Nothing. Suckers are now PAYING to beta test, when that used to be a job you'd be earning money for. Meanwhile, those of us that wait for the game to release can get it later at cheap prices after the beta testing has been done (assuming that ever happens and the developers don't run away). Thanks, Valve!

Giving devs money for their work while it's in progress. For good and ethical people, it would mean that they receive funds that can be poured into the game's development. For game devs, it means they can just break promises, pull features, delay development indefinitely and release a broken and half-assed game by clicking the 'full release' button and calling it a day. What's there to lose? They've already been paid.

Too many 1 to 3 man projects from people who have never created a video game. They create a prototype that works well enough to get accepted. Then suddenly shit happens, someone quits, or they just get tired of working on it. Thus it ends up being abandoned or quickly patched to 1.0 so they can say it's finished.

Of course most the early access games /v/ hates, KF2, PUBG, Ark, etc., are examples of early access done right for the most part.
