How do I emulate? How does emulation work? Is emulation better than playing the actual game? Why do many emulated games have more glitches than the actual game?
>>
emulation can have stuttering but can render at better quality so I guess it depends on what you want.
>how do I emulate?
it isn't rocket science. but ps2 emulation is kinda trash
>>
If you want to emulate PS2 or Gamecube/Wii games it's as easy as selecting the ISO.
Not sure about other consoles.

In 99% of cases you just run an emulator and mount a rom/iso, PS2 emulation is easily the most broken in the scene right now.
>>

IIRC there is a halfway decent Dreamcast emulator, but Xbox is still fucked for the most part outside of some small build that can kinda run JSRF.

What's with this meme? At least 95% of the PS2 library works on PCSX2, which is more than pretty much any emulator besides Dolphin.

No, because it's never as accurate unless you're pumping your cycle accurate NES/SNES through s-video at 240p to a crt.

Just a heads up, if you install a emulator and fuck up the launch process you may kill your RAM, since they use it to store game data. So unless you know what you are doing don't fuck with them. They are also known to cause SCSI errors.

From Gen 1 to 5 emulation is superior in pretty much every way. Gen 6 to 8 it got tons of issues.
>>
>>386501652

I've been researching the same lately, and while epsxe seems to run most things, it's not the best quality. I found that pcsxr pgxp is really good, if a bit finicky to get started, but the quality is amazing.

Also what's a good N64 emulator. I am using Project 64, and don't know which version. I am trying to play Goldeneye and on PJ64 v 1.6 the skybox's are all broken but otherwise everything else is fine. But on PJ64 v 2.3, the skyboxs work but now bullet tracers and hit decals are all fucked. Are Mupen64 or 1964 worth trying out?

>How do I emulate?
What?
>Is emulation better than playing the actual game?
Subjective but usually emulator ups the internal resolutions adds AA and filters among other things.
>Why do many emulated games have more glitches than the actual game?
The games were created to run on the specific console's hardware. Glitches or bugs on the game means the emulator is having problems "emulating" that specific part.

Your experience with emulating PS2 is actually going to depend on the power of your GPU.

For example, Ape Escape 2 has a shitload of texture issues that I've experienced while playing on Intel HD 4600 Graphics. When I tried again on a GTX 970, I no longer had those issues

Dreamcast emus are pretty dire.

You can use nullDC ( maybe, I have yet to get it working with Win10 ) which hasn't been updated it over 10 years

Or you can use DEMUL which sucks for a whole host of other reasons

I just built my PC the other day and have no idea how things like a Titan X compared to a 1080. Like I have 16gb of RAM, the i7-6700k and the 1080 but I have no idea how that translates to being capable of something like playing games and emulated games.

>How do I emulate?
Download an emulator and ROMs/ISOs although you can use a legit DVD in the case of PS2 and the such
>How does emulation work?
It's a piece of software that mimics a piece of hardware
>Is emulation better than playing the actual game?
Subjective. It does have the advantage of allowing you to render at a higher resolution than the original console was capable of.
>Why do many emulated games have more glitches than the actual game?
Because the vast majority of emulators are just really clever reverse engineering. It's hard to make it completely accurate.

takes all of a couple minutes to download retroarch, download cores, config your controller, put PS1 bioses in the system folder, and start playing
it works great and it's probably the most straightforward way to use mednafen, which is the most accurate PS1 emulator
a lot of people don't like it though because they find the PS3 style menus to be cumbersome
>>

PCSXR and mednafen are considered as the best ones. Both require some setting up however, and mednafen is literally a command-line emulator so a manual is definitely needed. Both emulators support the new PGXP technology that fixes the annoying problem of texture distortion of ps1 games.

No, it doesn't. Even their own comparability page says it doesn't. You can't get rid of the issue all together, only fix some of the missing post-processing effects

>No post-processing
>Status: Active
>Type: Minor
>Description: No post-processing effects are visible.
>Workaround: This has improved in recent v1.5.0 git builds. Go to Config > Video (GS) > Plugin Settings, set Renderer to "OpenGL (Hardware)", set CRC Hack Level to "Partial" and make sure "Blending Unit Accuracy" is set to at least "Basic". For older versions switch to Software mode by setting Renderer to any of the "(Software)" options.

Again, still wrong. There are still numerous post-processing effects missing in the game even when running all of the correct hacks on the correct GPU drivers in the correct hardware mode. There is no current solution because pcsx2 doesn't have all of the ps2s post-processing effects properly emulated yet.

This is an issue from literally 4 years ago.
>>
>>386511057
Key word there is >improved. It's not fixed yet. The issue has ONLY improved and ONLY when using OpenGL and ONLY when on the right Nividia driver (Nividia no longer actively supports OpenGL as everything but emulation has moved onto Vulkan) and ONLY when using the correct hacks.

Pcsx2 has still not properly emulated all of the ps2s post processing effects, many of which are used by MGS3. You just took a wall of text from the developers themselves and interpreted what you want out of it out of some weird ass allegiance.

