the third iteration is my personal favorite.
1 has it's charms, it's definitely more rat like and reminiscent of what it's original designs were meant to be. But 3 is just perfect, kinda stocky, but still scurries around. New pikachu is just bipedal 90% of the time like meowth it's fuckin weird.

I need to play the 3DS games. I'm just so wary of buying a 3DS after how hard I was fucked by buying a DS and missing all those revisions.

The reason he's thin now is because of the anime. At some point, speed and agility became Pikachu's trademark, but it's really hard to animate that when the subject in question is round and stubby. The slimmer, more flexible design allows the animator to grant Pikachu more agile, graceful movements. Because the anime ultimately dictated much of Pikachu's evolution as a character, the games ended up following suit.

In the original series, Pikachu's speed was portrayed primarily by running really fast. Nowadays, Pikachu is more dexterous, utilizing lots of acrobatics and fluid, flexible movements. It spins, contorts, curls, utilizes all its appendages in a variety of manners, basically it uses far more movement options than it ever did back in the 90s.
