After just playing a ROM hack of Vector (solo) in Sonic 1, I think you need to fuck off. They all have their own individual nuances that would make them distinct and fun to play through the game as, without being so drastically different that the levels don't need to be reworked, since they already take Tails and Knuckles' abilities into account.

I really like the Chaotix. I just wish someone would redo there sprites to fit in with the genesis games. Playing Sonic Classic Heros to play through as Choatix is fun, but there sprites do look jarring in the levels.

Has more details on what's changed, there's no real way to sum it up. But it's all mostly for the better, I think. I'd give it a go again if you want something to fill the void for Mania. I'd also recommend MD2 models if you don't have a toaster, but the vanilla 2D sprites look just fine. 3D models just make jumping on stuff a bit easier.

Is Time Over still a thing in Mania?
They seem to be going with a more exploration-based level design philosophy, as well as huge stages like 3&K had. I think they should just ditch Time Over. After just playing through 3&K again after many years I really question how they expected anyone to get through Carnival Night Act 2 or especially Sandopolis Act 2 in one go. There's just not enough time and plenty of things that will make you waste it.
They should at least adjust the time limit on an individual basis. In the classics it feels completely arbitrary since it's the same time limit for every stage so 99% of the time it's either a complete non-issue that there even is a time limit, or it makes it unnecessarily difficult to get through the stage in one life especially if you want to explore.

Sonic 1 and 2 look and run like shit on that though. May as well just download the 3D Classic versions if you want to play those on the 3DS.

Sonic the Hedgehog. What can be said about Sonic that hasn't been said already? For starters I suppose you could tackle the readily apparent and point out what an embarrassment he's been in recent years, but his newest venture Sonic Mania seeks to rectify those past muck-ups. Yes, Mania's entire purpose is to delve back into the core of what Sonic is and bring him back to his glory days. And what is Sonic at the core? A high-speed platformer, of course!...Or so I'm told. Allow me to be transparent here for a moment in saying that never have I ever been particularly fond of platformers, but I understand them intimately as anyone above the age of six would. Platformers are the fossils of the videogame industry and they operate on very simplistic yet tried-and-true concepts: if you push the joystick right the character goes right, to the left and they go left, and when you hit the jump button the character jumps. It's not so hard, yes? Well, for Sega's proud mascot these concepts seem insurmountably difficult. A jump is a jump sure, unless you're on any sort of incline whatsoever which will heavily skew your jump one way or the other or unless you have any one of the plethora of shield abilities, which will fling Sonic around the screen whichever way they please according to their own nonsensical design. Movement is quite the same, left is left and right is right unless you're facing an incline, or a loop, or god forbid the absolutely countless numbers of springs and stage gimmicks just waiting to send you a spike trap or a wantonly-placed enemy. Why is it that Sonic feels so heavy, and why is it that you seem to so rarel have any sort of actual control over him? Platformers should be a simple thing, but the relic that is Sonic the Hedgehog can't seem to get even the elementary fundamentals of game design correct. As it stands, Sonic Mania is a pretty little package of bells and whistles with none of the functionality of a good game.