PCSX2 takes some learning to get the most out of it. First make sure you have a CPU that can handle it well. Go to: cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

and type in your CPU and click on it twice, if it has a singlethread rating of at least 1600 you should be good to play most games fine with PCSX2. If your singlethread rating is around 2000 you can basically max out PCSX2 easily.

You'll need to download PS2 Bios from another website since they're technically illegal to distribute, and then place them in the BIOs folder in your PCSX2 Documents folder.

If you have an NVIDIA GPU use OPENGL in video settings, if you have AMD use DX11. Don't mess with anti-aliasing, just make the internal resolution x3 and games will look as good as they can. Using widescreen hacks is hot or miss depending on the game, I just use native 4:3 in fullscreen. Leave the speedhack setting on default (enabled with both scales on 0 but most boxes checked) and enable 8bit textures if you have a dedicated GPU. If you have crappy integrated graphics just stick to software mode for the most part and don't change resolution and uncheck 8bit textures.

That's pretty much it for the most part. Your GPU doesn't matter as long as you have a decent CPU and play on software mode or hardware mode without a resolution bump. Also some games run like ass in software/hardware mode and vice-versa, press F9 in game to instantly switch between software/hardware mode and it could fix low FPS in games.

>>386514326

>and games will look as good as they can.
4x is where most games start dropping off, but I've seen gains even above that in certain high detail games. Using FXAA is essential too, no matter what resolution you're set at. The provided FXAA shader introduces no blur in PCSX2 and cleans up aliasing quite a bit. Why not force AF?

And you forgot the most important thing; Enable MTVU.
>>
So does PCSX2 1.5.0 devbuild fix MGS2 and MGS3 so that they look decent and can be played from start to finish without insane FPS drops and stutters?
>>
>>386515784
The single thread rating is 2350 so I'm guessing I can max them out easily as you estimated.
>>
>>386500295
How is babby formed?
>>
>>386516409
Yes, MTVU should be checked if you have a quad core (or 2 core with 4 threads?). I never felt like FXAA got any benefit when already down-sampling from a slighter higher resolution at 3x but that's just personal preference. I've never messed around that much with AF because it doesn't bother me at bilinear (forced) which I assume is default. but I can't remember if I changed it to that.

- Ghosthunter is eehh...

- Black is great

- Urban Chaos is fiddly with controls, but great in tone and atmosphere and general gameplay

- REZ is GOAT

- Ace Combat 4 is just great. Didn't play it fully

- God of War 1/2, God Hand, Ico, Devil May Cry 3 SE (PC version is competent with the Style Switcher mod), ZOE 2 Yakuza are practically Essentials

- Shadow of the Colossus and Okami are gifts for gods

- Armored Core 2 is a bit rough, AC3 is great. Little tough though.

- Just stated playing Onimusha. It hits all the right notes.

- Way of the Samurai is just mind blowing at times. But clunky to control, though

- Viewtiful Joe is just sooo fun. Little hard though.

- Cookie and Cream is made by FROM Soft, and it shows.

- Unlike a lot of people, I though Jak & Daxter was okay.

- MGS 3 is great, Tenchu Wraith of Heavens is quite underrated, almost plays like the PS1 Tenchu games, SC Double agent is great though I dunno about the PS3/X360/PC version

- Silent Hill 2 Director's cut, Silent Hill 3, Fatal Frame 2 and Resident Evil 4 are essential. Siren 1/2, Rule of Roses, Haunting Ground, Echo Night Beyond are great, but not without some problems.

- Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is quite complex for a licenced fighting game. Never got good at it.

- SSX 3 is just soo... fun. Also, amazing radio.

- FFX is really nice but not the best, FFXII International is just all kinds of great, KH is not cup of my tea, recently started Shadow Hearts so I can't comment, P3 FES and P4 are just amazing (didn't finish them though)

- SMT Digital Devil Saga is severely overlooked. King's Field 4 is hard is balls but fantastic atmosphere.

- Gran Turismo 4 is not my kind of racing game but it's style and music is top notch, Burnout 3 is nice, not here but NFS Carbon is great as well

- Katamari Damacy is GOAT.

I only emulate Grandia3, Persona 3 and Persona 4 and it works alright so far. When a new version of the emulator gets released there are a few minor problems but nothing major.
Grandia 3 had an annoying sound bug but ran fine otherwise. The Persona games have bugged shadows and the audio has some hick up from time to time. There are FPS drops but they are so rare and don't last longer than maybe a few seconds that I can't really complain.

I will never understand people who claim emulation for a system (generally GC, Wii, & especially PS2) is garbage because sometimes you have to change settings (open a menu a click a few boxes) or possibly change a plugin or two (clicking a few more boxes). Yes, it would be awesome if every game loaded up perfectly by default like with older systems, but that's just not how it is. I don't mind if I have to spend a couple minutes setting up the program if it means I can play a GC or PS2 in 1080, with the internal resolution pumped up to 5x with modern shaders, AA, filtering, and more (especially if you make use of additional plugins/shaders that allow you turn on even more effects than the emulator has by default). I use one shader for PS2 games that lets me add in all kinds of lighting and graphical effects, including cel-shading ANYTHING (looks really great with a lot of anime-inspired art syles).

