It was hyperbole to call it the best, but it's really good and people should try it.

can anyone recommend a setup to play Rondo of blood on emulator? I can't figure out how to get it to play at all. On Windows and Mac.
>>
>>386491357
Retroarch and Mednafen are very picky about the version you choose.

Grab the version from archive.org and grab the BIOS pack from the Gametech wiki.

Pretty sure on macOS, you can just grab the BIOS and run it through openEMU without many issues.
>>
>>386491519.

argg i need to make a mac mini computer OpenEMU is the best emulator platform I have seen and i have used it since it was first released on my macbookpro but on my game desktop that is hooked to my home theater and 4k tv I have yet to find anything as simple and clean to use.

>>
>>386491721
Yeah, OpenEMU is legit pretty good. I like Retroarch better, but I don't mind fucking with shit to get it right. OpenEMU is pretty much just EZ street the whole way.

As far as the best way to play Rondo on a PC, it's probably RetroArch with the beetle-pce-fast core.

Download and install RetroArch, then extract this stuff into the it's "System" folder

http://www.mediafire.com/file/7d5tbargr0iq2x8/RetroArch+BIOS.zip

Then make sure you have a good dump of Rondo, there's a lot of shitty ones out there.

The one from this set plays well with with Retroarch and Mednafen.

Dawn of Sorrow is a direct sequel, so that's the obvious next choice. But really, any of the games on the DS/GBA are a great next choice, just play what looks most interesting to you.
>>

If you liked Aria, Dawn of Sorrow is actually really good, but get the patches that get rid of the shitty portraits and the touchscreen gimmick.

CV4 is the best imo, the only thing really missing for me was a more challenging final boss. I remember my first time playing I was waiting to see what Drac's final phase would be but then you kill him without breaking a sweat and the game's over. I guess they either figured the boss rush at the end was enough or they wanted to keep it simple and just have dracula be dracula

The luck stat is virtually useless for soul collecting in DoS, but the big problem is that the game's RNG is poorly implemented/programmed. This can cause already rare souls to potentially take even longer to drop.

Probably this, but didn't you respawn right outside Dracula when dying? Plus, there is a max hearts and sub-weapon multipliers right below the stairs, so you're guaranteed to come fully prepared once you figure that out.
Gaibon was more of a threat than Dracula.

Same here, man. First time through it was just for meme status, but consecutive playthroughs are really enjoyable. The overly cryptic bullshit and downright lies that the NPCs tell you go from frustrating to hilarious once you know where to go.
The game is actually really fucking easy and barely punish you for mistakes. You have infinite lives and continues for one, and no matter what, you always start right about where you died, so there is never really any tension to anything. Sure, you'll lose your hearts if you game over, but it doesn't take long to get them back.
Hell, I didn't even know you could actually gain levels in it for the longest time, nor did I know it had multiple endings.
>>
>>386498293
It can be modded out.

and this to get rid of the portraits if you are so inclined

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3356/

They do work together, but I did Portrait Hack first then no touch if it's sensitive to order.
>>
>>386498703
Harmony of Dissonance is worse. It's just a poor copy of SotN with worse content.
>>
>>386497540
Slogra was honestly harder than Dracula.

And while I wouldn't call 4 the best, its right up there for sure
>>
>>386498293
DoS had a gimmick where you would be prompted to "draw" a simplistic seal (usually just several straight lines) to actually kill bosses for good once you depleted their health. These were really simple though and largely weren't a problem to execute on actual hardware, save for the last two which could be tricky. I'd imagine the last seals are pure hell if emulated and using a mouse.

The touch screen did have some novel and unobtrusive use in directing familiars, though. I liked that.
>>
>>386498962
not that guy, but I prefer HoD over SotN because of how piss-easy SotN is, there's a point where it detracts too much from the game for me
>>
>>386489423
>>386489590
Won't argue with that.
Surprisingly only Rondo of Blood can even compete.

Don't know why people like Super Castlevania 4. Controls are too sloppy and level design suffers.
>>
>>386498493
>>386499005
You forget to mention the ice blocks, which you had to clear using the stylus. This was a pain in the ass and made platforming a hassle when they were around.
I'm pretty sure there was some more use of the touchscreen, but I can't remember.
>>
>>386496897
>>386497094
It is the resolution, mostly. The animu portraits look bad when blown up too. I imagine it would look better in window mode at native or on an actual DS, but I've lost my flash card and have big beefy hands that make playing action games on DS uncomfortable, so meh.

>SOTN
When this came out I was about 16 and I could not stop playing the fucker. Amazing game. Tons of variety with all the weapons/magic/rings and what not. Also really loved that they added RPG like leveling. Has been done to death since, but still great. My 2 favorites.
>>
>>386499425
Of course it's not the same, though it will be quite close once extremely high res displays are the norm. It's still several magnitudes more accurate. Any dev or artist from the era finds retro with sharp pixels on modern displays to be insulting and ruins their vision/hard work.

What's wrong with the controls? They're standard platforming. If anything, the controls are really tight and responsive, but the game is generally a bit easy.
>and level design suffers
There are a few levels that don't really sit right with me. The cave is one for example. It lacks the direction of other levels, but exploration is kind of a bother because Simon's so slow and everything is tucked away in corners. It's just not worth it.
Also, this level is a real shitter. Hate everything about it.

That's really strange. When I play SotN on my CRT, I think it automatically stretches to 16:9 and letterboxes it, despite being a 4:3 screen. It's really annoying, but I don't know how to fix it.
Might be in the wrong input though. I'm using a PS2, by the way, so that may have to do with it.

