What do critics see in PlayStation games?

This thread is not necessarily bashing on Sony, but I feel like every AAA developers essentially makes the same games nowadays, but why is it that PlayStation games stand out like they do to critics?

And before you shout MOVIES like an autist, understand that you shouldn't call one game a movie while dismissing other games for being cinematic. There's a ton of cinematic games, and some aren't bad for what they are. It's just PlayStation gets the spotlight on them than any other company like EA, Activision, Bungie, Ubisoft etc.

GREATNESS

Sony is at least putting effort into creating video games. They may not be the most unique or have deep gameplay mechanics, but they are attempting to make video games. Xbox pretty much quit, Valve doesn't make games anymore and Nintendo is now jumping onto the Microsoft scheming plan.
Their slate of first party and exclusive to PS4 titles the past 2 years have been some of the greatest games in a long time.
Most people that bash Sony are huehues who can't afford an $1800 console or PC Bros that try to justify not owning the console.

This. My first real 'PlayStation experience'( if you can call it that) was Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, and holy shit was that game fucking delicious when I was playing it with my friend years ago.

The production value was like a Disney movie, the gun play and puzzle solving was fun, the story and characters was beaming with personality, and towards the end of the game I thought I was gonna cry. I had never played a Ratchet and Clank game before this, or any PlayStation game at that, yet everything was so damn magical and I kinda regret skipping out on the PS3 era as a result. I bought a PS4 though and the Ratchet and Clank game on there is pretty amazing.

I dunno, I kinda like some PlayStation games. There not all winners, but there's enough variety I guess.

The original Fat Princess on PS3 and PSP was fucking great, and I loved it. Fat Princess Adventures was Diablo lite. Not bad, but how do we go from a RTS to a dungeon crawler? Plus the art style just wasn't my thing compared the the cel shaded graphics of the original.

They stand out because Sony kinda dose AAA gaming properly and really polish their games. A recent example being Uncharted 4 and it's third party counterpart Tomb Raider. Uncharted 4 looks, plays and has immensely better writing and characters than TR, it's superior because it's done right with high production values, looks insanely, plays better and leaves a much bigger impression when the game is over. Tomb Raider felt like someone needed to renew the IP and push something out so an office couldn't claim it due to lack of use or some shit. Sony AAA is good AAA and AAA done right, that's the difference, they go above and beyond the norm.

I honestly a game with Sully would have been much better. He is one of the best characters in the series but he gets fuck all screen time during the games.

Nadine is just not a good character, not because she is black or whatever other memes she has going for her, but simply because she is not a good at all.

A game with sully is his earlier years or with Drakes brother would have been much cooler.

Think about the average video game """journalist""". Most of them probably grew up pretty nerdy and always felt a bit insecure about their hobby in most social circles. Then all of a sudden they get to the opportunity to finally bump up the medium as being mature and just as acceptable as film or books by reviewing it well while lauding how mature and deep it is. So you overlook the insane ludonarrative dissonance and other problems with Naughty Dog games because it can be a go-to example of how great games are.

Of course, none of it is true and everybody with a brain knows that vidya is the lowest tier of media, but hey, gotta try so you feel better about building your life around kid's toys so other adults won't laugh at you behind your back.

It was pretty good. Shorter than 'A Crack in Time,' but still worth the $30 investment I think. The controls felt the same, say for one nice tweak with the option to use R2 to shoot as well as the circle button for any shooter fans. I always thought the controls for Crack in Time was perfect already but it's the little changes that make a difference.

The gun play is still king with but some weapons admittedly weren't as amazing like in ACiT or even previous 'Future' titles. I feel like the lack of zany weapons like "Fred" the intergalactic spaghetti monster from another dimension was missing, or even those Six Axis weapons, but the Groovitron more than makes up for it. I can't really say the story was all that impressive compared to the previous games. It was okay but not as deep as the before. The world was still beaming with character and personality, but the main characters not so much. It still looks like a Disney movie, just with Dreamworks writing this time around.

But don't get me wrong it still a fantastic game with a variety of game play and puzzle styles that I loved ACiT for. Spaceship battles, Clank puzzles sections, Trespasser mini games, etc. I wish they would've found a way to shoehorn in the jet boots but I found the helipack/thruster pack fine. Ratchet and Clank for PS4 is a nice introduction game for those wanting to get into the series, and has enough humor and some heart to please the fans. #Gadgetron

I more or less agree, I liked Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider okay but both games play a lot worse than Uncharted 4 and really don't live up Uncharted at all.

Good sir, PC is not as expensive as it's made out to be. After factoring in how much cheaper games are, the ability to upgrade without a whole other console, how you don't have to pay to play online, and the fact that there is no next gen or last gen since all games can play on it. Plus, the platform has lots of good games like Arma and Grand Strategies if that's your thing but there's plenty more that's just what I play and know. Initial cost for a PC isn't that expensive either, friend, just depends on how good you want your computer but even then, second hand for a 980 is pretty damn cheap. Best of luck to you if you want to console game but PC gaming isn't expensive.

Believe it or not there are actually experiences somewhere in between open world and cinematic moviegame walking sims. Not everything has to be one or the other. The game still looks amazing but not this good. And honestly sometimes graphical changes, even if seen as downgrades are ultimately the right decision for the game since you actually have to play it but this really just feels like a bullshot.

It has amazing level design, amazing weapon feel, movement, animations, sound design, graphics, it has no stupid forced in perk system that slows the game down (even fucking new-doom had to have that shit) and very well implemented stealth

They're made specifically for plebs and therefore critics, it's about the story first and foremost, videogame reviewers think that story should take center stage, they are easy and simple because game reviewers are retards that can't play for shit, they make sure to spend a lot of money on graphics because reviewers regularly focus on graphics and how "immersive" they are, they make sure to throw in some women and gays to be progressive and you explain everything outright with no subtlety because once again they are idiots and easily lose track of what they are doing if you don't hold their hand.

Setting and story (and graphics) are about the only things I care about. The only thing I want from the mechanics is that they work and facilitate the story / role playing. If I have some desire to focus on combat mechanics or strategy, I'll play something other than an RPG.

Not all games are the same and the quality can fluctuate as well as difficulty. Want hard? Play Bloodborne. Want action/adventure open world weebshit ? Play Gravity Rush. Want linear, cinematic puzzle solving play the Last Guardian. You get the point, there's so much variety in the stuff they put out and sometimes it's great and sometimes it's a miss.

It's been stated before in this thread but I don't think people realize how true it is. Sony actually releases single player games that aren't used in some shitty "games as service" model. Microsoft undervalues and underestimates the appeal of single player experiences. So does EA and the like.

I guarantee that's one of the reasons PS4 is selling like hotcakes and the Xbone is a colossal failure.