People are too spoiled. We're now able to play these titles and make them look incredible thanks to modern graphics effects while drastically reducing load times. We can pick up and play at any point of the game thanks to save states. Essentially the entire libraries of the PS2, Gamecube, and even Wii have been given "HD remasters" and in many cases can be made to look and play even better than the remasters that are published and sold.

Yes, work still needs to be done. Not everything is playable perfectly yet, and there are some that just don't work. The emulators aren't perfect. But guess what? It's still fucking awesome as fuck. So you have to click some stuff and spend a couple minutes to get a 15 year old console game looking and playing better ever, and completely free. Enjoy it and quit looking for things to bitch about.
>>
>>386537008

But i am using a sony cable thing that came with the controller.

You still need the drivers from SCP to use BetterDS3 or anything else.

Or just buy a DS4, way more comfy anyway.
>>
>>386536816
Nothing of this matters in the slightest.
Either you're completely ignorant on the matter and you're trying to "sound smart" or you're woefully overthinking it, I can't decide which.

It's an modern i7 from the top range. It's an overkill for regular games, and it's more than enough for emulation. People emulate quite well with i5's that are three generations behind that.
>>
>>386537034

A lot of emulators works the way you say. Nowdays, even a kid could play any SNES game. Even myself as a kid did.

But there are trickier systems. For me, I cannot run N64 nor DC no matter what I do. I really want to play conker, and yried every single combination of options in retroarch/mupen. But it just won't work.

So my guess that everytime someone talks about shitty emu, they are suffering my same fate. It's hard when the only game you wanna emulate won't run at all, even if any kiddo can put Mario 64 or Soul Calibur on his phone
>>
I use a soft modded ps2 and a swap magic utility disc to play burned ps2 games. Sometimes the fmvs don't play properly but beyond that it's a simple way to play ps2 games

>>
>>386537108
Yes. They're tiny, though. You just download them, put them in the directory they need to go in, then select it in your emulator. Sometimes they have a nice GUI, sometimes they come with an INI that you change a couple digits in. Very cool.
>>
>>386537261
So trying to emulate DC is a useless fare that should never be attempted? There's no future or present that can bring such a fate to fruition?
>>
>>386537217
It's a firmware issue if you cant map it on any of those.
>>
>>386537261
Yeah, n64 emulation leaves a lot to be desired. Some games work great, some don't. Apparently it's hard as balls to get to work right. I've really only used it to play Mario Kart, which seemed to work perfectly. When I tried to load up Ocarina, it was weird. That was on an older PC, though. I have a pretty beefy rig now, it might work better.

>>386537431
DC is the only one I haven't ever tried. I've seen videos of DC emulation that looked incredible, so I know it's at least partially possible. My totally uniformed guess would be that it's similar to N64, in that some games work really well and others don't. Honestly, seeing as how DC made use of Windows CE (which is why you're able to play pirated games with no mod chip), I'd think it'd be fairly easy.
>>
>>386502438

>How do i emulate
You get an emulator and rom/iso (and bios sometimes), run the emulator, configure and bob's your uncle
>How does emulation work?
The emulator is mostly a program that translate machine code from other CPUs to your CPU and simulates the video/audio/controller chips.
This CPU translation is made either via interpretation or recompilation, with the first being this big state machine that just obeys instruction per instruction (slow as fuck but PRECISE), and the second being a translator that translates the instructions from the original system to yours (fast but might fail for several reasons).
Also some emulators use the so called HLE techniques, where instead of running a particular code via interpretation/recompilation, it runs a rewritten version of that particular code that is embedded on the emulator itself, with the best example being the Nintendo 64 coprocessor, where the thing is not emulated at all, and instead the emulators just have all the common codes written for it embedded and run those with varying degrees of success.
>Is emulation better than playing the actual game?
Sometimes yes. With the HLE thing i cited you can run the game on a higher resolution than originally planned, or well get the same exact raw picture, but outputted by a sharper screen.
Also some emulators allow you to overclock the emulated CPU and get better end results.
>Why do many emulated games have more glitches than the actual game?
Emulators are made with reverse engineering, which means a guy get a real console, inject code on it, tests all sorts of guesses and if he guessed right the console do what he tried to do, also studying ROMs and seeing where they poke in the hardware.
But as you imagine, this is guesswork and sometimes the guesses are just wrong, or there is something you can't directly test influencing the whole shit.

Also HLE is a very imprecise way to do things, but people still use it due being faster and easier to write.
>>
>>386501743
Its UI is fucking abysmal. You can't even change games without restarting the program.
>>
Built a PC just for emulation up to Dolphin and ended up upgrading just because I enjoyed my PC.
Now I'm building a new PC, mostly for emulation. Plan on getting mass amounts of storage but not really sure what parts I should get. Should I stick with Intel? I was told Ryzen was great but I just don't trust AMD CPUs. I do plan on getting a 1070 but I don't know if the market is still fucked. Would rather wait a bit just so I don't spend an extra hundred bucks. And what about RAM?
Just realized that I'm gonna have to move or redownload my entire archive too. Fun.
>>
>>386544438
