Are there any historians or scholars amongst us here to give me the lowfi on Star Citizen

Is it even a game at this point or something more like an idea that can only be appeased with money, the very last I heard of it there was Mark hamill and an FPS involved in a game about starships

It does though. Without publisher overhead and inflated marketing costs, CIG's dollard go four times as far as they would with an EA subsidiary. That's according ro Roberts himself.

Which is why it's an even more hilarious failure. They just ticked $156 million in funding, which essentially means $624 million in purchasing power to produce a broken ~$25,000 Crysis mod.

You can actually tell that the pressure is getting to him in the latest AtV. He keeps frowning, sighing, stammering, and pulling faces as he makes excuses for why a patch he claimed was coming last December still isn't out yet.

The best part is that even if 3.0 delivered everything he originally promised it would, the game would still be a raging dumpster fire.

Let's play hypotheticals for a moment. Let's say that SC releases (God knows when) and it's a great game and everything is peachy.

Surely one of the great joys of a game that Star Citizen wants to be is the progression from lowly nobody to epic space dude. That's what's driven Elite, Freelancer, Privateer, etc.

Not only are they spending bullshit amounts on essentially a promise but they are also skipping what should be one of the whole points of the game.

Take a look at these images of procedurally generated planets and tell me which one was made by:

Different people value different aspects of the game. Some people just want to fly around in a huge capital ship, rather than starting out as some noname fuck in a trainer spacecraft and working their way up to a self-sustaining space-travelling military base with hundreds of NPC crew members to pay.

I think you should have to work your way up, and that subverting this with money is pay2win, but not everyone will want to play the game the same way you or I do.

>>

MY philosophy with Star Citizen has been to wait and see. I have followed development here and there and catch a few ATV's now and then and there is some pretty impressive work being done and I do hope that it releases and is great but to put money in to something like this with changing scope and technology that they haven't even figured out yet is insane.

I'll happily pay the 45 dollars that Star Citizen is supposed to retail at once it's out and confirmed good but 30k on a fucking make believe ship without a game around it?

Wtf son.

I don't think SC is a major scam but I do believe that there is a very real possibility of more woeful mismanagement (you can really take at least 2 years off of dev time they have used before they even got their act together)

And it could spectacularly crash and burn as an unplayable buggy mess that can never bring all the tech required together in a seamless and FUN way.

It's a BIG ask.
>>
>>386507485
IT WAS MY DESTINY TO BE HERE
IN THE BOX
>>
>>386507012
It started as a $500k goal kickstarter. They got way more than that and claim to have decided that rather than just make a $500k game and pocket the other $2 million, they'd use that extra money to make the game bigger. Then they kept getting more money and kept adding more game, until they were neck deep in so much game that they don't know what to do. Then they started putting out "modules" that let you test drive basic mechanics in a miniature map, like flying or shooting, and decided "we've given them a game to play, let's start spending some of that money on ourselves". They bought a $15k espresso machine for the office, a $30k sliding door, Chris Roberts has also been personally buying shit like boats and jet skis.

Then the whales who donated tens of thousands of dollars started pulling their money out, so they added a clause to the ToS saying "NO REFUNDS". They even mark people who ask for or threaten refunds as problem starters in their internal support system. Now their roadmap only says the content they're aiming at for release is 1/10 of what they promised, and they've been at least a year behind schedule for the past 3 years.

Why is it that almost every single kickstarter this happens to falls flat? The only success of this kind that comes to mind is Shovel Knight.
>>
>>386510925
It is even worse than that. They promised those planets more than a year ago. Delay after delay after delay and then they announce that they will scale it back and even then there are delay after delay after delay.

A Star Citizen whale doesn't buy that data because he likes the photons the data itself makes their monitor generate, he buys it because he wants the photons that Chris Roberts told him it would make their monitor generate in the future. The reality of this situation is that their money went into the photons the data currently generate and it's unlikely that the photons they were promised will ever be generated.

it's diminishing returns.
If you buy a cheap coffee machine off ebay it will probably make pretty gritty but passable coffee.
If you buy an expensive coffee machine it will probably make very consistant nice coffee.
If you pay $10,000 for a coffee machine it will probably taste fine but you'll convince yourself it tastes far better because you paid so much.

The real benefits of those machines is pumping out hundreds and thousands of cups with consistency 8 hours or more per day.

The three most important things when making coffee is the coffee itself, then the barista and finally the machine itself.

After a certain threshols of money where you asure the water temperature and spreading is gonna be costant (Mind you its not a hard thing) it becomes a literal scam unless you want quantity, speed or reduce mainteance ( things you only want on a coffee shop, not a fucking office, I assure you not even the 10% of people working there know how to use it properly, much less the steam thing)

These guys paid and overcharge around 8k you damn mongloids

You may be laughing now, but when Admiral Roberts opens the warpgate to our new world, we'll live forever, and you'll be stuck here playing call of duty 25 on your consoles.

Pretty much an economic cartel like always. People talk big about the amount of space turf they control as if it means anything, but they pretty much have all the serious financial sperglords in the game and corner every market.

As someone who was hopeful for this game and nearly spent over a hundred bucks on a ship jpg 2-3 years ago, this is extremely disappointing and I'm glad I didn't buy in before it was ready.
>>
>>386517624
One fucking planet. One god damn star system. I thought the whole appeal of this game was a huge universe? Why else would this even be fun? Are there going to be thousands of ships puttering between a planet and it's moon?
>>
>>386521520
>I thought the whole appeal of this game was a huge universe
Do you really think they can do that with CryEngine 3?
The second they announced the engine i knew this will never live up to the hype. That was like 5 or 6 years ago
>>
>>386521520

That's for Alpha 3.0, not the complete game.

Money cannot buy you talent. You can use it to hire people with talent, sure, but you need talent at the top to steer the ship straight.

Look at Food Fight. It had a budget of $45 million, but it was directed by an idiot and ended up as a dumpster fire. The opposite is also true: A good team with talented leadership can create good products with "impossible" budgets.

You don't know the backstory to the movie? The entire actual movie was lost. They then quickly remade it for as cheap as possible. What you're seeing is some quick rushjob to fill contractual obligations.

>>386521998

No word on an actual release date. I'm sure my great grand-children will enjoy it.

That's true, but this is what the original version looked like:

Somewhat better animation, but it still looks horrible.

How did this game get funded such an extreme amount of money to begin with? I might be projecting since I only found out about the game like 6 months ago, but it doesn't exactly seem mainstream. Is it a small group pledging a lot of money?

Picture the type of kid who played Space Sims in the 90's. Nerdy kid, decent parents, nice PC. That kid grew up, got an engineering degree. He's making good money. He's nostalgic for the space sims of his youth. His hero Chris Roberts comes along, asking for money. They donate. They donate a lot and often. Now they're in Cost Sunk Fallacy mode, and keep spending more to ensure that the project continues.

They're worth what you use them for

Picture the type of kid who played Space Sims in the 90's. Lonely kid, average parents, Old PC that can only play old PC games. That kid grew up, have a depressing life. He's making no money. He's nostalgic for when life was simpler. His hero Chris Roberts comes along, asking for money. They donate. They donate a lot and often. Now they're in Cost Sunk Fallacy mode, and keep spending more to ensure that the project continues.

This is not just for people with money to spare. Everyone and anyone can be affected. I think everyone here knows someone that bought an Iphone even though they are barely getting by or bought a gaming pc even though they can't afford it.

The search for happiness can consume even the most rational person.