Actually, the NES version didn't simply just up the damage on later stages. Several bosses were updated to be trickier (mummies, twin dragons), Dracula's final form isn't so inept anymore, there are new enemy placements in places that were just boring before (the pendulums before dracula's keep), and the second quest actually changes certain enemies into exclusive new variants (spear knights are faster and actually attack, medusa heads are replaced with skulls that Bob unpredictably).

It's harder but I'd argue that the western version is the most complete and polished one.

It had Dracula plus Super Dracula In A Speedo, ontop of various platforms of different elevations with bottomless pit between them. Knockback deaths aplenty, combined with the fact that if you don't know where Dracula was off-camera (another problem with the fight), it was entirely possible his platform elevation could catch you off-guard and thus be at a bad dodging opportunity.

Naturally, his second form has an almost screen-wide attack that can only be dodged in a very specific fashion or else you take a hit and/or die.

I think you just move too fast for the size of the screen, you end up not being able to spot enemies on time. Typical issues with sidescrollers on portables.
It doesn't help that your available speeds are either "sanic" or "slow as fuck".
Cool game that set itself apart from all of the other games that take after SotN, but still unpolished in a lot of places.

Objectively I want to say yes, but I keep having issues with staircases and little annoyances that leave me a little irritated whenever I play it compared to CV I and Sharp X68000/Chronicles.

CV III really improved the graphics, had an excellent OST ("Pressure" aside), kept and improved upon the great gameplay, and the multiple routes and unique additional characters still puts it atop the rest of the series to this day.

I swear that the Wii VC version doubles up flying enemies on the side of the screen more, and makes the water raise at a swifter speed in the Sunken City. Also, one thing I know it does for sure is alter Dracula's final phase's attack so it's a shotgun wave of death instead of one beam. If you're on a platform above the height of his hands his you are in severe danger.

Prioritize not getting hit by him over landing hits on him. Do not swing the whip unless you're already out of harm's way.

Also, beware his tele-frags. Try to walk in one direction for a while after Dracula teleports then turn around and walk far in the other direction. Dracula will also sometimes appear in places where the back of his sprite will try to hit you, including with sprite flips, so be wary of that.

For phase two, a little-known trick is that if an enemy is stunned by Holy Water, it loses its "damage on contact" ability.

I would like to see a 2D Classicvania with multiplayer. You could give the players a very short dash. You'd have to make whipping pretty delayed though and add some sort of light/strong attacks for it to work well. But, it could be a lot of fun for a simple styled pvp mode.

No one knows about Chronicles. It's so under the radar. Damn shame. Even if people knew about it, the difficulty is a turn-off. To beat Chronicles you need to be a CV master, imo. CV3 is already too much for most, but people will usually give it an honest go because it's one of the most popular ones, and because the TV show.

I'll even add to this and say the devs putting enemies within easy reach of the game's new whip options was pretty obviously intentional. They're going to want that shit to have a use and are going to encourage players to keep it in mind. It doesn't do anything to make the game harder, but CV4 is already a notably easier game compared to the classics in many ways beyond just whipping.

That's my favorite phase 2 of Dracula in the series. It's too bad that he's so heavily stunlocked and his whole body is a target. If you attack his head only and have a single Holy Water it's a really thrilling fight. The dude's very aggressive and that laser jump just nukes the stage.

They wind up close enough, for varying reasons, for me to put them together. Rondo works better visually and has a more consistent soundtrack, but I do not like the anime art and cutscenes at all. DXC also has that awesome new drac form, two new bosses, and an actually finished Stage 5'.

Please, it had some of the best aesthetics and music of any castlevania game. Not to mention how you work your way to the castle itself through varied level design. Sure it was somewhat easy, and the bosses were kinda lame, but so is SotN difficulty-wise, and like it, doesn't change the fact that it's one of the best castlevanias.

At the actual rising water segment, there are ridiculously fast-spawning bats randomly coming in from both sides. You don't stand a chance at all without Alucard's bat flight, and that probably won't be enough either.

Any place that had Medusa heads. They're all skulls now. It may go without saying, but you do not want to go to the clock tower unless you know exactly what you're doing.

Oh and you know Bone Towers? Those stationary dragon head enemies that shoot out sets of fireballs? In hard mode they can randomly defy their cool down period and just start firing again right after. This can make certain staircases quite a bit trickier.

Rondo of blood, bloodlines, sign, aria of sorrow, dawn of sorrow, harmony of dissonance, rebirth.

That's my final order. Thank you for laying my obsessions to rest. I wanna play classicvanias before I play Metroidvanias so I don't lose my groove. Thanks guys.

SotN > Aria > Rondo > IV > Dawn > III > I > Circlet > Dissonance > Portrait > Order > II

Who's best Belmont, though?

Also, is Lament of Innocence good?
>>
>>386521930
Leon
And yes
>>
>>386521930
Best Belmont is either Simon, Christopher, or Julius.

Lament of Innocence is an okay game from what I've heard. Sort of like DMC 1.

This anon.
Also, the spot he teleports to is dependent on where you stand. You can get him in a good spot every time if you manipulate his teleport point by walking across the screen so you have enough room to jump over his fireballs and whip his head.

Man what a great summer for CV threads. Also I got Creeping Skull AND Peeping Eye souls on my new AoS playthrough fuck yes.

PoR really does have the best final boss in the series.

>not doing a skeleton only playthrough of both Aria and Dawn
Shame on you.
And shame on you again. It's Creaking Skull, not Creeping Skull.

Wish I knew about that when I played, those were hell on an emulator

I'm too tired to remember the guy's name, all I know is that his arm is now mine.

Also Lightning Doll is my bullet soulfu, Skeleton need not apply.
>>
>>386525776
You don't get it. It's not just the Skeleton soul you're restricted to, it's souls from any and all Skeleton type enemies.
