Often in games that look like this, cartoony platformers, even other Mario games, characters will often stand still in their idle animation until the time calls for them to animate themselves.

The only times you see this level of animation, when all characters onscreen are moving in their own unique way, is in mocapped video games, or often in Japanese titles where they tend to severely overanimate(e.g. Metal Gear Solid titles besides MGR).

I think that ever since he tried going for a LESS IS MORE approach for Sticker Star that backfired horribly since it actually stifles the spinoffs getting creative with their own original stuff adding to the experience (IE: SPM, which was till good even if different) and frankly, the guy is legendary enough that people are afraid to go against it now that it left his mouth even if he didn't even say it to them specifically.


Mario has a great main cast, but that doesn't mean you can use the same extras (Toads) for fucking EVERYTHING, and even though Rabbids is basically the same in this game the fact it is a "new" extra filling every role is slightly more "interesting".

I remember seeing Mario Sports Mix on Wii way back when it debuted and thought it looked fairly boring and not exciting enough compared to other sport spinoffs that came in that generation. Then it returned on the Wii U's eShop and I realized how much more fun it looked than the ones we get now. It actually had differently themed courts and a variety of hazards to watch out for that were simply expected in Mario sports games like this, but then you look at the ones released in this generation and it's just Mario characters on a basic court playing basic sports with maybe some minor gimmick thrown in.
