What's even the point of this rating if nobody wants to use it?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

>>
May as well ban the games
>>
It's a soft form of censorship. Technically you're allowed to make an Ao game but you'll be shunned by all
>>
>Ao
>nobody wants to make a game that uses it
>eC
>nobody has figured out how to get a game that's this rating
>>
It's never used because it's exclusively a PC game thing, and NO publisher in their right mind would make a PC exclusive game, especially not in today's climate.
>>
>>386499901

Before the Internet, it was how games got sold in adult bookstores. An AO rating let buyers knew they were getting actual porn not anything softcore.

Or, at least that was the theory. By the time it came around the Internet had made it useless.

My little sister had a dora the explorer PS1 game that was rated eC
>>
>>386500138
I forgot eC even existed
I wonder if someone could make a legitimately fun, non-educational game with that rating. Sounds like a cool challenge.
>>
wtf is the difference between Mature and Adult only? If it's just sex, gore, and extreme violence then shouldn't a lot of games now a days be Adult only
>>
>>386500138

>>nobody has figured out how to get a game that's this rating

Very simple educational games get it. The ones you'd find for sale in a school supply store or in an outlet mall. Nobody who's actually into videogames goes in those places though.

Most games that would be AO would just rather go unrated. Nearly every platform that accepts AO also accepts unrated games, so there are only a few exceptions.

Why is there no Steam for porn games?

how many games have ever had actually an AO-rated hard copy? like a legit AO on the front of a box. this is the only one i can think of.

Some rating level can be considered as deprecated due to various reason. One might probably due to overlapping with other rating level, the other reason probably is because of today's standard and culture change.
People nowadays offended by slightest reason, it probably is impossible to attain EC rating nowadays, even game that feature dots as playable character can be problematic by those people.

>Hatred is legitimately the best actual AO game

I don't count San Andreas as actually AO since it was only rated that way after release due to a fucking mod.
>>
>>386500804
I feel like Hatred's AO is just for marketing, being the only one on Steam and the first to prove that Steam allows it. They could have just left it unrated but that wouldn't get as much attention.
>>
>>386500454

>Intense VIolence

I remember when I was like 10 or 12 years old reading the descriptions made me want a game more, recently MGSV got away with an M rating with the "sexual violence" description, I always wanted a game with that description or with the "realistic violence" one that were never used at least in the games I saw, only described in the ESRB booklet that came with the PS2.

The same thing happened to music with the Tipper sticker, I wanted all those cool nu-metal and rap albums with that label.
>>
You literally just made your own point OP.
>>
>>386500632
Don't think there's many AO games and there's good reason for it.
AO rated games will be put behind the counter, leading into shrinked market, not to mention potential negative reception from media.

They rather censor the content to downgrade it to only M, or probably a bribery or two.
>>
Wait a sec this means >>386500454 adult VNs could be technically sold on Steam if only they were rated by the ESRB
>>
>>386501421
You don't have to be rated to be on Steam anyway. Steam allows AO games, but Hatred is a rare exception where it's because of violence alone. Steam doesn't allow straight up porn games, though there are already some adult VNs. I read once that Gaben wouldn't mind porn games when they're completely confident they can be filtered out for those that don't want to see them.
>>
>>386501421
Extreme violence is A-OK, but i don't think straight porn would get past the bar.
>>
Imagine making an Ao game when the Ao rating didn't exist.
>>
>>386500353
I don't think it's possible. Every EC-rated game I've heard of has been an educational game. If it's non-educational, it's far more likely to get an E rating.

The games that have gotten this rating are universally shit. There isn't a single good Ao game. I will fhgit you irl over this.
>>
>>386502161
>>386500632
Didn't this get an anime?
>>
>>386501421
No dump ass, steam has their own internal rating system and pornographic videogames are not allowed as is. It's ok if you release a patch and advertise it though.
>>
>>386502281
Only because devs withhold themselves specifically to avoid getting an Ao rating
>>
>>386502332
Indeed.
>>
>>386502281
Wasn't Manhunt Ao?
>>
Main issue is that the console makers don't want to be associated with people making AO games and retail stores don't want smut games on their shelves for everyone to see.
even if you could get them to stock said game, and good luck with that, it would be behind the counter and nobody would even know its there for sale.

Visual novels with their sexual content intact would make it to consoles in a heartbeat if this wasn't an issue, but it is and why every console release of them have their adult content cut.

There's seems to be some games with sexual stuff making it onto steam, and while people are getting in a tizzy over it I don't really thinks it's a big issue.
Put filtering in so only accounts with a high enough age set can even see the entries and require a valid credit/debit card anyway so that kids can't just bypass it with a throwaway account and a steam gift card.
>>
>>386502664
It was Mature. The closest Ao rated thing would be "my name is not important..."
>>
>>386502664
>Wasn't Manhunt Ao?

Manhunt 2, the version that was formerly sold digital-only through amazon.com

AO is actually a rating you can get and happens on occasion, but virtually every major retailer swears not to carry any AO games, so if you actually want to make any amount of profit you take shit out until you hit at least M. This is why you never actually see an AO game on the shelf.
>>
>>386502918
Yeah, technically there's nothing stopping a dev or publisher from releasing an AO rated game. But just about all retailers refuse to carry them, and if I'm correct all three console manufacturers refuse to give the okay for licensing of AO games. Hence why Manhunt 2 was released as M rated on Wii and PS2, but you could purchase the AO cut on PC. I think there's something similar with NC-17 rated films; most major chains just refuse to carry them, so you don't see that rating on many films short of obscure art-house ventures that you'd only find in theaters that specialize in those kinds of films.

Yeah age ratings in the U.S. are quite strange they have two "adult" ratings one that allows teenagers with permission of their parents and that doesn't have too many moms and dads humping nude in a bed (R, M) and one that effectively bans the media (NC-17, Ao) while other countries uses more straight forwards rating systems like PEGI
>>
>>386504156
We're still on the imperial measuring system, I think the US is just used to using weird systems for arbitrary reasons.
>>
>>386504546
If you think that's funny, you should know that the US is technically a metric country as far as the NIST is concerned. Our units are based off of metric standards.

>discrimination

That one always made me perplexe. No game is going to be blatantly racist, that would be illegal.
The only time I saw it was on Rune Factory Oceans, because the only black character is a maid.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
