much everyone disliked it for being too long of a game.

DQ8 is the best shortly followed by 7.

8 is just so atmospheric and has the best overworld of any RPG no question
