They don't want to open up a proprietary digital storefront on PC, it would be a short term profit plan with lasting consequences, they want to work with Steam instead of compete against them like Windows 10 Store and Microsoft is doing. It is extremely likely Gaben and Sony have already talked about it and discussed options for the future but I can only see Sony embracing PC ig Valve gives them a good publishing deal and after Sony has exhausted their hardware options and thrown everything like backwards compatability and the kitchen sink at the wall. In other words, it's probably probably going to happen but not until at least 2 entire console generations from now.

I'm personally a PC and PS4 gamer but I would want Sony to embrace PC without fragmenting the marketplace further with their own online shop and I expect Valve to give them a helping hand for not choosing to do it. I hope so anyway.

Not in Japan, which is what this conversation is about. The two most successful platforms in Japan are the DS and Gameboy. I have no idea where you are getting the impression that Sony dominates there like its Europe. The N64 (a failure in Japan) still sold more in its day than the PS4 has to this date.
