Best Cold Steel is Azure Sigfried Totally not Crow

I just started Trails in the Sky after beating CS2. When do I get aoe moves? I found a chest on a mainroad off the first town and I got bodied by like 6 of the flying cat fuckers.

Not nearly as early as you do in Cold Steel. You can have access to Aerial as early as Mistwald, but you probably won't be able to have it on everyone until Chapter 1, and you won't really have much choice in your AoE until later in the game. Luckily magic is balanced in such a way that Aerial is all you really need anyway most of the time.

Crafts also tend to be a bit weak in FC, with even S-Crafts frequently being single-target. Many of the latter get upgraded into AoE attacks in later games, though. Estelle's is single-target for the entire trilogy.
